One of the few places open until 9pm on a Sunday night in Hilo. The last time we visited the big island, we wanted to try it, but never had time. Because of our recent rainy weather, we decided to have dinner here. As we arrived, there were a few people waiting in line. We signed in on the wait list and looked over the menu. Wait time was only about 5 minutes before we were seated. The place has a feel of a Japanese ramen bar with many of the menu items and specials all around the restaurant. They do have some different ramen offerings rather than your same old tonkotsu ones. We decided on one of the specials, hakata ramen, with a really flavorful pork marrow soup base. We also ordered one of their recommended egg drop ramen which has a really light taste with the egg drop soup texture. Both dishes we ordered were prepared nicely with perfectly cooked noodles. Wait staff were very friendly and helpful, and food came out in a timely manner. It was a perfect meal for the gloomy weather.
We came by about an hour before closing and there was a pretty long list of names before us, but we were down to wait. We waited about 30 min and they were kindly still letting people in even though it was close to closing. Seating is a bit tight but it's a cool vibe inside, very Japanese, bar type seating for most of the restaurant, so pretty good if you're by yourself or for groups of 2. The prices are standard for ramen, maybe slightly high ($15-19 a bowl). The staff was very apologetic about things taking a little longer, but it was very understandable with how busy they were. The garlic ramen had a great flavor, the broth was really rich. The chasiu was a little dry and thin though, so that wasn't the highlight. We added an egg (ajitama) to the shoyu ramen for $2.50 but it was not very flavorful and the yolk was a bit over cooked, so wouldn't necessarily recommend adding that. The Yaki Imo Creme Brûlée (Japanese sweet potato) though was SO good. Great flavor, not too sweet, perfect brulee. Would recommend getting it for dessert! Ramen was not bad overall, the broth was the highlight for that, but overall 5 stars for the excellent service and excellent dessert!
One of the most legit, if not THEE most legit, ramen place in Hilo. Are there others? Not counting saimin... I didn't think so. First off, there's lots of parking, even though you're sharing the lot with Hawaiian Style Cafe. But when you walk in, you can't help but get a feel of authentic Japanese noodle restaurant atmosphere. The enthusiastic greeting fully supports that. The menu provides a great many items to choose from. This was a late lunch and I was very hungry, so I started with their "stick" gyoza. For 5 pieces I thought it was very pricey, but then I tried one and considered it probably the best gyoza I've ever had. Seriously. Wonderful filling with a great mix of crunch and tender bite. Delicious. Then the ramen. I had the shoyu standard bowl, and wow, what a strong, tasty broth with great mix of the standard toppings. The pork wasn't as tender as I'm used to from other ramen restaurants, but it was still tasty, and overall the bowl was a slurping delight. The dessert cheesecake was like a standard cheesecake, nothing special. Service was friendly, although ordering your food is via qr code. Next time I'm back home I'm definitely going to try something different here. Loved this place. Very much.
I saw some reviews and decided to make it a stop while in Hilo area. I was not disappointed at all. The menu is very much authentic Japanese dishes since this is a branch of a restaurant that is in Japan. Staff was very nice to explain us any questions on any of the dishes we had. I ended up ordering garlic noodles and we also had chicken cutlets with rice. Both came out perfectly the way we wanted. They also got more garlic for me in case I wanted that. The pork broth was soooo good and flavorful. While in Hilo, this is a must try.
Awesome spot in Hilo. The restaurant itself has a cozy, authentic ramen house vibe that reminded me of Japan. The staff were super friendly, and while there was a short wait (it's one of the few spots that was open later in Hilo), it was not bad. Got the takoyaki as an app which was alright and nothing special. The noodles are where this place really shines. We ordered the Kakuni Tonkotsu Miso Ramen and the Abura Soba, and both were fantastic. The pork belly in the Kakuni was tender, flavorful, and the miso tonkotsu broth had great authentic flavor. The noodles had the perfect firmness, just as I ordered. I don't often see Abura Soba on menus, so I was really happy to find it here and it did not disappoint. If you are in Hilo late and looking for food or want pretty good Japanese Ramen, definitely stop by.
The ramen was actually quite good, as good as the ones you may find in LA. The best meal I've had in the big island so far. The wait was longer than I thought but the ramen was worth the wait.
7/25/25 Tetsumen Ramen 697 Manono St Ste 103 Hilo, HI 96720 We went for an early dinner on a Friday. It's in the Manono Street Marketplace across the street from Big Island Candies. Parking was plentiful with most of the other businesses closed. We were seated promptly at the counter. Most of space consists of counter seating with two large booths and a table. Serve was a little slow but attentive, they were quite busy. We had the Plenty Vegetable Ramen and Taiwan Ramen. The Taiwan Ramen had an egg and not so much pork, was on the small side and not that spicy. My vegetable ramen was excellent with a tasty miso broth, a large piece of tasty pork medallion and plenty of vegetables; mostly cabbage, corn and mushroom. It was satisfying and filling. There is an extensive menu of ramen, additions, appetizers and even sushi. Definite repeat, especially for the Plenty Vegetable Ramen.
We were going to go across the lot but ended up here instead. It's a very cozy space but a fair bit of seating. They definitely have ac issues so I might avoid on a hot day. There was a sign that said "sushi chef away in Japan." True or not I think it gave some street cred. I like that there is a list of options for doneness of ramen. Normally I do al dente at home but I panicked and said medium. I don't remember what it was but I think it has the same name as the place. It was good. The noodles were flat and not curly. Not sure how I feel about that. I think I prefer curly. My mom got the mackerel katsu. I've never had mackerel before. I tried for the first time. It was truly disgusting but my mom assures me that is what it should taste like. So she was a big fan. Our cucumber appetizer was kind of lame. It was oddly cut and didn't really taste like much. Overall solid authentic ramen with lots of choices!!!
Such a nice restaurant with delicious food! Service is fairly fast, we came in a big group pop and a couple items were missed but the waitress got the food to us eventually that we took to go! This restaurant is just like the restaurants you would find in Japan- such a nice experience!
Expectations were looooow after seeing a review that the ramen is not super authentic. With that said, I was at the point of our trip that I just NEED some Asian food and soupy noods in my life. The restaurant is cute and the whole experience felt very authentically Japanese - the menu, all the laminated specials on the walls, diagrams and drawings about customizing noodle firmness etc. Ajitama tonkotsu miso ramen: Decent, noodles were a good texture, egg was good. Big hearty piece of chasiu with nice balance of fat and lean. Appreciate how you can customize the noodle firmness, amount of pork fat, and garlic flakes or oil. Chicken katsu curry: Average curry, chicken katsu was pretty good. Curry also had pieces of shredded pork inside. Big portion (2 scoops of rice). Mini fried rice: This was a $5 add-on with the purchase of a ramen. This was not good and not up our alley... There is a flavor inside that just tasted off. Maybe salted fish? It's a really strong flavor but we couldn't put our finger on it. The friend rice doesn't say what it contains or any special flavors so were just expecting plain egg fried rice. Service was warm and welcoming. The staff was also very helpful and offered us a few free refills of soda. Not our favorite meal in Hilo but a decent option for sure!
I have never eaten more garlic in my life in one sitting lol. I love garlic and ramen but THE garlic ramen was a bit too much garlic. It was still super good but I'd probably get something else if I come back. The broth was made with cooked garlic then it was topped with raw and fried garlic. Their cold noodle was great but the portion was smaller. The atmosphere is super cute and reminds me of Japan. Mostly bar seating inside. Great service!
No matter what and when, me and my husband will end up at a Japanese restaurant. I really enjoyed this restaurant in Hilo. We were beach and waterfall hopping and this was such a great stop for us for a meal. I got the mini ramen, love that they have this option btw with chicken katsu to share and my husband got the ramen and takoyaki. Chicken katsu was great with the sauce, it was tasty along with the mac salad. The ramen was also pretty decent! They have a good amount of choices to choose from the menu but really can't go wrong with the katsu and ramen! Service was really great too, servers were very kind. Food came out quick. Highly recommend eating here if you're craving some Japanese food.
Amazing ramen spot in Hilo! I would highly recommend coming here if you are craving a delicious bowl of ramen! It totally reminded me of different places in Japan and in LA. Broth is super flavorful and rich and they allow you customize the noodles, spice level, etc. There are so many items to choose from on their menu which makes it difficult to choose since you would want to try everything! Great establishment with cool decor that reminds you of being in a ramen shop in Japan. Friendly and helpful staff that are attentive!

Craving ramen while on the island and we saw this place was open. Stopped in. Was given two choices to sit. Single typical ramen bar or two table set at the front of the restaurant. I think booths are for a party or 4 or more. But that wasn't a choice. Ramen was just eh. It was overall good but it was the first time I didn't finish a bowl of ramen. A friend got the dry ramen. That was actually pretty good and wished I had just ordered that. That staff. We'll younger crowd. So just into doing whatever amongst themselves. Not very attentive or observant to dinners. read more

Second time back within 5 years and it was just as good as I remember. Authentic Japanese ramen with plenty of toppings and piping hot broth. I've gotten both the shoyu and miso tonkotsu ramen and both were excellent. I would recommend for anyone craving ramen. read more
On a wet cold rainy day, you need a good ramen. Tetsumen didn't fail us! You gotta have some Japanese food when in Hawaii. I saw the ramen here and just have to try it. I got the tonkatsu ramen and my husband got the beef curry chicken katsu with rice. My ramen was very good but extremely rich. Near the end it was too rich, but still good. My husbands plate was awesome. He loved it! read more

So on a Saturday night we were lucky enough to get in with our party of 10 but splitting up in half. Our server was Reiki & Daelyn and they provided excellent customer service. A small bit of Japan in Hilo. Tetsumen brings ramen to Hilo. The question is will Hilo residents accept the higher price? If you've been to Japan you know that Ramen - especially Tonkotsu ramen is nothing like saimin. In taste and preparation. It's easy to assume that it's the same and to assume that this place is way overpriced. I found the prices to be similar to Honolulu and in fact their dishes were just as good as what you can find there. This place is not afraid to go beyond too. Their garlic ramen, you can order fried garlic on the side and it comes with something like 8 cloves to squeeze into your bowl! They give about a 1/4 to 1/3rd more noodles than Honolulu too. I ordered extra noodles and I really shouldn't have. They give a LOT. Not only that, for $5 more you can get a side bowl of curry that is a serving in itself!!!!!! But the main point is that the ramen tastes good and the other dishes are good too like the donburi. The decor is cool and they do COVID protocol too. It may be expensive for some but I think it's worth it. read more

After so many giant sized Hawaiian sized meals, I thought I'd eat something a little lighter...or so I thought! I've eaten Ramen in Japan and California, Hawaii has a large Japanese population so I figured it should be great here, and it is! $14 Tonkatsu Charsu Ramen...unlike Cali and Japan whom give you one piece charsu, this place gives you 3 huge thick slabs of pork. The bowl and noodle portion were huge too...all of it in delicious, hot, fatty pork broth...yum! My plot to have a "lighter" meal was foiled...but it was worth it! read more

I got the miso tonkatsu flavored ramen with tofu instead of noodles (healthy option). Never seen that before and loved that they even had that. The chashu and braised pork belly were excellent as well as the ajitama and poached egg. The only thing I would have changed is that the broth was a bit over salted. read more

This is our Hilo go to place when we want a quick sit down meal with no waiting times. Food is very consistent. Service is always quick, servers very nice, atmosphere is comfy, booths are large and roomy. We love the food here, warning portions are large so unless you starving, be mindful you might have left overs for the next day. This is Hilo and the portions are always so large or over generous. Have you tried @tetsumenhawaii's new monthly special, their Omurice? Omurice is a Japanese omelet-wrapped fried rice with Demi-Glacé Sauce. It's only available this month but only at certain times (e.g., Sun, Mon, Tues, Fri, Sat from 11 am -3 pm), and supplies are limited, so grab yours quick! I stood outside their doors at 10:56 am, right before they opened, and I'm glad I did. Want to know what I thought? Let's talk about it. First things first, look at that presentation. She's absolutely stunning. Now I've never had Omurice before, so I don't know if there was anything in particular that I should have looked for in terms of flavor, but for me, this was incredibly delicious. That demi-glace was super rich and had a deep beef flavor with a subtle sweetness that paired beautifully with the fluffy and soft eggs and savory fried rice underneath. This Omurice exceeded my expectations, and I would love for this to be added as a regular menu item. I don't want it to end! I also got a side of fried takoyaki and char siu with eggs (over medium). The takoyaki was crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside, and very umami overall. I wish there would have been more pieces of octopus in the center, but other than that, it was good. But that char siu! Wow! I loved every bite. The meat was flavorful, juicy, and tender and seemed as if it were braised and then fried before being served to get that nice crisp on both sides of the meat. Thank you, @tetsumenhawaii, for introducing me to new food (i.e., Omurice) and making it a fun and tasty experience. Everything was a 10/10 for me: the food, the staff, and the vibes. Keep up the great work! Tetsumen is an excellent restaurant, regardless. It's definitely one of my fav places to get Japanese comfort food and ramen on the island. Lots of parking available! You order via qr code which is pretty cool. There's a lot of options but we went with the shoyu char siu and garlic ramen. Shoyu char siu came with 4 pieces of meat, but it was a little cold.. husband just pushed it into the broth to warm it up. The broth was savory and full of shoyu flavor. We both added the ajitama (seasoned egg) - it was the perfect runny egg, you won't regret getting it. Garlic ramen had a generous portion of noodles and had a more salty/savory broth than the shoyu. I was surprised that I'd press my own garlic but it definitely added that extra boldness in flavor. It only comes with one piece of char siu which was enough for me but you can add a topping if you want more. From the picture, it looked like it came with corn, but you'll want to mark corn when you order. Would come here again when we visit hilo! read more

Great Japanese ramen restaurant in Hilo This place was bustling and we had some wait time before we could get seated, party of 7! We were just glad we were able to dine in considering Hawaii has one of the strictest covid guidelines in the nation. When we were finally led to our table/booth no menu were given. Ordering process was through a QR code. We were instructed to order using a QR bar code and directly placing our orders using our phones. It was like ordering takeout. There were lots of options from the menu. I had the Fried Chicken Curry Rice. It was a generous portion with 6-pcs of karaage (fried chicken), curry sauce made of carrot, onion, potato, and pork meat... and 2 scoops of rice. Oh, and also a scoop of Hawaiian macaroni salad. I'd say the portion sizes were for Sumo's LoL! Definitely shareable. It was tasty and delicious. I love fried chicken! Find this restaurant at the Manono Street Marketplace in Hilo. A nice break from Hawaiian loco moco and kalua pork options. Don't get me wrong, the Hawaiian Style Cafe across the same parking lot is still worth a stop if you're in the area. Masks on, sanitizer, and temperature taken from your wrist upon entering. There's "bar" seating similar to Ichiran without the individual booth curtains but the menu DIY follows similar style. QR menu option available and encouraged here, there is ramen, donburi and other small appetizers available. The pricing is a bit high (and I come from the Bay Area) for the portion but it's one of the few places open on Sunday. Taste wise, it's good but don't expect to come away wowed. Came here for take out for dinner. They separated the noodles and toppings from the soup. Additionally, they put extra garlic in little containers in case we wanted more garlic flavor. We ordered the garlic ramen and actually enjoyed our meal in the parking lot as we just wanted to sample their food. The ramen noodles themselves were skinny and had good chew. Always a good sign when the noodles have some integrity. The soup itself was rich, creamy and had good garlic flavor. Loved this place!!! Excellent Ramen and tons of choices. You're even able to customize your ramen. I ordered the shoyu tonkatsu ramen and shared the Stick Gyoza with my husband. Everything was delicious! We love the stick gyoza too, it was a little different from traditional one, but we actually liked it better. The broth was excellent and the soft boiled egg was perfectly done. Our server was also really great! She was upbeat and happy to answer questions about the food and checked on us often. This is a cute traditional style place and ample seating. It wasn't busy when we got there, but when we were leaving around 5 p.m it seemed to be getting busier. It has lots of parking and reserved spots for that business. It's also in a place that has all locally owned business which is awesome. read more

If you love ramen, this is definitely your place. On a cold December night in town, we knew Tetsumen would hit the spot to warm us up. Sooo many choices and quite busy on a weeknight. I got my favorite tonkotsu miso ramen and was not disappointed. I got it the way I wanted with extra garlic flavor and garlic oil. You order on your phones and customize your ramen to the thickness of noodles, the oil in the broth, the flavor, and the toppings. Quite convenient if you're always on your phone. My other half also got his favorite, the chicken katsu curry . Unfortunately his plate came in very late that our group was halfway done with our meals. Nonetheless, he ordered a second plate to go. read more

I recommend adding extra oil for flavor. I got the garlic ramen and it seemed more hype than flavor. Broth was very bland for a regular bowl. I did like their noodles (I requested firm), the included slice pork, and fresh garlic cloves that you could put through a garlic press into your ramen. I added a poached egg and that was done nicely. The ratio of toppings to noodles is not ad balanced as I would have liked (not enough toppings). The venue is somewhat trendy and probably caters to the millennial crowd. For example they mostly have bar stool seating (see photo). There's 2 rows of 8 seats of these. Booth tables (can sit 4 to 6 I think) face the windows.Not sure if I will return to this venue when in Hilo again. read more

April 8, 2024. My first time here but my lunch partners have been here many times. We signed in and the wait was about 20 minutes. It took about that long to be seated. There are lots of choices and decisions when ordering Ramen. All of them are good. I ordered the Ajitama Firm Rich Rich and shared a side order of Chicken Namban. It was very tasty. Our server was excellent! I'll be back when I visit Hilo again. read more
