Located within the Hermann City Park in Houston, Texas, the Hermann Park Railroad provides a 20…read moreminute, 1.8 mile train ride around the park for the young and young at heart. We took the Houston Metro light rail to come to Hermann Park. So when we entered the park, and started to notice railroad tracks circling, I had an initial stupid thought that the park had a Metro stop INSIDE the park. But soon I realized the difference in width of the track. The standard width of a railroad track is 4 feet, 8.5 inches, while the tracks inside the park were 2 feet (narrow gauge). The cars could can fit 2 adults across. The gift shop at Kinder Station (the train's main stop) sells tickets starting at 10 am, so we waited around a bit. Tickets were $6 per passenger, and can be used for the entire day. We then got in line and were one of the first ones on, getting our paper ticket scanned by the conductor. I wanted to ride the last seats in the caboose, facing backwards to get the best views. The cars seem to be made for young children: there wasn't much legroom. By 10:15, the conductor yelled 'all aboard' and we were off. The train really zips along, making 3 additional stops (at 10:20, 10:23, and 10:30). At each stop, the conductor in the back of the train would get off and help anybody wanting to get off or (more importantly) get on. Towards the end of the ride, we went through a building (tunnel) that been decorated by local artists. We got back to our original place by 10:35 (thus a 20 minute ride). I'm not sure if you are allowed to stay on the train if you wanted a next ride, or had to get back in line. There were people waiting, but my wife overheard the conductor say that there was a mechanical problem and that the train wouldn't be able to depart right away. I did see that there are multiple trains available, so thinking that they could run concurrent ones if it got really busy.

But this time around I realize that 1) it is fun and see Hermann Park from a different view and 2) it's truly a transport station vehicle and not just a ride. In my mind I thought you just ride it around the park. I didn't realize that there are legit stops along the way for you to get off and go to the zoo, musuem, japanese gardens, and the playground. Mind blown no joke. It's an all day pass also! So get on and off as much as you want and need. During Christmas it's decked out in Christmas lights and the main station is also decorated. Super cute and the price is amazing for all day. I believe $7 but don't quote me on that You live here or visiting.....go check it out! Although I don't appreciate exiting through a gift shop. Y'all know what y'all are doing with those that have kids. It's a trap! But a fun trap!

I've run this half marathon just about every year since I moved to Houston, and it's a great race…read more The race occurs every year on the Sunday before Halloween and provides a great warm up option for the Chevron/Aramaco race that occurs in mid-January, known to be the largest sporting event in Houston. The course is pretty flat, making a short loop around downtown before heading out along Allen Parkway and through Memorial Park and back, with only the few rolling hills near Buffalo Bayou park to slow you down. Half marathon runners get the chance to pass through the new Memorial Park tunnels which is a lot of fun. The race also offers a 10K option but these runners turn around at the end of Allen Parkway, missing Memorial Park and the tunnels. This race is also nice as the price is fairly low and includes free race day photos. Score! Having done the race several times, I will say that personally, I feel like I like it a little less since UTHealth has taken over as sponsor. The packet pickup now occurs at their Bellaire clinic and promotes a number of their health screening services. Don't get me wrong, I am all about preventive screening and public health, however I really enjoy packet pick ups as an avenue to check out running vendors to score some fun apparel and accessories. This is no longer offered with UTHealth. It feels very much like an advertising event for their health services. This year too their race day website went down for several hours the night before the race, when everyone wants to review the participant guide. They also promote live tracking, which I signed up to receive notification alerts at significant milestones, however there were no time clocks displayed on the course itself. Most runners have a sports watch or tracking app, however this was a little disappointing. Overall, I'm definitely going to continue to run this race but am a little disappointed with the new race sponsor.

There are food vendors, so that's covered, but I can't quite figure out what's missing to make it a better event. A band perhaps? Professional performances of some time to give it an extra umph? I don't know. Keep in mind that parking will suck so come early if you want free street parking and prepare to walk, a lot. Bring lots of water and put on sunscreen too!

The…read moretypes of kites extends far beyond the basic red or blue style we had as kids; some were fashioned like planes, fruits, and other more artistic objects than the basic popsicle stick/bedsheet contraption of ye olden days. Many got stuck in trees - some enterprising individuals hurled water bottles and other nearby would-be-projectiles at the trees to try to dislodge the kites. I am fairly certain alcohol was involved in a big way for a lot of attendees, or some of you obviously never left the bench in a baseball game because you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn and imperiled everyone trying to walk or run on the trail near the trees. Of course there was no security or other adult figure nearby to try and get everyone to settle down. For the most part there were too many unsupervised children running around everywhere all hyped on sugar, which really spooked my dog that I was trying to casually take for a pleasant stroll through the park on a Sunday as we are apt to do. I am not sure if their parents were drunk and didn't care, or just didn't care that their children were running up to people's dogs with a devil-may-care attitude. My lil man isn't an aggressive breed but like a normal dog, does not like rando strangers running at his face with outstretched hands at top speed. For future iterations of this event I would avoid the park with your furry child on kite day. If you have a human child pay closer attention to them and give them less sugar on the day of the event.

Because I tried to get tickets online last week on the day of the event (in case the weather would be bad) and was denied. The tickets clearly say "Rain or Shine" and non-refundable. This means one of two things: Even if it rains, the event goes on, and if someone decides not to come, they are non-refundable. Both things have to be true. All day today they were announcing on their facebook page that they were open so I drove all the way there after waiting for the weather to be a little better and guess what? They were closed. The best they offer is to bring the ticket tomorrow. Well, I am not free tomorrow and in fact won't be in town. So thanks for nothing. You guys just took money and will not give anything in return. *edit*, I now saw that on their facebook page they are saying "We did not close due to the rain but because of severe weather". The point is they closed so at the very least they should offer refunds to those who couldn't get in and then offer free entry for those who were already there and got kicked out after the rain.

My daughter and I have been dealing with an issue at the GlyderWorld establishment in downtown Houston all day and night September 3rd. Glyder World held my daughters license without cause. She rented from them yesterday to ride in the streets of Houston. She was with 2 other college students and they were celebrating her birthday. They were robbed by a homeless man and he took one of the scooters to get away. A security guard chased him.   Distraught, they walked back to the Glyderworld location only to be met by non-caring or concerned bunch of employees. The scooter that was taken was not my daughter's scooter. She brought her scooter back but since the robbery occurred without them having ID on them, when they went to Glyder world to return her scooter and let them know of the robbery Glyderworld did not help them. Instead the GlyderWorld manager told my daughter they were not going to return her license even though she returned her scooter and needed her license to return home to Virginia. My daughter turned in the scooter from her contract but her friends scooter was stolen during the robbery, so Glyderworld kept my daughter's license that was not part of her friend's contract . The friend paid an extra (no ID) fee contract to rent her scooter. I am upset that GlyderWorld did not help them or provide aid to the girls. They left them to fend for themselves, knowing they were robbed. We were out of town and flew in to deal with this. We ended up getting the police to step in and file a police report and GlyderWorld still has not returned my daughter's license and her scooter was returned. Glyder world is an endangerment to the lives of City of Houston Residents using the streets and sidewalks. The patron is operating a motorized vehicle in the city of Houston at night without a license and if anything happens to those patrons (mostly young people) or the people on the street they have no identification to identify themselves.  The fact that there was a robbery and this establishment kept her license when she was not the one that got her scooter robbed yesterday, however was among the group that endured the robbery is egregious.  This story must be told to the public. My daughter is a college student who was here for the weekend celebrating her birthday when the incident occurred. She has no license to get on the plane to return to college in Virginia after the holiday. This could have been worse and can happen to many of our young people and I want to make it public since this could have been a lot worse. Houston wants to be a top tourist city but we need to make our businesses step their practices up to manage like a city with tourists traffic. We are thankful that all the girls are alive and well. We support our Houston small businesses but this is one business that is endangering our young people's lives daily.
