It was much less that I had hoped for and even less for what I'd expected. In no particular order I will give details of the horrors you might expect. Keep in mind that for an older person with terminal issues this might have been much better, but I was probably the youngest in the facility and only needed P.T., not nursing. I had a multiple-occupancy room (read semi-private, two patients) that had a TV each but both TVs were controlled with the same coded remote. When I would turn mine off or on or changed the channel or volume level, his would change, too, and vice-versa. It had a bathroom much smaller that any Motel 6 I'd even been in. It had belt-sander quality toilet paper. And there was no shower... only a bi-weekly schedule to go down to the "spa" always with a nurse or assistant who did their best impression of Nurse Rachet (controlling the shower hose, freezing temps, dumping handfuls of shampoo on my hair, all while seated in one of their rolling PVC shower seats. I am not a xenophobe, but when all of the staff speaks loud Creole in your presence and only barely try to speak English when they address you, I find it disturbing and off-putting. The P.T. "gym" looked more like an adult kindergarten, including match-the-shape games. The silicone rubber bands they used for muscle-strengthening made me think that I was in Joe's Garage and Kindergarten. The staff seemed more interested in whistling to 80's tunes or talking about their next meal plans than focusing on the P.T. The entire facility reminded me of a stalog; it took the door code of the day to exit a door to the outside. This might be effective against dementia patients wandering off, but I was clearly with all of my senses and it would have been nice to sit for awhile outdoors listening to the quite sounds of traffic... It took the kitchen/nutrition staff 9 days to finally get my food orders correct. I make the majority of my meals fresh and raw. So instead of blindly opting in for the lemmings' fare of heated canned food, I spent entirely too much time getting them to make me salads and sandwiches. And why are we still wearing traditional hospital gowns? It made more sense back when most of our medicines were hypodermics in the buttocks, but they have got to go. They provide no protection, they never fit, and the ties get knotted up. My assigned doctor was on vacation when I was admitted and never returned during my 10-day visit. Their inter-departmental communications were horrible, with me often repeating the same set of information to many staff members who should have shared it. I hope this will guide you towards selecting a better nursing home/rehab experience than I had.

Our experience at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Naples was extremely disappointing…read moreand stressful during a time when our family should have been focused on healing and recovery. Rather than feeling like individualized, patient-centered rehabilitation, much of the stay felt like a box-checking exercise. We repeatedly encountered rushed interactions, poor communication, and a lack of attention to the patient's unique needs, goals, limitations, and pain levels. As family members advocating for our loved one, we often felt dismissed rather than listened to. There were ongoing concerns regarding delayed pain medication, inadequate overnight medication management, missing or delayed safety equipment, and charting that did not always accurately reflect what was actually happening. We also felt that important information provided by the family was not always taken seriously, despite our being actively involved in the patient's care and discharge planning. One of the most frustrating aspects was the perception that facility processes and discharge timelines sometimes seemed to take priority over the patient's actual condition and readiness. We frequently had to push for appropriate equipment, services, and accommodations that should have been part of a collaborative rehabilitation plan. The therapy itself had some bright spots, and there were individual staff members who genuinely cared and tried to help. Unfortunately, those positive interactions were overshadowed by larger issues with communication, responsiveness, and overall patient-centered care. Rehabilitation is about more than completing tasks and documenting progress--it is about listening to patients and families, treating them with dignity and respect, and creating a plan that truly supports recovery. Sadly, that was not our experience. I hope this feedback leads to meaningful improvements for future patients and families.

We spent a long time looking for the right place for her and were happy to have found this one. My Mom is 91 years old and has had frequent hospitalizations in the past 10 years and we are so grateful for the care and patience with which she has been treated for this extended period of time. She has several physical therapists and occupational therapists in both the Gardens as well as her apartment at Terracina Grand and they always work with her to build up her strength and get back to a normal way of life. She has been in a wheelchair ever since her stroke but there are always enough CNAs and Nurses who monitor her medication and get her to and from the bathroom, as well as work with her when she has problems swallowing. The food is very good particularly at the Gardens and even though it sometimes must be softened so that she can easily eat it, she is usually able to rehabilitate herself with the help of the wonderful people who attend her there. We couldn't be happier than to have a place such as The Gardens for Mom to recuperate in until she is strong enough to go back to a more independent lifestyle which is available at Terracina Grand.

While there have been brief moments of hope--occasional improvements and a few staff members who genuinely tried--those moments are quickly erased by the overwhelming neglect, lack of compassion, and sheer incompetence that defines this facility. Over the years, ownership has changed hands multiple times, and each time, I've met with the new administrators to express my growing concerns. And each time, I've been met with empty promises and no meaningful action. Nothing changes. If anything, it continues to decline. On June 7th, 2025, at approximately 11:30 AM, I walked into my mother's room to find her feeding tube machine blaring and flashing multiple error codes. No one was around. Not a single nurse or aide had responded. A male aide entered the room to check the other patient, who wasn't even there, and just before he walked out, he asked me if I needed help. I literally had to tell him that the feeding tube machine is malfunctioning and needs to be addressed. The head nurse came into the room, left, and didn't return for another 8-10 minutes. When she finally returned to fix the machine, I asked her if she knew how long the machine had been like this. She mumbled something under her mask and never even faced me. My mother, who has no mobility in her arms or legs, had also been lying there covered in her own urine and feces. Flies were buzzing around the room. It was like something out of a horror film. This isn't just unacceptable--it's inhumane. It's horrifying to think they aren't doing their job unless a family member raises concerns. Despite being completely bedridden, my requests to have her taken out of bed occasionally were ignored. When I insisted, I was told it's too difficult to move her, as if that justifies letting her sit for days in one position. As a result, she can develop bed sores, something that is completely preventable with proper care. She is always dehydrated. Every time I visit, I notice how dry her lips are, how low her fluid intake is, and how little urgency the staff shows about addressing it. I know she is on a feeding tube, but her oral fluid intake is nonexistent. Last month, my mother was discharged from the hospital and returned to Naples Health and Rehab, only to find that she had been kicked out of her room. No explanation, no preparation--just displaced. The family was never even notified, and when we visited her, we were told she had been moved to a different room. A dark, disgusting, and unsanitary room all the way in the back, down the hallway. As if she were a piece of furniture, not a human being. As if they were trying to hide her. Some specific points that anyone considering this facility needs to know: * The building is filthy. It smells like human waste. The walls, floors, and hallways are neglected. The presence of flies is a constant issue, which tells you everything you need to know about the sanitation here. * The staff is a mixed bag, at best. While a few seem to care, far too many are rude, dismissive, and incompetent. Some speak to family members with annoyance, as if doing their basic duties is a burden. * The food is horrible. (I know because my mother wasn't always on a feeding tube.) Naples Health and Rehab is not just mismanaged--it's dangerous. If you have a loved one who needs care, I urge you to look elsewhere. I wouldn't wish what we've gone through on anyone. No one deserves to be treated like this. They don't care about patients; they care about profits. The emotional toll this has taken on my family is immeasurable. I fear for my mother's health and well-being every single day. And I'm exhausted from fighting a system that seems designed to neglect the most vulnerable among us. My goal is to remove my mother from this facility. Your goal should be to never let your loved ones enter that place. Learn from our experience. Do not place your loved ones here.
