Welcome to Highgate, Popeseye. What a great addition to Highgate/Archway food scene you are…read more As Archway locals we in our household are lucky to have myriad of eateries to choose from at all hours of the day and night, so the fact that we have ventured to Popeseye twice in a month after we found out about its relatively new opening should speak volumes in itself. It is just a perfect addition to the neighbourhood - right on the main road, easily accessible from the tube but quiet, and unlike many quick grab and go eateries in the area, genuinely a lovely place to sit down, even if it should be for a full nice evening or say, a date. All that for nonprohibitive prices for a steakhouse, and we have a winner. Atmosphere is really lovely and cozy: what really serves this space right is that it is partitioned into two parts - so even if it is full, you retain quite an intimate atmosphere (that being said, on Tuesday's jazz and steak nights, when all the visitors tend to gather in the back area around the band, don't be discouraged by the seemingly empty front part which you get to see from the front windows are you are walking by!). But let's be real, atmosphere and location is nice, but steakhouses are about meat, meat, meat! Popeseye has not dissapointed me on this front. The five weeks hung grass-fed beef steaks are very flavoursome and juicy. The cuts are generous and the steaks are finished just right. So far I've tried a sirloin and their 'Jazz and Steak Tuesdays' special of 6oz rump and they were both exactly as should be. All steaks come with a generous side of fries and a big selection of sauces for the table (standard and dijon mustard, hollandaise, ketchup, horseradish, etc.). The Tuesday special for £15 includes the 6oz steak, fries, sauces, and one small glass of wine - definitely a good deal. (NB for the jazz lovers - from what I've seen, the musicians have been quite liberal with their interpretation of jazz, but hey - this is not a jazz bar and they were still good musicians and on tune, so I don't see a reason to put my judgmental hat on). Everyone was too full to sample the extensive whiskey and desert menu, but look - if you are smart and unlike us, don't order the phenomenally cheesy, home meals memories inducing mac and cheesy for the table, maybe you can give that a shot :). Both times service was knowledgeable about their meat, pleasant and efficient. I left as a happy meateater and I will be back.

The interior is newly refurbished and it makes no effort to simulate period charm -- it is unpretentious, clean and modern. The back bar (go through the gents) has darts and another fireplace. Nine handpumps, three in front and six in back, and a good selection of whiskies as well. The service was notably amiable and efficient. I did not eat here and cannot comment on the food, but I surely would have been content to sit in the bar all afternoon if I could have.

The pub itself is split into two, with the front section being more of a saloon bar, and the back more of a comfy space ideal to relax for an evening or a weekend afternoon, with both served by the same staff from one room to another. A firm favourite, and sure to be a hit if you're in the area with friends, meeting up with others, or just fancy a quiet pint.

It's strange as the decor is family friendly and and low key. I mean yes there are monkeys everywhere, you'd expect that, but they're on shelves around the room, the theming is unobtrusive. We only wanted drinks originally so weren't allowed into the main part of the restaurant but just remained on the sofas by the bar. This was no bad thing. The sofas were huge leather concoctions, and so comfy. I could have easily fallen asleep had the company i kept not been such fun. They are obviously doing something right because as the evening progressed the restaurant became rammed with an ever growing queue waiting for tables. It was good to be slightly removed from this chaos. Being the piggy i am, i obviously got the urge for food and the staff kindly agreed to serve us snacks at the sofas. Before i come to the food, let's revisit the staff. Good on the eye, any awareness of customer service i would say was absent. Not actively rude, just lacking any impulse to help customers. When we asked for the bill, for drinks, for food, they generally looked us at slightly confused and then after talking amongst themselves for 5 minutes came over to see what we needed. So, to the food. My mate ordered Fabulous olives. Not fabulous. At all. I ordered nachos with chorizo. The nachos came with the cheese having been missed off. A cardinal sin in my book; what is any meal without cheese? The chorizo was very tasty though. I wasn't blown away by Monkey Nuts, but i think i could be tempted back to try more of the food if there was a quieter opportunity where you weren't on show and you might receive adequate service. If someone asks me again what i thought of Monkey Nuts i probably wont waste words; i'll just shrug my shoulders and move on. SECRET TIP: I had a French Martini cocktail. It was amazing. I don't often drink, but i'd be more than happy to break this rule time and time again for this rather sexy pink number. The tiny monkey cocktail-glass charm was a nice touch too.

We ordered the calamari, when it came it looked amazing but tasted on point and delish. I've had calamari in different restaurants I would say this is one of my top places to get it. Anyways, we ordered the Grilled salmon, the Seabass fillet and Cordon Bleu breaded chicken. Dessert was a chocolate fondant with vanilla icecream. Everything was scrumptious. I would say friendly service, big portions (wasn't expecting it), lovely surroundings. Hygiene wise, clean.

I was visiting a friend and came here twice for both food and drinks. On my initial visit I took advantage of one of the lunch specials (chicken, quinoa and beets) and Egyptian soup. Both were warm and satisfying. On my second visit I came back for the same soup, although it tasted slightly different. Not bad different, just obvious that the food may not be very consistent. The only real critique would be the length of time it took to receive my food (a bit longer than usual for soup that should be already made). I fully enjoyed this place and would visit again.
