I thought it was going to be a pretty small race, but there were a lot more runners than I expected. The race starts near Fish Plaza and you basically run down Memorial Drive and back. You run one loop for the 5K and two for the 10K. Not the most fun route, but it seems to be a common race route for a lot of smaller Houston races for road closure logistics, etc. There is just a slight bit of incline running over the bridge, but it's a flat course otherwise (as is expected in Houston). Post-race party runs true to the name -- plenty to chocolate to go around! It was my first time actually seeing a chocolate fountain in person, and I will shamelessly admit that I was pretty giddy about it ;).

The crawfish festival was fun. There was a ton of people and quite a few dogs…read more They had music and school kids performing. Also a lot of vendors giving away marketing stuff. Everyone like free stress balls, pens, bags and more. I did not eat the crawfish. I know you are probably saying "why did you go then," well anything not to stay home and do chores that's why. Also because I knew my husband would like it. And he did. You got about 3 pounds for $20. (1 ticket =$5) The ticket lines were slow and they should have had more of them. Also spread them out some so the crowd of people are not all in one area. A lot of people were asking where do you buy the drinks. Me as well. They were across the "street" from the crawfish and other foods. Next year maybe they will have other desserts besides Dippin dots and Rita's custard. Cookies, cakes etc... would be great. I love a great cookie. Over all we had a nice time and will probably go again next year.

But it's ok because you can park on the street for free. The ticket booth is close to the entrance, including 4 lines. All the food are payed by the tickets. One plate of crawfish is 4 tickets(1 ticket =$5). We bought 4 tickets and got our crawfish plate with two delicious potatoes and one sweet corn. They set up enough tents and the signs were big and clear. The eating areas were big enough so it's very easy to find an empty table and chairs. The crawfishes were awesome! They were very fresh and tasty, and most of them were big ones! The huge plate was good for two people. But I thought they might be a little bit salty. I had to balance the salty with potatoes and corn. They were very delicious anyway. The live shows and vender shows were interesting. People here were very friendly and warm. After crawfish, we went to vender tents, played some games and won lots of gifts, including sport back bags, cups, coozies, stress balls and a national guard cap! I really liked this event. It's great for family and friends to enjoy the weekend. Oh, they also have a kids' zone.

Whether you're running, or volunteering it's for a great cause. It's quite a sight to see so many people as one, working towards a common goal (the finish line). As a runner, you not only get to traverse your favorite city in the great nation of Texas by foot, but you also get a chance to wait in line for port-a-potties spread throughout the course. The most common situation being the need to pee as soon as the race starts. The further out you can run at the beginning, the shorter the lines. After running there's a tent city waiting to welcome you with free foods, drinks and the best offers that expensive services and companies will give you. For those who start off in warm up clothing, and shed it as the race goes on, all clothing gets donated. So that's pretty cool. As a volunteer, you get a front row seat in a number of different areas, providing various services to runners and the community. Watching for traffic, cleaning up litter and clothing, offering runners water and other items, or other services provided by the race staff. Volunteers get shirts, and swag, as well as a jacket (which I didn't get because it was never delivered in my size. AHEM....a wee bit butt-hurt still. Our group BON Running Club, had a volunteer after party at Little Woodrow's. We're pretty awesome. For Health, Charity, personal goals, or because you're bored, the marathon is something you have to be in, to understand and enjoy. Yes, the idea of running in a giant circle when you life isn't in jeopardy seems a little much to some. However, it's good practice for when the inevitable zombie apocalypse begins, or our alien overlords arrive to establish dominance. Just do it the once so you know you can. Then you know you don't have to fear zombies with 5 mph speed limit.

I feel so lucky I got in as part of a team and I would recommend this race without hesitation to anybody. I ran the half this year (Jan 2013) and to say that the weather at the start was not optimal is an understatement. Rainy, windy and cold, I was thinking this race would be craptacular beyond compare. I was wrong...even with the weather this was one of the most fun half marathons I've ever run (and this was # 32 for me). Highlights: Communication from the race was consistently relevant, timely and informative. I never felt spammed. The Expo was great and bib/shirt pickup was a breeze. The start was one of the best...scratch that, I'm kicking it up a notch, the start was the best organized of any race I've ever run, and that includes races in NYC, Miami, Pittsburgh, Chicago and San Diego. The way they fed people into the correct corral was excellent. The volunteers were AMAZE-BALLS! So well organized, spaced well, helpful, friendly and supportive, I can't say enough. The spectators were EXCEPTIONAL! My friends from Houston were afraid there wouldn't be that many people out because who wants to stand in a cold rain, with wind, for hours. Well apparently tens of thousands of Houstonians do because all along the course there was terrific support. Running through the Heights was very fun. The crowd really helped keep the mood upbeat and spirits high. I felt like a superstar running through the puddles and the supporters are the reason why. Thank you so much, Houston. The after race was well organized and efficient. I just wish the weather had been nicer so there could have been a celebration on Discovery Green, but that's not the race's fault. I'm used to lottery systems because a lot of the races in NYC have them...that's the price you pay for having a popular race. I hope I'm lucky enough to get in next year. Houston Marathon organizers, you do a great job. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you in 2014!

I was so excited when I first heard about the First Saturday Arts Market. It happens once a month…read moreon the First Saturday of that month. It's a year round event and it shifts from morning time in the winter months and to the evening in the summer months. Most of the businesses along 19th street open up late and it's a big festival of sorts. There are artists from physical art to musical art performing. Lots of little booths and tables to display their craft. Overall, it brings this whole area to life and is worth visiting at least once. Gives you something different to do on a date.

My daughter and I have been dealing with an issue at the GlyderWorld establishment in downtown Houston all day and night September 3rd. Glyder World held my daughters license without cause. She rented from them yesterday to ride in the streets of Houston. She was with 2 other college students and they were celebrating her birthday. They were robbed by a homeless man and he took one of the scooters to get away. A security guard chased him.   Distraught, they walked back to the Glyderworld location only to be met by non-caring or concerned bunch of employees. The scooter that was taken was not my daughter's scooter. She brought her scooter back but since the robbery occurred without them having ID on them, when they went to Glyder world to return her scooter and let them know of the robbery Glyderworld did not help them. Instead the GlyderWorld manager told my daughter they were not going to return her license even though she returned her scooter and needed her license to return home to Virginia. My daughter turned in the scooter from her contract but her friends scooter was stolen during the robbery, so Glyderworld kept my daughter's license that was not part of her friend's contract . The friend paid an extra (no ID) fee contract to rent her scooter. I am upset that GlyderWorld did not help them or provide aid to the girls. They left them to fend for themselves, knowing they were robbed. We were out of town and flew in to deal with this. We ended up getting the police to step in and file a police report and GlyderWorld still has not returned my daughter's license and her scooter was returned. Glyder world is an endangerment to the lives of City of Houston Residents using the streets and sidewalks. The patron is operating a motorized vehicle in the city of Houston at night without a license and if anything happens to those patrons (mostly young people) or the people on the street they have no identification to identify themselves.  The fact that there was a robbery and this establishment kept her license when she was not the one that got her scooter robbed yesterday, however was among the group that endured the robbery is egregious.  This story must be told to the public. My daughter is a college student who was here for the weekend celebrating her birthday when the incident occurred. She has no license to get on the plane to return to college in Virginia after the holiday. This could have been worse and can happen to many of our young people and I want to make it public since this could have been a lot worse. Houston wants to be a top tourist city but we need to make our businesses step their practices up to manage like a city with tourists traffic. We are thankful that all the girls are alive and well. We support our Houston small businesses but this is one business that is endangering our young people's lives daily.

Most of the runs…read morein town are 5Ks, ~3.1 miles, and then you have your 10Ks which are ~6.2 miles, but somtimes you want something in between. Well now you have the 4 the park run which is 4 miles. The course is very well designed and the after part is even better! There was so much food and drinks! One of my favorite runs and all for a great cause.

Parking was not an issue; I mean who doesn't want parking right near the finish line. At first we thought man should have parked at the starting line, but as hindsight goes, we had prime parking in the end. The after party was, well let's put it this way, I've never been so pampered after a race. The vendors were friendly and very generous in all aspects. Frozen Strawberry Margaritas, Bloody Mary's, Mimosas, Beer, Muscle Milk, Squeezed - fruit infused water/juices, Breakfast burritos, pasta, crepes, cliff bars, sausage/chili, massages, stretching, shoes, and swag up the wazoo. Cannot thank the vendors enough & YELP for giving me such a great opportunity to enjoy/explore the community I now call home!

Ok so let me start by saying this was my first and only time here while volunteering for work. I…read morewas also only there for about two hours. I am giving a 5 star rating because of how well everything was ran by such few people. Schools let out and the kids who signed up to come here (only $10 per entire school year!!!!) to do homework, play, or socialize. They seemed happy to come in, the ages ranged from elementary school to middle school while I was there. There was a gaming area, study area, a gym, and this science room that had drones, 3d printers, and other cool things. The kids were clearly familiar with the staff and seemed to enjoy themselves. While there I socialized with any kids that wanted to, played video games/ping pong, and participated in the gym competition. I honestly had a great time and it's great seeing how quickly kids open up and often just want someone to talk to. I'll be looking into more volunteering opportunities.
