For the readers that want short and to the point:
Texas Skydiving is the most welcoming and comfortable DZ in central Texas. Do not hesitate to set up your first tandem or 1000th fun jump with them. You will be welcome with open arms.
For the detail-oriented, here's my long-winded experience:
I did my first skydive, a tandem jump, in late 2016 before I had found Texas Skydiving. I knew immediately that I wanted to do an AFF course and start jumping on my own. I spoke with a few drop zones to ask about AFF pricing and logistics. And then I spoke to Sarah at Texas Skydiving. Sarah was legitimately enthusiastic about a newcomer wanting to join the sport, a stark contrast to some of my other inquiries. Her genuine excitement and patience for my questions are 100% why I chose to do AFF with Texas Skydiving.
The drive out from central Austin is a brief 50 or so miles, and downright pleasant; very rural, nice scenery, well off of my beaten urban path. Texas Skydiving itself is located on a little slice of country heaven, with chickens, guinea fowl, llama and alpaca roaming about, and lots of shaded outdoor areas to camp, grill, relax, and pack your gear.
Once you step inside, expect a friendly greeting from Sarah or David, Cecily (if she's not with a student), and Nathan, who is likely making sure your canopy is packed so that you have a nice soft opening. Jeremy may be around too, if he's not already in the plane getting ready to take you up into the sky. Texas Skydiving is a small, tight-knit group, and these folks could not have been more welcoming when I showed up on day one.
Cecily and I spent the first day working through ground school to prepare me for my first jump. She is friendly, kind, and extremely knowledgeable. Expect to feel confident and well prepared after spending a day under her tutelage. Did I mention that the instruction was one on one? Hard to beat the personal attention to detail that comes with Texas Skydiving. Safety is their first priority, and you can be assured that they are looking out for yours.
Sarah and David both took a personal interest in my learning, progress, and safety every step (jump) of the way. Nathan even spent an hour with me after my first jump teaching me the ins and outs of packing, and many more since as I've progressed and had more and more questions. Gary, the gentleman that will turn your raw footage into a sick video montage of your jump if you so choose, is also around to share from his long history in the sport, and is always friendly and happy to help you feel at home. This is a sport in which the importance of learning from those with more experience cannot be overstated, and the Texas Skydiving crew gladly wants to give you every opportunity to do so.
I've since completed the instructor-assisted jump portion of AFF, and I still receive personal attention, kind words of encouragement, and any knowledge or information they can share when I ask. I could not have asked for a better group of people to throw me out of a plane, and I'm proud to call Texas Skydiving my home DZ.
Come on by, do a tandem jump with David or Dale, and afterwards when you realize that your calling is to fly all on your own, do the AFF course and let these guys and gals help you own the skies. Don't forget to get it on video though, time flies when you fly!
Blue skies,
