As mentioned by previous reviewers, a fun feature of the store is the travelators, which allow you take a trolley up to the clothing department. Even I, as mature as I clearly am, cannot resist the urge to walk the wrong way down these flat walkways, pretending to be Michael Jackson (before he went weird, of course!). The store itself offers most of the usual features, such as food, a bakery, fishmongers and entertainment. In all, a decent store with cheap prices on everyday goods.

The main disadvantage with the Hythe store is its proximity to the University of Essex. At weekends, the supermarket is overrun by students stocking up on cheap booze and crisps, meaning the store is extremely busy and a nightmare to shop in. Also, Tesco Hythe does not have quite the same range of non-food goods as its bigger brother up the road. In all, good but not perfect.

An Essex and East Anglian treasure which is a lovely experience for those who can usually only endure the supermarket warehouse agony. A favourite for those who remember when a shop was a display to impress the customer and there was personal counter service, not a big shed with "pay now" machines. One of the few remaining joys in this town iis to visit Gunton's. It is towards the end of changing Crouch Street which still has many individual businesses. You can usually find parking off London Road, Lexden and walk, or walk from Balkerne Hill after paying local parking tax. Just outside the Roman Wall so not far if using bus or train. It is traditional to the core as a grocery business (now with a formidable and wonderful online shop). A delight to enter and experience. "High end" merchandise, but not expensive and with loyal, discerning customers! NB. Morning cafe too.

It serves home made style produce from breads to Indian snacks. It serves up-market pre-packaged goods and has a great old fashioned coffee bar. But for all that you cannot mention Guntons without reference to the outstanding range of fresh coffee beans, the smell of which pervades the shop in an old-world comforting way. Without a doubt this is my favourite store in Colchester.

I stepped through the door…read moreand we were barked at by a rude man behind the counter 'you need a mask!', I was already wearing my mask and the lady I care for was wearing her medical exemption card on a sunflower lanyard for hidden disability. She quickly responded 'I have this' as she raised her medical exemption for him he simply said 'we don't accept those' whilst pointing at her. She was very hurt by this, I was shocked and appalled. She left a Facebook review and she received more abuse from the owner (refusing to believe her disability makes it unsafe for her to wear a mask despite not knowing her medical history) he removed her review and his friends left very nasty comments about her, all because she stood up for herself which was a big step for her to have the confidence to do. People like this make my job as a key worker and carer a lot harder. I have since been helping her to seek legal advise regarding this blatant discrimination. We have been in touch with the Equality Advisory Support Service who have confirmed she received discrimination and are helping us with our complaint. If you have a disability I would recommend you avoid this shop as they are discriminative.

There is often a great deal on at weekends known as 'dine in for £10' where you get mains, side, dessert and wine all for just a tenner! You end up saving a good bit of money on this offer. I wouldnt say there bread is that special, better off going to another baker on the high street.
