Having said that, I've recently discovered that silken tofu can be had in the health food shop in the Greenwich town centre. Anyway, this particular Sainsbury's outpost is a massive (read: American-style sprawl) store crammed with lots of products from fish sauce to doughnuts to Sauternes. If you're a car owning, one-stop-shop of a gal/guy living in SE LDN, then this might be your jam.

They have a rather small selection of ready-to-go meals, and I think they only get one delivery of pastries per day. But they're open early, they're open late, and their prices are good, in spite of being the only food option for the numerous hotels and upscale residential developments that have gone up nearby. They did have a pretty large selection in most areas I looked at the store including with desserts, yoghurts (Pots and Co!), to-go food and fruit juices, the latter was actually quite reasonably priced for a freshly squeezed juice. The store did seem to have an annoying habit of making announcements regularly, it felt like I couldn't walk down an aisle without "DING DONG DING DONG", eventually I muttered to myself "Welcome to Waitrose Canary Wharf please note... announcement for..." etc, I get they do need to do this but so constantly is just really irritating. The café area could have been larger however but I was overall impressed with this store in a useful location for Canary Wharf's shopping centres and tube/DLR stations. 4*

The rotisserie and curry section is VERY popular and good value with office workers popping out at lunchtime. The seating gets really busy at this time too, so best to come early if you dont want to fight for a seat. There's also a yummy oyster bar to the right and a wine bar to the left (the selection is very good). Street level has something for the ladies: handbags, jewellery, shoes, lingerie (I've been pulled in all directions of this place). Then there's toys, travel goods and sportswear. Go up another level to find TV and electricals, furniture, bathroom accessories, soft furnishing, garden furniture, stationery and seasonal Christmas decorations. Even though I vastly prefer M&S, Waitrose and boutique shops over Tescos, the local branch is closer than everything else so sometimes convenience wins out. Usually the determination on whether or not to go into Tescos is pretty simple: Am I getting a mass produced thing in a can or a box? Tescos is fine. Otherwise, head elsewhere. The produce and meat here is definitely inferior to the nicer stores so you'll want to skip that entirely. Sometimes I can't be bothered so I'll get some meal deal thing here but make no mistake the sandwiches and wraps are several orders of magnitude inferior to M&S so you're going to get what you pay for; if you actually exit a store with "Korean BBQ wrap with cheddar and bacon" then you get what you deserve! I should add that the service at this Tescos is way, way better than some of the smaller stores.

The same reason - refrigeration out of order caused by flooding considering the area is 33 ft above sea level. and had no incidence of flooding previously. Last year in the middle of the pandemic we were there 15 mins queueing up to go in only to find lots of empty shelves. This afternoon we bought a pack of beef flank weighing 1300 gms only to find 435 gms (almost a third of the weight) of thick fat hidden under the leaner meat - was this on purpose ?

Luckily, a friend dragged me here last week and I finally got to play in the Chinese supermarket I'd heard so much about. It's fun here. There's stuff you won't ever have seen before (I lived in China for a while and I still didn't recognise some of the stuff). It's not easy that everything is sold in bulk. I ate pak choi for almost every meal over three days. But, it would be great if you were planning dinner for friends. I have a bamboo steamer now. Everyone is getting wontons whether they like them or not. I wasn't impressed with their Crispy duck - the carving was so bad that it was 30% bone which was annoying (and has probably cost them that final star actually). I'll try the char sui next time. I'm very excited about that. They stay open late on a Sunday too (illegal? maybe? leave them alone, please). It's not cheap here, but that's understandable. That's a bit like complaining that Cyber Candy is expensive. Besides I don't know many supermarkets that will sell me a lobster that's still swimming about in a tank.

The selection of produce for this size of shop is impressive and boasts a butchers and cold meat counter. If you buy more than £5 worth of produce, which let's face it isn't hard in Waitrose, you will get 2 hours free parking in the underground carpark, perfect as parking in Greenwich can be a major pain. Head on down for your free coffee (with a My Waitrose Card) and free parking. Visit the sights in Greenwich and maybe even pick up some necklaces from Greenwich Market, you know, each to their own... Owned by two of the most helpful and friendly grocers in London- Adrian and Jason- the shop sells high quality fresh fruit and vegetables on a seasonal basis. Everything is beautifully arranged- the presentation is immaculate, especially at Halloween and Christmas. My friends who live locally, will now not shop anywhere else. They even arrange weekly vegetable and fruit boxes through them. Last Summer I asked them to put together a small fruit platter for me- I only had 20 pounds- and they delivered the most enourmous, extravagant platter that few 20 people. I was so impressed- they put in beautiful apples, strawberries, pears, mango and melon- a lot of the money. They also stock an amazing selection of pickles, preserves and Chegworth Valley apple juices.
