I love Booths, but for some reason it took me years to realise that there was one just down the road in Ilkley. Oh happy, happy day. Like a supermarket but better, Booths stocks top quality local and national produce with a cheese aisle and alcohol section to die for. They partner up with local producers rather than ship everything in from halfway across the world, and as a result while the produce isn't always the cheapest it is invariably the best. Check out the wood-fired bread from Kendal, Booths own brand Garstang blue cheese from Lancashire or one of the huge range of locally brewed beers and ciders. Like a cross between Marks and Spencers and a farmer's market, Booths is ideal for those who want to shop locally but don't have the time to visit the market.

I went in to have a look and was pleasantly surprised. Many of their meat products come from local farmers - there are little signs next to the sausages saying 'Farmer Joe's', for example. It is pretty large for a butchers, well presented and clean. There are no dead chickens or rabbits hanging in the window either! If you're not a big meat eater then there are plenty of other Yorkshire products to purchase, like jams and chutney presented in the traditional way with frilly hats on instead of a plain old lid.

It's not really how you imagine your local butcher - it's a lot bigger, fancier and more modern inside. There's a lot more than just a single counter displaying meats, and it's worth going in just for a browse even if you're not buying, as the range is astonishing. The quantity of selection doesn't compromise quality, however, as the guys who run this place only source from the best farms in the region. Because of its reputation, its location, and the top of the range quality it provides, however, the prices are high, so it only gets four stars. For anyone really serious about their meat, or anyone with too much money on their hands, I'd point them in the direction of Lishman's.
