This marvelous grocery store totally surprised me. We travelled by train on this last European…read moretrip, we went back and forth about whether we should drive or train or do a combination of both. We decided on going the train route totally. Driving on the left hand side is not something to choose easily....I have only done it once before in 1982 in Jamaica and it was fine because I was incredibly young and the roads were less travelled back then but it's hard to change. I know many accidents/ deaths that have happened because of this. Anyway we decided to do the train bit. When we arrived at the York train station we had some time to wait so Joe said " Go check out the Booths" I already knew this is a grocery store chain in England and had seen it before But I was blown away at this one and was surprised to find it at the Windermere train station. I spent a good 45 minutes in there and purchased many items for our next destination. Beautiful produce and it also had a whole bakery area and a area with pharmacy type items too. When Joe insisted I go honestly I was a bit annoyed like Why? Lol Great store! Best in town!

Booths by a wide margin is the largest and nicest grocery store in Windermere. Excellent selection…read moreof produce, international and British staples, and a massive wine and liquor section. I made several Thai dishes and Booths had all the necessary ingredients from fish sauce to palm sugar to dried kaffir lime leaves. Prices are much lower and the selection much larger than you'd find in London. Try £26 for a bottle of Veuve, and yes we bought a case for Christmas lunch! If you're self catering in the Lake District and are looking for quality well above your average Tesco Express, be sure to make the drive to Booths.

The shelves are absolutley…read morechoc-a-block with row upon row upon row of immaculately presented groceries of endless variety and flavour! Wow! If, like me, you ever struggle to choose between about three sandwhich options then you may be liable to be frozen in cant-decide panic at the endless choices presented to you by Abu Bakar! Even the halva section appears to be never ending! They sell a wide selection of vegetables, a broad variety of juices, endless rows of pulses, spices, herbs, cakes, bread, jars of pickled items, huge sacks of rice and flour - possibly aimed at businesses but may be handy if you live in a big house, loads of condiments (including some very mysterious and tantalising items such as a pot of chololate and cherry something...spread?...whose ingredients list was in Polish only). Homeware-wise they have pots, pans, crockery and kitchen utensils. There is also a halal meat counter. As Susan mentions, Abu Bakar is aimed at the Aisian community, but for anyone like me with boringly British culinary habits it is a fascinating and exciting place of endless possibilities and obscure and intriguing ingredients.

Sitting somewhere between supermarket and corner shop, Abubakar is aimed mostly at the Asian…read morecommunity, with a large selection of Halal meats and more exotic fruits and spices, but it's also a popular spot with local residents and students looking to stock up. They often have good deals on fresh fruit like mangoes, and you can pick up all the ingredients you could possibly need to cook a decent curry from scratch. The staff are really helpful, and the nearby parking means it's ideal if you need to do a large shop but don't want to do the supermarket run. Worth stopping by to check out the huge range of exotic fruit juices - hangover heaven.

According to the locals, this is a bigger store than the regular ones. If I get a chance to visit a regular store, I'll confirm, lol. This one does have 2 levels, and you can take the lift (elevator) or the escaltors escalators. The escalator going down wasn't working the times I've been, but just walk down anyway. They have cashiers for check out as well as self check-out lanes. Prices here are awesome! I'm a huge fan of their bakery bread and the snacks. Their sparkling water game is pretty strong, too. Don't be shocked if I check in here again, lol!

If you're around Liverpool, Tesco's of all versions are dotted around places: metro, local, express, superstore. If there are any more, you'll have to let me know! The Liverpool One branch of Superstore is not actually the most super I have come across in Liverpool as there is one in Litherland which is gargantuan in comparison. However, Liverpool One Tesco is certainly what the town needs. You still have plenty of choice here, a variety of sections such as deli, clothes and international foods to keep you adding more to your basket! I find this place more of a relaxing and enjoyable shopping experience as opposed to the Metro version by the big screen, because its more spacious and offers an abundance of products. The location isn't great if you're driving there as it'll cost you pounds to park somewhere nearby but certainly convenient when you have other chores to do around town.

If you like Waitrose then you'll love Booths! If you like Waitrose then you'll love Booths! Pretty much that's all you need to know - with amazing produce in all categories, fresh butchers, great bakery and don't get me started on the beer - quite possibly the best selection I've ever seen in a supermarket (if you're in this Ilkley branch then make sure you get a number of the Ilkley beer) This one is actually smaller than the others I've been to like Kendall and in Cheshire but still pretty awesome. Therefore, imagine my delight at finding a supermarket experience that is actually pleasant. More than pleasant in fact. Give yourselves a round of applause Booths. What a great place to shop. It's a Northern small chain and it's all about tradition and quality products. First up, it's in Ilkley which is always a nice drive to and a lush town to have a gentle stroll around. So the location is a winner even if it's not the most practical place to go on a daily basis for me. The real selling point is the products though. We're talking excellent quality and fresh as the day is young. The vegetables are always tasty and fresh and I'm always excited to see artichokes on sale. I know I need to get out more. The deli counter is simply divine and I'm always partial to some marinated garlic whilst trying to avoid the stand out cakes in the bakery section. They've also got a great mix of bottled lagers and ciders from around the world and the wines are top quality too. It retains that shop local feel tom it without cutting back on the actual quality. If you've got time, stop off at the café too for some beautiful deserts and a good old cuppa. This is how food shopping should be. Now we're talking.
