The way they schedule your fence project is their scheduling team will reach out to you when it's a few days from them having an opening. Now, this could be a week or could be two weeks as it just depends on how busy they are. However, Kyle Herling was the project manager I worked with and he was very responsive to my emails which helped a lot. Communication is key to making your customers feel satisfied! The guys on site doing the work were also very kind, shoutout Tony! Had an old fence removed and replaced, and I am extremely satisfied with the work. Kyle Jamieson was great to work with on quote and scope of the project. Jesus and his crew were Top Notch in quality of work and ability make things happen. Value is there with skill, quality and performance. It was a hard choice with one other contractor in the running, but made the right choice in going with Texas Backyard Living. The kicker in deciding was simple, they came out first to meet up and do a walk with me so I could explain exactly what I wanted. You think of things on the fly when you are actually on site with whomever is going to quote you. Otherwise its dozens of emails and time wasted going back and forth. Face to Face is where the deal is done, not emails. The other fence contractors worked blind with Google maps. One even just worked with email and not even a phone call. Three years ago, we used this company to power wash and stain our wood fence. They did good work for us. We thought we would use them again when our HOA notified us that it was time to have our fence stained again. We called their office and a courteous lady took our information to get a bid from a representative. We experienced several delays from their representative. We notified the company of the delays. After 3 weeks of delays, no work, and no date set to do the work, we called the company and told them we were moving on to a different and better company. After firing TBL,we received several calls from TBL's job representative- sorry, too little-too late, we did not respond to the phone calls. We did find another company to do our fence work- promptly and to our satisfaction. A few days ago, I received ANOTHER message from the TBL job representative stating that he was no longer with them plus a Docusign form. Seriously, what do you not understand about- your services are no longer needed???? Needless to say, I cannot recommend Texas Backyard Living. read more

On May 28, 2024 a windstorm laid my back fence over at 10-15 degree angle. I called Texas Best Stain (now named Texas Backyard Living), who came over June 17, 2024 to give me a quote, which I approved June 29th, 2024. Shortly after that Texas Best returned and charged me $750.00 to set 5 poles up to make the fence STRAIGHT. On March 4th, 2025 another storm came through and pushed those same poles back to the same angle. I called Texas Best Stain (now named Texas Backyard Living) and they came out and told me that the problem was that the poles (which they supposedly fixed in 2024) were not set deep enough, and that the best way to rectify the problem was to replace the whole fence for $11,000. I am 74 years old and money can get tight, so I called to talk to someone to try to find a financially less painful way to solve this, but never heard back from them. I am sure these are wonderful people, but this has been a really crappy experience, and I would not use or recommend them. read more

Texas Backyard Living is great. I would highly recommend TBL to anyone looking to improve their outdoor space. The prices are good, especially considering the quality. What really stood out to me was their communication. I worked with John as the project manager, and he was exhaustive in his detail and prompt with his replies. Each of the crews were very professional and were happy to answer my questions. I didn't catch all of their names, but Chilo and Marcos were both great. The workspace was kept as clean as a construction area can be during the process, and was cleaned up further after they were done. In the summer of 2024 we decided to pull the trigger on a new project, which was a patio extension with an outdoor kitchen and patio cover. We had wanted to do this for a long time, and had some detailed plans on exactly what we wanted. After getting quotes from a few contractors, we decided to go with TBL. We had some difficulties getting the project approved with our HOA, but construction finally started mid October. TBL gave us advice on how to work with our HOA through that process. Once it got started, things proceeded promptly and mostly stayed within the original schedule they had outlined for us. The only cause for delay was a lot of rain. Everything was complete before Thanksgiving except for some minor trim. After the main construction phase, there were a few small issues, and they scheduled and fixed them promptly. read more

Had our patio cover built earlier this year and after surviving the end of winter and all of summer I can now say it was a fantastic investment. Owner Rocky, Project Manager Rhett, and Foreman Chilo were all top notch to work with and did everything they said they would do. Even when our city and the HOA decided they needed engineering drawings due to the height of the structure, Rocky and Rhett were able to help out immensely. They did extremely poor job on my Pergola. First when they were building it it was shaking vigorously which I asked them to fix. Then when installing polygal (polycarbonate) sheets on the pergola, screws are generally the preferred fastening method but they used nails instead which caused it to fall apart with winds. When I explained them the situation and asked them to check for manufacturing warranty they outright denied any responsibility for poor workmanship. I would not recommend them to anyone for any backyard work. read more

Had a great experience when we needed to replace a fence in back. we did have to wait a little bit to get someone out for a quote, however once they came out they were super professional, told us about some deals and helped us pick out what was best for my neighbor and I for a shared fence. They did our fence many many years ago so I don't know if they have a new staff or they've grown too big to manage themselves but we tried to book with them to do our pergola and they cant keep their appointments. I called when our sales guy hadn't shown up at our appointment time. I spoke with a scheduler who was condescending and rude about how they manage their appointment "windows" which was never explained to us when we booked the appointment, which doesnt work with our work schedule. When we booked the appointment we even communicated with the scheduler that we had work constraints and we were given a specific time that would work for us. In the end. we cancelled and will take our business elsewhere. It's a good indication of how they handle work if they cant even keep a basic quote appointment or even communicate at the time of making the appointment that they show up when they want to. I would be worried about workers showing up as well or how they handle any issues once work is done. No thanks! read more

Horrible Experience Do Not recommend. they did my neighbors yard and did not tell us they would be on our property, worked on our side not the neighbors. Nothing on our side was flagged , they cut into our internet cable , I lost a day of work then went out next day and my gate was broken. The neighbors property manager was nice enough to call them about the gate and they sent out someone to look at the gate who was very rude and said it was not their fault, I called and talked to the VP she refused to take responsibility and refused to repair it. The gate was in perfectly good working order till they dismantled it to put up the neighbors fence but refuse to repair it . a lack of integrity to say the least. read more

I chose this company based on ratings but the experience was less than expected. I had met on a couple of occasions with the sales manager Kris Williamson. He had given us a quote within 2 weeks. However, he didn't return several calls. He finally said he would set up an appointment for him and his foreman to come and discuss the final details. His communication and follow up is sub par as we have been sitting here for 6 weeks still not sure when or if the meeting with the foreman will happen or if my fence will be built. I had initially quoted a project that was a little higher, but changed my mind and put 1/2 of my patio/pergola savings into a large landscape project. i still used TBL for my stamped concrete patio. There were a TON of obstacles we had to deal with, and i completely understand how a concrete project would get derailed because of it. The patio is gorgeous and I absolutely love it. I'm only giving 3 stars because of the customer service was horrible. - horrible communication - was always late, HOURS late. - any communication that DID occur was through text only. Some of my questions went unanswered for 5 days i know my job wasn't huge, but it was very important to me, I paid in full, so they didn't have to wait for one cent from me. I get it, I'm in sales... but if I ever treated my clients like that, I'd be losing business. read more

We solicited for quotes to 3 other companies. all reputable , established contractors. Only one other besides Texas Backyard Living showed any real interest. Nice to be busy! We contracted with TBL in February 2022 for a complete fence replacement (300 feet and 4 gates) , screened -in back porch and stamped concrete covered patio , outdoor kitchen and separate stamped and covered hot tub area. A big job with lots of moving parts. Project manager Ali was great from start to finish , always on time ( or communicated if any delay) and on site every day to lay-out crew. TBL worked with City and HOA for all required permits and once work commenced it proceeded with only a few hiccups. To be fair , the only reason I did not give 5 stars to TBL was the electrical work was not performed as I asked. This was due to the electrical sub-contractor not not properly supervising his crew. TBL did force electrician to redo the work ( which was extensive) at no additional charge and to our satisfaction . I would and have recommended TBL to neighbors. Steve R read more

Filled out the free estimate online and got a callback the next morning. We scheduled an appointment for 4/14 from 10-11 am. Sat around until about 11:20 before calling them to see what was going on. Was told the appointment was scheduled for 4/28 and not 4/14. The person who originally scheduled it specifically said Wednesday 4/14 which was great for me because I was off work that day. I am working on 4/28 and did not schedule anything for that day. I would never trust a company to complete a large backyard patio project that cant even schedule appointments properly. read more

This is a follow-up review to the 1 star review that my wife posted back on 7/3/20. For anyone who prefers to just get a summary of Texas Backyard Living without having to read this entire review, here are a few words that I would use to describe them; Dishonest. Incompetent. Condescending. Argumentative. Disorganized. Rude. Unresponsive. Unethical. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY. I was hoping to be able to update things and write about how Texas Backyard Living went out of their way to fix everything and provide top notch customer service, but that isn't the case unfortunately. The lack of professionalism only got worse after the disastrous start with this poorly run fence company. As my wife stated in her review, the City of Dallas Code Compliance shut down work on our fence on 7/1/20 because Texas Backyard Living neglected to pull a fence permit before starting work. We were assured by Ruth Montgomery (Project Manager) that the fence permit application would be submitted immediately. That was a lie. Ruth didn't actually submit the online application until 7/6/20, almost a full week after work was stopped. There was never an explanation for this. We had to continually call Josh Murray (Sales Rep) and Ruth to try and get updates on the fence permit status. The code compliance inspector and permit office personnel had informed us that the fence permits usually get approved very quickly, yet we continued to get strung along by Texas Backyard Living. Josh even said that he was physically driving over to the permit office to check the status almost daily. That was a lie. The project delays went on week after week. The owner of the company, Rocky Cloninger, returned from vacation sometime around July 17th and he emailed me on the 20th with two specific points that he wanted to make. Number one, he wanted to let me know that our fence project was their "#1 priority". That was a lie. Number two, he wanted to defend their decision not to pull a permit. This was a surprise to me. I expected the owner of the company to offer his sincerest apologies for the permit fiasco, and to assure me that there would be no more mistakes. Instead, Rocky felt it was important for me to know that his company typically does not pull fence permits from the City of Dallas. In his words from his email "It's really not a big deal nor is it illegal. The city of Dallas doesn't even do an inspection on the work!!" Actually, it was a big deal. The city sent us a code violation notice that informed us that we could be fined for the infraction. And there is in fact a follow-up inspection that the city does after the fence is complete. Anyway, after continual delays and excuses we got tired of waiting for Texas Backyard Living to get the approved fence permit. We reached out on 7/22/20 to the permit office, and one of the assistants to our district councilman, and found out some surprising news. The city had been waiting on Texas Backyard Living to submit required documentation for the fence permit since 7/6/20. That's right. Ruth, Josh and Rocky had been lying to us the whole time by saying that they were waiting on the city while it was actually the other way around. There was never an explanation for this. The rest of this story involves me holding their hand through the simplest online building permit that the city requires. I had to make sure Texas Backyard Living submitted the correct documentation. Then I had to actually walk Ruth through the fence permit payment process over the phone. Which was $125. Not the $300 that Ruth quoted us. Then I had to continually reach out to the city to find out when the permit was approved, which actually only took 3 business days. Then I had to push Texas Backyard Living to get us back on the schedule so that we could finally finish the project. So to sum up, a project that got halted on 7/1/20 didn't get started back up until 7/29/20 when it should have only taken Texas Backyard Living a few business days to get an approved permit and finish the job. They were so unprofessional and disorganized that they actually didn't complete the final punch list items until 8/8/20. Even then we, the homeowners, had to reach out to the city to schedule the final inspection which was completed by an inspector from the sustainable development department on 8/13/20. The permit office told us that the contractor would set up the inspection, but we knew that Texas Backyard Living couldn't handle something that simple, so we set it up ourselves and brought this project to a close once and for all. Rocky Cloninger and Ruth Montgomery are dishonest and inept individuals. We strongly recommend that you avoid this company at all costs and use one of the many other fence contractors in the metroplex. read more

My experience with a Texas Backyard Living was excellent. I had them replace fencing on my personal house and install new fencing on my rental house. One house had board on board and the other cedar 6" side by side as well as iron. All of the fences look great! The crew was very thorough and professional. The sales person Kyle stayed involved and helped implement some changes I needed to make after the jobs were started. Kyle was very helpful and reasonable in the changes quoted. We hired Texas Backyard Living to replace part of our backyard fence. It is a big, expensive job, over 200 feet of fence. When the owner made his sales pitch to us he told us that Texas Backyard Living is BBB Certified, that they are on the Good Contractors List, and that they've been in the fence business for over 10 years in North Texas.  He told us this in response to us asking about references and reviews for the company.  He related that they basically have impeccable credentials, and that if we were to go with them "everything would go smoothly".  That has not been the case.  The owner said specifically that Texas Backyard Living would take care of all "call before you dig" Texas811 and that any necessary permits from the city would be pulled.  Code concerns came up during this sales pitch when we specifically talked about the distance of the current gate versus the distance of the new gate in relation to the alleyway.  He assured us that if they needed to move the gate in further away from the alleyway edge and towards our home that they would, and all local codes would be followed.  So we hired them. Three days into the project, our doorbell rings, and it's a city inspector asking to see the permit for this project. We call Texas Backyard Living and find out they never pulled the permit. Our project immediately comes to a halt. No explanation is given to us as to why this step was skipped. Now we're worried that perhaps no City of Dallas building codes were followed at all. The fact that Texas Backyard Living did not apply for, submit plans and get approval for a permit from the City of Dallas prior to the start of construction worries us about the company's business ethics.  If this was simply a miss, a mistake, or somebody forgetting to do something then we can understand that.  However, if Texas Backyard Living intentionally did not pull a permit prior to the start of construction then that is tantamount to illegal activity by actively attempting to defraud the City of Dallas.  To be clear......we're not accusing Texas Backyard Living of intentionally working without a permit. What I'm saying is that this all looks very bad from any perspective, and does not speak well to the professionalism of the management staff at Texas Backyard Living. Neither does the lack of communication regarding this matter since everything came to a halt. We did get some communication however. That was to inform us we would now owe an additional $300 (on top of the tens of thousands we're already paying) for them to get the permit. No apology, no explanation. Just a terse email saying they're going to charge us $300 extra. Our project has been delayed due to this company's negligence. Additionally, our neighbor is upset with us due to their workers' negligence in destroying part of the neighbor's fence.  It took 4 days for this to be repaired. The neighbor's dog got loose. What if it had attacked somebody? And finally, we....as Texas Backyard Living's customers....are upset with the way that this has unfolded.  Pulling a permit is not a homeowner requirement.  The contractor, Texas Backyard Living, is responsible for pulling the permit as the working party.  This is actually a very basic requirement at most state levels.  There is no excuse for this not having been done.  It's sloppy at best and illegal at worst. Finally, we are very unhappy with the lack of communication from Texas Backyard Living. They have been slow to respond to our phone calls and emails, and they have never proactively reached out to us with any updates or information since the problems started. So, if you're lucky enough to not have a single hiccup in your project, you may have a good experience with these guys. But in our experience, at the first little bump in the road, we simply became an annoyance to them and they are obviously avoiding "dealing with" the situation and communicating with us. read more

We had Texas Backyard Living construct a side fence in our backyard which was about 50 feet long and mostly 6 feet tall but also 7 feet and 8 feet in sections. Before selecting Texas Backyard to construct the fence we also got some quotes from other companies and Texas' quote was competitive. So as far as the work and the experience, I was very pleased. I was happy with the service provided by Kyle who came out to take the fence measurements and provide the quote and answer questions. I was also happy with Tony and his crew that did the work. When Tony showed up we talked about the job for a few minutes and I discussed some of my preferences/requests. He listened carefully and did not rush me or pressure me. Once we covered that, Tony and his crew got to work and pretty much worked straight for the next 6 hours on a hot day to complete the job. When it was done, we reviewed it together and Tony made sure the yard was clean of debris as well. So, all in all, I was really happy with Texas Backyard Living and the work they did and would use them again in the future and feel comfortable recommending them to a friend. read more

I have used people in the past and have found nails and wood in my backyard. They go through your whole backyard with a metal detector to make sure there are no nails, very important if you have kids or dogs. I highly recommend them!!!! read more

Updating my original review of 4 stars - after installation and my payment their service was non-existent. I have had nothing but trouble with the motorized gate and can't get anyone to come and service it. We were physically stuck inside the backyard because the gate would not open and was told that they were not able to come out for at least a week. The $10,000 I paid for the gate and fence I would hope they would at least be customer oriented for the first year or at least the first 6 months. Very disappointed in the company. read more

TBL was great to work with and exceeded our expectations. We had a backyard patio and roof built along with electrical and a bar. Kimbra was our sales rep and she was always available to answer questions along the way and coordinated communication with the various crews that came out. Don't anyone ever use Texas Backyard Living fence, gate and stain company. Sent an email the morning they decided to come and then showed up. That is not an appointment. They did a SLOPPY job. Cut the cable. Which means they did not call to find out where the lines were like they are supposed to do. I was working from home and it cost me 2 days. They came back to fix what should have been done right and showed up unannounced again. Did not fix everything. Left a lot of chunks of old concrete from the old gate in the backyard. Poured leftover wet concrete in the backyard and now we have to break it up. Who does that? I docked the balance the 2 days I could not work and they want the money. They got paid way too much as it is. I would actually like a refund. They can come and take the gate back. All of this and not one worked from the lady that sent the email or the owner. Bad business. Beware! Do not use them. read more
