The shop is well stocked and laid out with fresh counted for fish, meat, cheese and cakes. They have an excellent wine section with a specialist roaming around nearby :) As a regular I have come to know the people that work there so it makes the experience all the more enjoyable. The quick pay service and the free newspaper for myWaitrose members is an added bonus. I go shopping on my motorbike so it helps that I can pack my rucksack and saddle bags as I go rather than all at the end of my shop at the checkout. Enjoy :)

Morrisons 'market place' is a unique set out for a supermarket and you can find fresh fruit and veg along side a fish monger and butchers where just like the advert shows you, the staff will be more than happy to talk you through whatever cut of meat you require or even fillet your fish for you. There is also a bakery and rotisserie offering yummy treats such as pork pies and sausage rolls as well as hot roast chickens. Another good point worth mentioning about Morrisons is that they do from time to time do brilliant offers. It's worth looking out for them on the internet or in your local paper.

It is large enough to have a full range of goods that you would expect of Morrisons and is conveniently located for York city centre. Being brand new it is also clean and specious, There is also a large car park with petrol station and car wash available. Petrol & Diesel is usually the cheapest in York as Morrison's always seem to be the first retailer to announce price changes. This store is also on the same site as a large Homebase store and Frankie & Benny's restaurant!

This is the only big supermarket in town that I know of (apart from M&S but they don't sell everything I wanted.) There is no big Asda/Tesco/Morrisons in town though. It's a nice big Sainsburys and they sell everything I would need, lots of frozen food, fresh fruit and veg, tins, bakery, household cleaning, etc. It was busy when I went but they have lots of tills and self scanners so there was no queueing.

This particular one is in Clifton and is a useful little shop as it opens quite late (about 11pm) and has a cash machine. They sell a smaller selection of the usual Sainsbury's stock although it is a bit pricey (I always think Sainsbury's is a bit though.) The only thing I don't like about this shop is that it isn't in the best area and there are often people hanging outside in groups which can be a little intimidating.

There was a small selection of most essential goods including a Costa Coffee machine, I mainly come in just to pick up some milk to take back to my hotel which I managed with little trouble. The Free From range was poor and non-existent, but this is pretty much the case in all Tesco Express stores and rival alternatives such as Sainsbury's Local. For ease of going in and out quicker, having more self-service tills compared to the slightly understaffed manned tills would be better, as I recall there was only 2, a store of this kind would often have at least double that (self-service tills) closer to my home in Manchester city centre. The staff didn't stand out here either. I'm struggling here, pretty much an average store in most regards with the selection of most items being small but it is one of the better Tesco stores out of the three branches they have in the centre of York in terms of size and location so I do feel a three-star rating is warranted.

I visited here to pick up some essentials such as milk to pick up some essentials on my way back to the Doubletree by Hilton York, where I was spending the evening. The store is pretty much your average Sainsbury's convenience store, the selection is okay but not excellent and it is open until 11 pm every day which is ideal for the location. The store basically has most things you'd want in a convenience store, despite certain issues such as the staff not seeming too friendly which was a shame and the issue with the condition of some milk, for example, the first one I picked up appeared to have some sort of leak, so that was frustrating. Satisfactory, average convenience store so I feel this Sainsbury's Local branch in a good location in York centre deserves a slightly generous three-star rating.

At long last York has it's very own Chinese supermarket!…read more Before chi yip opened, I had to trek all the way to Leeds city centre to stock up on all my essential Chinese cookery ingredients! There is a wide range of exotic looking fruit and veg at chi yip, some you won't recognise, some you will! you can also pick up lovely stir fry essentials such as delicious pak choi. The freezer cabinets have a wide range of precooked dim sums that you can take home and cook yourself (usually steam or deep fry) As well as frozen meat and fish. You can also buy sacks of rice, it's much cheaper to buy like this if you have room to store it!! There is a good selection of canned and jarred goods, some really interesting items, quite a number of them I've never heard of, but many that I have and would love to have a go cooking with! I would say if your new to Chinese cookery, but want to be experimental than have a recipe in mind and take the list of ingredients with you, otherwise you might get a bit over whelmed at how much 'stuff' there actually is! Last but not least is the fish and meat counter, where there is a member of staff on hand to serve you - there is also tanks of live crabs and lobster so you can literally choose which poor creature you want to take home and cook
