But i finally needed a change and searched online for the best reviews of local salons and chose Shear Design (despite the fact there are many salons in my small town including some upscale ones). I asked for an app't with a stylist who would listen to me and work with my needs. Jeanna was that person, an intelligent thoughtful young woman who spent over an hour and a half with me from consultation to final blow dry. She paid attention to the photos of cuts i brought, the shape of my face (round), my age (late 50's), the texture of my hair (thinning, course, prone to fuzzing out and losing its shape in humid conditions). She was able to take my suggestions and merge them with what would work for me. She showed me some great styling tips when i thought I knew them all! And I ended with a spectacular cut that is incredibly versatile (smooth or wavy) and easy to maintain. It was really put to the test yesterday in a big thunderstorm in which my head was drenched. I smoothed it back with my fingers and let it dry naturally. The hair formed itself beautifully into its naturally wavy state that looked just as good today with just a comb through it as it did yesterday. The cut wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny. I highly recommend this salon and Jeanna.

A Disappointing Experience…read more I don't usually leave negative reviews ( see my other reviews) but after spending $395 here -- and being treated the way I was -- I feel compelled to share my experience. For context, I have been living in the Berkshires all summer taking care of my 85-year-old father and my stepmother who has advanced dementia. The last time I did anything to my hair was over a year ago because one of my closest friends did my hair for over 20 years. & she recently passed away from a brain tumor. Booking an appointment was a very emotional ordeal. I went in with dark brown hair and I wanted golden blonde highlighted hair. I also asked for a trim, saying I wanted to keep as much length as possible. Instead, I left with hair that was still brown, with just a few subtle highlights. The stylist was a very sweet, young woman, but the end result was nothing like the inspiration photo I provided -- even after a consultation beforehand a week before the appointment. The stylist I saw consulted with another stylist there, and they were both kind and professional, and I don't blame them which is why I am omitting their names. I would even see them again if they worked somewhere else because the quality of their work was good. It just wasn't what I was going for. I thought maybe I hadn't made that clear even though I brought a photo of the color I wanted. I am the kind of person who will eat the wrong meal at a restaurant rather than complain. I reached out after the appointment to express that I wasn't happy with the results and would like to see if I could come back in. I was told via text to "come in Thursday and we'll fix it." But when I replied with my availability, I got no response. I followed up the next day and received a call from the owner, Caroline. Rather than offering a solution, she defended the work for 10-15 minutes and told me things like "look at the color outside," "we just don't know how the hair is going to lift until we get in there," and lastly, "the stylists you worked with are very pleased with the results." When I calmly expressed that I wasn't happy with the results and said that I felt unheard -- I believe I said I am now feeling a little "gaslit" -- the owner Caroline started yelling at me: "I AM NOT! THAT IS NOT WHAT IS HAPPENING! I FIND THAT VERY TRIGGERING!" I ended the call -- stunned and upset. This was meant to be a moment of long-overdue self-care during a very difficult year. Instead, I left feeling dismissed and disrespected. If you're looking for beauty and healing, proceed with caution -- especially if you're not 100% satisfied with the results.
