Top notch salon! The staff is very friendly and are very knowledgeable. The salon is well kept, and had a great ambiance. I've had my hair cut a few times at this location with it's newest employee Kaz, but I have been getting my hair cut by her for over a decade. Her attention to detail and her recommendations are what have kept me coming back for years. I don't think I've ever been unhappy with my haircut, even when I let her experiment with different styles! read more

The shop is small and neat, good for an after work or weekend hair cut. The quality is good. They know how to cut the hair and pay enough attention to your need. read more

I have been getting hair cut by Kira for over 10 years. I bought my 8 years old daughter to get hair cut done today. Since it was first time for my daughter to come to hair salon, she was very nervous and whining that she didn't want to cut her hair but Kira's professional work made my daughter soooo happy now she is asking when she can go back to salon again. Kira is truly professional. Thanks read more

The one and only, Masa is my go-to stylist for I don't know how many years, for someone like me who is super particular about her haircut. Unfortunately not many places meet my standards. Everyone has its unique hair which needs different approach and care, and as an Asian, my thick and stubborn hair would be a mess if cut poorly. Masa's magical hands just do the job every time I come here. I don't have to do anything in the morning, and I get so many compliments. If you want the best, this is the place. read more

I have been at this beauty salon last week. It is really a beauty salon. They made me feel great and Ellie made an excellent choice for my hair color. People at work are asking me where have I done my hair and I am proud to say" Just try Terra Hair Design." P.S. One more thing: While washing your hair, Ellie's head massage is divine! read more

Kira is fantastic! They have an automatic hair washing machine that is a must-try. There's limited parking right in front of the shop that makes it convenient. Very professional and great service. A bit pricey but i don't mind paying for quality. read more

Had a great time getting my hair done with Kaz! I've only had my hair professionally colored a couple times in the past, so I am relatively unfamiliar with the process. Kaz kindly went over the balayage process with me and made recommendations that would fit with my hair color and styling history. Kaz was super helpful and nice, and I'm enjoying the new style! read more

It's worth paying for... FO-SHO! I rarely get a haircut..more like once a year and when I do, it's usually drastic..so I want to go to a place where I'll be extremely satisfied. You have to book with Masa (owner). He is awesome and quite a conversationalist. He is very welcoming and so are his staff. They will take good care of you! Masa is amazing with the scissors. He has this belt of gadgets (I call it!) for cutting hair and he whips out each one like a super hero and does his *magic* on your hair. You may have to be patient, because he will take his time (~2 hours) perfecting every strand of your hair from one angle to another. BUT no worries.. all the waiting will pay off, because you will walk out of there feeling like a SUPERSTAR! no joke..I always do! I am currently growing out my hair again since I need a change..once I do..you know where I'll be to style it up! read more

The most expensive haircut of my life but worth it. I get my hair done by Kira and she is amazing--always able to gauge what kind of layers I need and is able to make my hair look thinner and sleeker simply through her cutting technique (I don't have to straighten my hair or do anything else to it!). I'm of the firm belief that a cut is only as good as the way it grows out and every time my hair is done by Kira, it's still looking wonderful months after. The last time I visited, Kira also highlighted my hair...the results looked better than I even hoped for! It really was perfect...the colors that they use are specifically for Asian hair so I recommend going to a place like Terra if you are Asian and want any sort of coloring done. Doing it yourself won't yield results that come even close. Other people have told me they don't like how Terra sometimes tries to push products on you...and if they know you're not from around San Diego and/or are not planning on being a regular, they won't treat you as well. The very first time I met Kira, she did ask me if I wanted products and also pressured me into making an appointment 2 months later (but I like my hair long and think for a haircut this expensive, I can only afford one every 4-6 months or so)...but now she only mentions products out of courtesy and doesn't pressure me to come see her more often than I need to. Although I haven't interacted much with the other stylists there, Kira really is one of the sweetest! Finally, as other reviewers have mentioned--you're not getting just a haircut when you come to Terra. Expect to be offered drinks and snacks, to be given a complimentary head-neck-shoulder massage, and to be PAMPERED. read more

I have gotten hair cuts from Kira for countless times, but my last haircut sometime last year I have not gone back. I went in for a usual cut, but came out with the shortest bangs i have ever had in my life. It took me forever to grow it out. Not only that, but the prices went up and they didn't even tell me ahead of time or update it on the website. All in all, this place is really expensive now, and judging from how my last hair cut I don't intend to go back just yet. That being said, Kira has cut my hair many times and usually does a wonderful job. But whatever it was on that last visit (bad hair AND an increase in price) didn't sit too well with me. I basically paid more to get a BAD haircut that day. Anyways, I would still check this place out. But only if you're willing to shell out a lot of cash and also very verbal on how you want your hair to be cut. read more

Great haircut in years! Somehow over years I was getting the same hair style even though was trying to change it few times. Got so many compliments how nice my haircut is! I like that I need to do very little to style it - hair falls into right place by itself. It is almost two and half months since haircut and the hair still looks good! Couldn't wait to get another one! read more

Masa did a wonderful job styling my hair. This salon is great and I highly recommend to anyone looking for a great hair stylist.

I'm really disappointed to be writing this review because initially my mom had some good experiences at this salon and everyone seemed nice but after a few days I'm still so upset with my hair and this salon. I had an appointment for roots/ color, once there began discussing with stylist that maybe partial highlights and a trim would work better. My mom asked for breakdown of price twice. I got the trim and color and stylist never answered about the price. I was not happy with the result as it's barely obvious that I got highlights, it's light/copper at top and barely obvious elsewhere, really strange. Plus, my grays are still Showing, and the stylist had no time to style/ properly blow dry my hair. The cut doesn't seem any different than a $50 cut I've gotten elsewhere. Come to find out He decided to charge 130 for my trim and 180 for the botched partial highlights?! Although my hair is thicker than most, charging over $300 for a few bad partial highlights and TRIM is outrageous and wrong. Given the fact that the result was clearly not what it was supposed to be, him charging that excessive amount without even offering to fix my hair or without giving an estimate of how much it was going to be was really messed up and unprofessional. read more

MASA is a GENIUS! What an amazing experience and worth every single penny!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE him! :) I should have posted this over a year ago but never late than never! And ever since Masa first laid his hands on my hair, I have not run out of compliments from complete strangers, friends and family from the styles to the color! I have been SINGING his PRAISES for 14 months! :))) MY VISITS: First visit was 6/2011 and he took my hair from blaaaaaah - medium length and boring to a shorter, "hell yea!" look - Shorter in the back with a bit more length in the front - a longer version of Victoria Beckham's style. Went back in Sept., asked to go shorter - which Masa is was nervous about (b/c he wanted to make sure I would be happy!) but he did it; we evened out the previous cut and shaped it up nicely w/new layers - I received so many compliments on the look! :) In January 2012 I went back again and told Masa I wanted to go even SHORTER. We came up with this bias cut w/long side bangs to the right and short in the back (think Rihanna's 'faux-hawk' but a bit longer) - it was ADORABLE! I felt like a brand new person walking out of the salon....but wait - there's MORE! In February 2012 I met up w/Masa and his team to be a hair model while he taught a class how to color hair using a "Starfish" technique. As usual, Masa was so friendly and gave my hair a new color that I LOVED! It went from a dark auburn brown to multi-highlights of carmel brown and blonde. Every time I moved my hair slightly it would reveal a new color - he is an ARTIST and true master of hair! WHAT TO EXPECT WHILE THERE: When I go for a style/cut/shampoo/etc, the staff is always very sweet, friendly and helpful. First Masa and I will chat about the look I would like and then I'm whisked away to the automatic hair washing machine. (Your hair will never be cleaner than this!) It's the perfect temperature, the water pressure and multiple streams of water makes it feels like a massage! Plus there is a head massage after the machine is done! Next up, I'm taken back over to Masa's chair and given a neck/shoulder massage and have your hair combed out by the assistants. Then Masa begins his MAGIC! He begins by cutting my hair wet, then blow dries and flat irons it, and then will cut it a SECOND time dry. THIS is when my jaw dropped the first time I watched him do this - the hair and his hands are moving so quickly that I was fascinated! Finally he will style it to perfection and you're walking out looking like a superstar! PS - this is a Japanese salon but there are all varieties/ethnicity of hair that patronize the salon - including this Siciliana! ;oP PPS - It wasn't until my 3rd visit that I finally saw the bathroom - I highly recommend you make a stop through - it's pretty kick ass. PPS - I've visited this salon at least 6-7 times total now and have only had to park on the street ONCE. Hopefully I haven't broken my streak! :-D read more

I had my hair cut this last Saturday. I had heard about the salon from a Japanese friend and was really intrigued. I had been in dire need of both a haircut and color as I had tried to do them myself at home. So I called and made an appointment. I was a little concerned at first because: (1) I am not Japanese and (2) my hair is naturally curly. But it sounded so different and cool, I set my worries aside. I was able to get an appointment several weeks later. Turns out they get booked up months in advance, so I figured I would be patient so that I could experience the wonderment of the amazing hair washing machine and the fantastic toilet that I had heard about. Day of my appointment: The building is actually pretty easy to find, as it is a stand-alone building with the name prominently displayed. It is located across the street from the Rolls Royce dealership in La Jolla. When I first pulled up, I was wondering, "Wow, how much is this really going to cost me???" I walked into a very clean, modern and trendy looking salon. There are huge mirrors at each booth, creating an illusion that the room is actually larger than it is. I was then immediately greeted by the receptionist, and I noticed that all the staff is Japanese and has great hair. That was the first good sign. I then met my stylist, Yohei. He was very thorough during the consultation, going into my hair texture, we discussed my expectations and how much time I wanted to put into maintenance, and also the shape of my head, and how to use styling tools to get the most out of your head shape. He was very easy to talk to and provided great feedback and responses to any question I had. Also, if you're concerned, everyone's English is fantastic! So then onto the chair massage, hair cleaning machine, and toilets! Wow... I don't even want to give away the cool details, I highly recommend experiencing them for yourself! All in all, it took about 3 hours to have my hair cut, colored, and flat ironed. I was very pleased at Yohei's thoroughness, patience, and attentiveness. He even convinced me to buy a $160 flat iron that worked amazingly when he used it, and my hair stayed bone straight for three days! I also made my next appointment - two months out. For all the services provided, I paid a very reasonable fee - Under $150! I highly recommend Terra Hair Design read more

For my four years attending UCSD and the next two years working in SD I never even thought about switching to another hair salon after getting recommended to Terra. For all my visits I have specified my stylist to be Kira. I would recommend her for female haircuts. They also do nails. And along with the haircut they will give you massage, snack, drink of your choice out of water, tea, coffee. Etc. the washing machine is phenomenal, if I were a millionaire I would have one at my place so I wouldn't have to wash my own hair... I've gotten a bunch of haircuts and coloring done. They turn out great always. The owner of this place, Masa-San is a professional beauty consultant and all the other employees here respect Masa greatly. I've lived half of my life in Japan and I have to admit Terra is better than any I found in Japan. If you ask for a haircut that grows quickly they can do it for you. If you want your hair dye to grow out slowly and become ombré they can do that for you too! If you do get coloring done, I recommend that you also purchase the shampoo and conditioner set that they offer. I like the pink rose scented one. Lastly, make sure you make an appointment beforehand! Parking spots are available up at the front (3 spots) or the residential area nearby. I've moved away from SD now but, considering driving back to Terra sometime just for a haircut...just cuz it's so worth it;) read more

BEST. HAIRCUT. EVER. Masa is truly an amazing hair stylist. I agree with Shayne C.- he's got some mad skills with his scissors. There's no question about it! Just watch how the stylists at Terra beautifies every one of their customers into superstars. Seriously! I've seen a variety of customers here, ranging from different ethnicities and age groups. And they all walk out FAB-ULOUS!! Plus, you get additional benefits of scalp/shoulder massage, automatic shampoo machine, and complimentary drinks and (sometimes) desserts that range from apple juice to red bean porridge. They really have the quality service down. In addition, their decor is quite stellar. Check out their bathroom that has automatic, warm toilet seats... It's all about end-to-end service at Terra. Their imported Japanese products are just as amazing. My hair color doesn't fade away as fast when I use their products. And Masa-san never pushes me to buy them, but just recommends them since he knows what's best for my hair. And he's quite right. They work wonders to my hair. Yay! It is indeed pricey but I have no regrets. I just love my hair since finding out about this absolute diamond in La Jolla. I just hope they don't raise their price anymore and keep the service top quality. If you decide to come here, be sure to make an appointment 2-3 weeks in advance and try to find parking on the street, because the private lot usually becomes full. read more

YOHEI is NUMBER 1 !!!!!!!! Why? 1) Active listener 2) Creative hair stylist 3) Detail oriented hair cuts 4) Perfectionist in cutting hair 5) Passionate about his job and fun to talk to. Its difficult to find a perfectionist who can work on my hair as I strive to find the perfect haircut to match my face. A lot of these hairstylists out there cut to rush, cut to slow, cut to much, cut to fancy or cut to mismatch their facial structure. Through my journey of searching for a hairstylist, I found Yohei through word of mouth on the streets of clairmont mesa. I am sure his known everywhere in San Diego, ca, mines particularly happened at ranch 99 while talking to a cashier. I gave it a shot and scheduled an appt. with Yohei and since then, 2010, I've been going to Yohei for my regular haicuts. THANK YOU YOHEI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Beverly B. read more

YOHEI IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i have been coming here since 2008, never strayed, never left. he is patient and gives me the best hair color EVER. I always get compliments from friends & family, it's a given. He is knowledgable and just knows me and my style. haha. My husband goes to him now too. Thank you Yohei for putting up with my high maintenance issues and the double shot espresso. :) Parking in the 3 spaces right in front of their building can be a problem. Make sure you leave yourself enough time to find parking just in case. Try not to park in the 1st left spot, it's a b*tch getting out b/c of the uneven curb. Enjoy being pampered at Terra Hair Design!!! read more

So it's been a whole week and it's official...I love my haircut. Thank you Lydia T for the recommendation and thank you Yohei for listening to my needs and bringing them to fruition. Yohei took the time to listen to exactly what I was looking for in a cut, and also explained to me the balyage process and the upkeep that is involved, I didn't realize it wasn't as low maintenance as I thought. I felt so well taken care of right from the beginning. Conversation with Yohei came really easy and I felt as if I'd been coming there for years. We spoke about everything, from Comic-Con to my favorite subject, FOOD! Terra has a hair washing machine from Japan, which I have to say is pretty neat and, to me, calming. There's also one of those crazy toilets that have all the fancy functions, I didn't need to use the bathroom long enough to experience them, but I will say the seat was nice and warm . I added added a conditioning treatment with my cut, which left my hair super soft and seemingly easier to manage all week. There is a steaming device that encases your entire head of hair, this is to help penetrate the treatment into each stand of hair...again, another interesting tool that adds to all around luxurious pampered feeling you get at Terra. To top off the treatment, I also received a take home supply to help keep my locks luscious for 4 more weeks. After all of this, I do have one complaint, and it is about the teeny tiny parking lot that is difficult to back up out of onto the busy street, but...an easy solution is to park ON the street, so, no biggie. Terra, Yohei...you have a new regular and I will spread the good word to anyone who asks. I totes adore you! read more

One of the things I'll miss about San Diego is Terra Hair Design. Kira is a wonderful stylist. I love the fact that she always listens to my concerns and gives me good advice as to what would look good with my face shape. I've been here three times over a span of 2 years and each time my hair cut came out to $90 with tip. It's the most expensive hair cut I've had in my life but SO WORTH IT! I only come here when I'm completely changing my hair style and need a good job done. I've only had compliments about my hair. The bonus is that my hair will grow out beautifully until I save up enough money to visit Kira again. Their staff is very accommodating and polite. I enjoy every moment of the automated hair washer which feels so heavenly. I also love it when they massage your shoulders and temples. Although Terra is on the expensive side, I would definitely recommend this place if you are going for a complete makeover or a dangerous cut that won't always turn out good. You'll need stylist like those at Terra! read more

I am so glad I found out the hair salon which provided Japanese quarity and technique. Yohei is an awesome stylist. Thank you!

Yes, this place is very pricey if you're just looking for a haircut. However, if you're looking for an experience, Terra Hair Design is a place you should give it a try. I'm rating it five star because I feel like the service, haircut, and experience was worth my money. My hair stylist is Kira and I've been letting her cut my hair for the past five years in San Diego. Unfortunately, I just had my last trip today because i'm moving away from San Diego in less than two weeks! (Which is why i'm finally giving this place a review) Each stylist offers a different price for your hair. If you get the owner (Masa) to cut your hair, you'll be paying much more than, let's say, someone new. The "oh so famous" hair washing machine is indeed quite awesome. The machine literally shampoos and washes your hair with a good amount of water pressure scanning through the surface of your head. They give you complimentary pastry made fresh everyday by owner's wife and I've always wondered why she doesn't open up her own pastry place. Because all the pastries I've had every time blows me away with joy. After your haircut, they put haircare/scalp treatment and massages your head, shoulder, upper back, for about five minutes. The workers there are often conversational and through time i was able to build a good friendship with my hair stylist. If you use hair spray to get a good hold on your hair, i recommend getting their hair spray. It's one of the best I've used and I need to make sure i stock up on it. Their shampoo is also great, however, considering the price it's hard to throw down money at it. I understand that it can be ridiculously pricey for a guy that gets haircut about every 4-5 weeks. But if you're a girl that gets a haircut twice a year, i think it's a considerable option to come to Terra Hair Design and at least give them a try. Make sure you make an appointment ahead of time (usually 2 weeks) Hope the review helps, David PS. Their bathroom is amazing too, just sayin' read more

This review is only for their appointment scheduling process as a new client. I called the studio twice and left a message the first time. I did not receive a call back despite leaving my details. I called a second time and no one answered so I hung up. I decided to email them and this is where the correspondence went sideways. My email provided my desired services and days available. The person who responded literally asked me a question and I responded to each question. They would respond back even to tell me blow by blow of what they were doing as well as asking me to confirm what services I wanted despite that info being in the email history. This emailing spanned over 9 emails before they could even provide me with a date and stylist. The availability they provided ended up being on a day I had specifically listed that I was unavailable (i was only unavailable 1.5 days out of a 7 days availability for the week). I wrote back and said the day they had available was on a day of the week I had already communicated that I couldn't be available and told them that there was no need to keep looking for a slot for me since this whole process was a bad experience. I didn't want to go through 9 emails of correspondence again before I got a time slot that wasn't on Tuesday morning or Wednesday. The person apologized back in email to tell me to tell me they are really busy and are just trying to fit me in. There are many ways to be efficient at scheduling such as reading the request and listing availability with preferences all in one email. This was overall amateur. If the front of the business is this bad, how is the rest of the business? I really wanted to get my hair done here and now I won't even try it out anymore because of this experience. There are plenty of great salons and independent hair professionals in San Diego and I'll try my luck there. read more

This review is really long overdue. I don't even live in San Diego anymore, but between 2008 and early 2012, I trusted all my hair needs to Yohei who is amazing! He's super nice and was the first hairstylist I went back to on a regular basis because every time I walked out of there I would get compliments. He understood my no-fuss, "easy care" style needs. He never pushed any products on me, though he did eventually convince me to use a flat iron every once in a while. It took three years, but I can now make my hair straight without burning my ears. The visits were always a lovely experience. If I had a wait a few minutes while he was finishing up, the staff would make sure I had magazines and some refreshments (usually tea). The visit starts with the amazing shampoo machine that shoots jets of pressured water. It may be odd the first time, but it was definitely a treat every haircut after. The place is high-end so expect to pay up. For me, the visits were worth every penny and one of the things I miss about home. I haven't had my hair cut in more than 2 months because I dread having to find a new stylist. They may never understand how truly lazy I am about hair the way that Yohei did. read more

Love love love this place! The hair stylists are amazing, Masa is a god send and I always receive compliments after a hair treatment with him. Irina is the cosmetologist at this salon and she saved my skin, I used to have horrible cystic acne and now I don't even need to wear face makeup! She was so helpful from holding my hand and taking her time with each chemical peel and recommending products that have kept my skin fantastic!
