We came by about an hour before closing and there was a pretty long list of names before us, but we were down to wait. We waited about 30 min and they were kindly still letting people in even though it was close to closing. Seating is a bit tight but it's a cool vibe inside, very Japanese, bar type seating for most of the restaurant, so pretty good if you're by yourself or for groups of 2. The prices are standard for ramen, maybe slightly high ($15-19 a bowl). The staff was very apologetic about things taking a little longer, but it was very understandable with how busy they were. The garlic ramen had a great flavor, the broth was really rich. The chasiu was a little dry and thin though, so that wasn't the highlight. We added an egg (ajitama) to the shoyu ramen for $2.50 but it was not very flavorful and the yolk was a bit over cooked, so wouldn't necessarily recommend adding that. The Yaki Imo Creme Brûlée (Japanese sweet potato) though was SO good. Great flavor, not too sweet, perfect brulee. Would recommend getting it for dessert! Ramen was not bad overall, the broth was the highlight for that, but overall 5 stars for the excellent service and excellent dessert!
One of the few places open until 9pm on a Sunday night in Hilo. The last time we visited the big island, we wanted to try it, but never had time. Because of our recent rainy weather, we decided to have dinner here. As we arrived, there were a few people waiting in line. We signed in on the wait list and looked over the menu. Wait time was only about 5 minutes before we were seated. The place has a feel of a Japanese ramen bar with many of the menu items and specials all around the restaurant. They do have some different ramen offerings rather than your same old tonkotsu ones. We decided on one of the specials, hakata ramen, with a really flavorful pork marrow soup base. We also ordered one of their recommended egg drop ramen which has a really light taste with the egg drop soup texture. Both dishes we ordered were prepared nicely with perfectly cooked noodles. Wait staff were very friendly and helpful, and food came out in a timely manner. It was a perfect meal for the gloomy weather.
I saw some reviews and decided to make it a stop while in Hilo area. I was not disappointed at all. The menu is very much authentic Japanese dishes since this is a branch of a restaurant that is in Japan. Staff was very nice to explain us any questions on any of the dishes we had. I ended up ordering garlic noodles and we also had chicken cutlets with rice. Both came out perfectly the way we wanted. They also got more garlic for me in case I wanted that. The pork broth was soooo good and flavorful. While in Hilo, this is a must try.
Awesome spot in Hilo. The restaurant itself has a cozy, authentic ramen house vibe that reminded me of Japan. The staff were super friendly, and while there was a short wait (it's one of the few spots that was open later in Hilo), it was not bad. Got the takoyaki as an app which was alright and nothing special. The noodles are where this place really shines. We ordered the Kakuni Tonkotsu Miso Ramen and the Abura Soba, and both were fantastic. The pork belly in the Kakuni was tender, flavorful, and the miso tonkotsu broth had great authentic flavor. The noodles had the perfect firmness, just as I ordered. I don't often see Abura Soba on menus, so I was really happy to find it here and it did not disappoint. If you are in Hilo late and looking for food or want pretty good Japanese Ramen, definitely stop by.
7/25/25 Tetsumen Ramen 697 Manono St Ste 103 Hilo, HI 96720 We went for an early dinner on a Friday. It's in the Manono Street Marketplace across the street from Big Island Candies. Parking was plentiful with most of the other businesses closed. We were seated promptly at the counter. Most of space consists of counter seating with two large booths and a table. Serve was a little slow but attentive, they were quite busy. We had the Plenty Vegetable Ramen and Taiwan Ramen. The Taiwan Ramen had an egg and not so much pork, was on the small side and not that spicy. My vegetable ramen was excellent with a tasty miso broth, a large piece of tasty pork medallion and plenty of vegetables; mostly cabbage, corn and mushroom. It was satisfying and filling. There is an extensive menu of ramen, additions, appetizers and even sushi. Definite repeat, especially for the Plenty Vegetable Ramen.
We were going to go across the lot but ended up here instead. It's a very cozy space but a fair bit of seating. They definitely have ac issues so I might avoid on a hot day. There was a sign that said "sushi chef away in Japan." True or not I think it gave some street cred. I like that there is a list of options for doneness of ramen. Normally I do al dente at home but I panicked and said medium. I don't remember what it was but I think it has the same name as the place. It was good. The noodles were flat and not curly. Not sure how I feel about that. I think I prefer curly. My mom got the mackerel katsu. I've never had mackerel before. I tried for the first time. It was truly disgusting but my mom assures me that is what it should taste like. So she was a big fan. Our cucumber appetizer was kind of lame. It was oddly cut and didn't really taste like much. Overall solid authentic ramen with lots of choices!!!
I have never eaten more garlic in my life in one sitting lol. I love garlic and ramen but THE garlic ramen was a bit too much garlic. It was still super good but I'd probably get something else if I come back. The broth was made with cooked garlic then it was topped with raw and fried garlic. Their cold noodle was great but the portion was smaller. The atmosphere is super cute and reminds me of Japan. Mostly bar seating inside. Great service!
Expectations were looooow after seeing a review that the ramen is not super authentic. With that said, I was at the point of our trip that I just NEED some Asian food and soupy noods in my life. The restaurant is cute and the whole experience felt very authentically Japanese - the menu, all the laminated specials on the walls, diagrams and drawings about customizing noodle firmness etc. Ajitama tonkotsu miso ramen: Decent, noodles were a good texture, egg was good. Big hearty piece of chasiu with nice balance of fat and lean. Appreciate how you can customize the noodle firmness, amount of pork fat, and garlic flakes or oil. Chicken katsu curry: Average curry, chicken katsu was pretty good. Curry also had pieces of shredded pork inside. Big portion (2 scoops of rice). Mini fried rice: This was a $5 add-on with the purchase of a ramen. This was not good and not up our alley... There is a flavor inside that just tasted off. Maybe salted fish? It's a really strong flavor but we couldn't put our finger on it. The friend rice doesn't say what it contains or any special flavors so were just expecting plain egg fried rice. Service was warm and welcoming. The staff was also very helpful and offered us a few free refills of soda. Not our favorite meal in Hilo but a decent option for sure!
No matter what and when, me and my husband will end up at a Japanese restaurant. I really enjoyed this restaurant in Hilo. We were beach and waterfall hopping and this was such a great stop for us for a meal. I got the mini ramen, love that they have this option btw with chicken katsu to share and my husband got the ramen and takoyaki. Chicken katsu was great with the sauce, it was tasty along with the mac salad. The ramen was also pretty decent! They have a good amount of choices to choose from the menu but really can't go wrong with the katsu and ramen! Service was really great too, servers were very kind. Food came out quick. Highly recommend eating here if you're craving some Japanese food.

Food 4/5 - My Plenty Vegetable Ramen in Miso soup was 4/5. It was loaded with vegetables which was great. I wish the soup was a bit more flavorful. My husband's Tonkotsu Friend Ramen was really tasty 4.5/5. He just wished it had a bit more sauce. The cucumber bomb was ok 3/5. Some bites were pretty salty. Service 5/5 - The waitress was friendly and accommodating. I wanted to add an egg to my ramen and she brought it out quickly. Ambiance 5/5 - This is a super cute place. It felt like an authentic Japanese noodle shop. Almost every inch of the wall was covered in something. A fun dinning experience. read more

Horrible service at this place. Seems like a bunch of kids working here who don't care. The food was decent. We ordered "The Garlic Ramen" and it was a pretty simple ramen with a huge side of raw garlic. What was strange to me was the huge side of raw garlic was whole pieces of garlic with a garlic press. We had to press our own garlic into the ramen. I'm sure they thought it was a great idea to give the experience of pressing garlic to the patron, but honestly, it was not something I was anticipating on doing let alone having to press a whole dish of raw garlic cloves. Not my idea of an enjoyable meal when I had to press my own garlic. The light deep fried tofu did not look anything like the photo in the menu. I took a side by side photo of our dish and the menu. Thought that was weird as well. Probably would not come back based on service and the strangeness of the dishes. read more

The ramen is just alright -- other Yelpers were raving about it, but I think it was just okay. Soup is decent, noodles are fine, but it's way too oily. I got the garlic ramen, and it was fun to use the little garlic press to add fresh garlic to my soup. Service is decent, staff is nice and friendly. I came here by myself, good for parties of all sizes though! Plenty of seating options. If you're in the area and craving ramen, you can consider stopping by. But, if you're living elsewhere on the Hilo side, it's not worth driving all the way over here for the ramen. read more

There's not many spots that solely focuses on authentic Japanese ramen here in Hilo. Seeing that this place opened up a year or two ago, I was very excited to try it out. It's located in a food area where Hawaiian Style Cafe and Miyo's Restaurant are. There's a few stalls reserved for the restaurant but there's ample stalls to park in. When I first tried this place when they first opened, I didn't care for it. It was waaaaay too oily and since that time, I didn't go back until a year later. I decided to give it another try, and thankfully I did. The quality of the ramen was sooooo much better than before. It was a LOT LESS oily, allowing my stomach walk out happy. I would always get their shoyu or miso tonkotsu ajitama ramens when I visit. The ramens come with customizations: Noodle firmness (soft, normal, firm), garlic oil, pork oil, and now onion powder. I usually get my noodles firm with normal amounts of garlic and pork oil. The broth is really really rich and flavorful that you won't find elsewhere in Hilo. Even their small bowls are really flavorful. These bowls look tiny at first but once you start eating them, there's definitely no regret in getting it! These can be ordered with your ramen or individually. One of my friends ordered a side dish of deep fried tofu, and it smelled amazing! Never got to try it but judging off the smell, I bet it was good. I am really glad I gave this place another chance after a year. If you're ever in Hilo, definitely give this place a try. Authentic ramen is hard to find in the Big Island! read more
Must get - gyoza. Def closer to a 4.5. Opted to 4 because Tonkatsu broth was pretty bland, even with garlic, butter, and spicy ball! But the Curry Ramen is super flavorful. So you're choice! This place is super authentic, almost bizarre to see! Definitely worth a stop if you need a ramen fix. read more
Note: Around 8pm on busy days, they run out of many items, so I would recommend coming earlier than later! When we came, they were out of curry, shave ice, and kakuni (pork belly). And they were almost out of karaage! After being seated, a server will provide a slip with a QR code. You can access the menu and order from your phone. If you're uncertain, you can ask a server to explain and they'll willingly share how the ordering works and the differences between the different dishes. Food: All the ramen were really good. You can customize the toppings according to your taste. The Char siu pieces are THICK! A little more cooked than I'm used to, but still good. If you like spicy, I recommend getting the spicy ball! It's just a ball of spicy paste. Definitely adds more flavor. Ajitama was a little more done than normal - the yolk is not as runny, and it doesn't have the rich flavor of being marinated for 24-48 hours as is customary. Little things aside, the portions are very reasonable, the broth is delectable, and service was good. I'd be happy to come back another (earlier) time and try some of the things that were not available this time (like the kakuni & curry!) read more

Authentic flavors and a wide selection of toppings and soup stock, with the option to select the softness of your noodles. The egg drop soup ramen was delicious! Fast and attentive service. Yelping around for a ramen place and Tetsumen popped up. Glad we gave it a try . I loved the Japanese counter sitting ... brings me back to ramen shops in Japan . We ordered one big Pork Kukani with extra everything. The broth was very tasty and I like how they let you order on the phone and chose your noodles firmness ! We were a party of 10 so we got to try different ramen. Food was really good! The special ramen FYI is SUPER BIG and it may be good for two people. We also ordered the takoyaki which was yummy too. Food overall is 5/5 Service was quite lacking 2/5. We had to order via mobile which was fine but none of the servers ever checked on us and we had to ask for stuff several times. Issue: the host basically just had us wait while they sat smaller parties that arrived way later than us in bigger tables that would've accommodated our large group. For example: they sat 2 people in a 6 chair table. Then kept on asking us if we were fine in the counter which we agreed to. Eventually we had to split 8 in 1 table in 2 separate. Would I return? Yes. With the hope that we get better service next time. read more

I was looking for a place to have lunch while in Hilo and came across Tetsumen Ramen. Tetsumen Ramen is a Japanese ramen chain, and their specialty is tonkotsu ramen. Located in Manono Street Marketplace and across from Big Island Candies, this Hilo location is the chain's only one outside of Asia. Parking is super easy as there are plenty of spaces in the lot. The restaurant is small, but it has a decent amount of seats. I walked in and was promptly seated. The menu has a lot of options - it goes on for pages listing all of the different ramen broths and customizations, curry and rice dishes, and sides. The staff was very friendly, and my server patiently helped me decide on what to order. I went with the shoyu broth and got the ajitama ramen with a side of karaage. It took a little while to get my food, but the staff was very apologetic about the delay. The food was good. The broth was rich and flavorful. The karaage was crispy and tasty. The prices are reasonable, and the portion size was just right for me. Overall, the meal was a very rewarding lunch for my super hungry stomach despite the delay with getting my food. I would come back if I am in Hilo again and am in the mood for ramen. read more

This place had good reviews and how can you go to Hawaii and not get ramen at least once? The wait was less than 30 minutes and when you sit, you scan a QR code to order through your phone. * Shoyu Ajitama + Spicy Ball * Miso Ajitama Both bowls were pretty good and service is on point. Would I come back again? Probably not, but it's definitely a good place to bookmark and try at least once. read more

We we came here at 5:15 pm on 5/24/23 and were excited to try this place with high ratings, and upon arrival, a server/hostess asked how many people, bar or table? We said two people and said we would wait for a table. I told the server we would wait in the car because it's raining, and the cashier told us to wait outside. Server/Hostess took my number down and said no problem, we will call you. 5:56 pm I checked back in, and the cashier ( same girl with the attitude who told us to wait outside, said oh we called your name, but you weren't here?") I said," Oh ok, well, you have my number, but you guys didn't text or call me. She gave me a face and rolled her eyes with so much attitude. I wanted to leave right away, but I figured I'd forget it. Maybe they had a bad day. Sat us to a bar table which is the same as the table where we declined. Zero hospitality, zero responsibility taken. I told them we would eat somewhere else, thanks. Honestly, this was the second time I've felt unwelcome and some prejudice in Hilo. I will never spend money at a place that treats customers like this. Horrible experience. read more

Cute Japanese ramen spot. Inside looks like ramen shops in Japan! Ordered the appetizers: crispy tofu and the takoyaki. And omg they were both so so good. Really the best takoyaki I've had. Then ordered the Taiwan ramen, which was a bit too spicy for me. I loved the ramen overall, just probably could have ordered to be less spicy, that was my mistake. It was still good and worth visiting. read more
This spot is legit if you're looking for saimin. Very fast arrival of food and great service. Average prices and cozy spot. The menu is traditional and slightly difficult to figure out if you're not familiar. The place is a bit compact and always full so make sure to get there early. read more

i've never been to japan but tetsumen is what i imagine a traditional ramen house in japan to look and feel like (based on pictures and videos i've seen of them at least). we came midday without a reservation and were able to get a stool seat, which we were happy to take because i felt it added to some of the authenticity (again, based on my minimal knowledge of ramen restaurants in japan). staff was very attentive and helpful. ordering was easy - scan and make your selections on your phone. now the food. we had the gyoza as an appetizer. delicious. DELICIOUS! that is all i can say. i ordered the ajitama tonkotsu shoyu - best shoyu i've ever had. the broth is so thick, rich, and creamy. there is so much flavor, i could have sipped on a side of this alone. the pork was extremely tender, melt in your mouth good. it carried the flavor of the ramen but also still had its own distinct taste so as to not get overpowered by the star shoyu. the portions are very hearty, so an app and a whole ramen was more than enough to hold me over from early evening through the night. i will definitely be returning, this was worth the drive from kona. some tips for travelers - we stayed in kona and got on the road at about 7AM. we grabbed breakfast then took the southern route stopping at papakolea beach, punaluu black sand beach, and the valcano park. we then made our way up to hilo late afternoon and ate at tetsumen, grabbing desert around the corner at big island candy company. id recommend staying a night in hilo, but the drive back to kona is still doable cutting across the island (1hr and 15m back). so if you are staying in kona, do not let the trip to hilo deter you. make a day of it and definitely make tetsumen your ramen destination. read more

We ordered the standard ramen and the garlic ramen. I added pork belly to the garlic ramen. Everything tasted great. I really liked that they put the fresh garlic on the side so you control the taste... of course I used them all ... staff was super nice and helpful also! read more
