Ah, but go when it's quiet and not only will the service be friendly and attentive, the food will sparkle taste buds and fill the belly. We went for dinner at around 6:30 and an early crowd was on its way out. Our timing was just right. Our drinks and food came promptly. But shortly after our entrees arrived, 3 different families came in one after another in parties of 8, 4, and 4, and they all ordered alcohol, i think margaritas because the guy who had taken our order was no sooner behind the bar filling out drink orders. There was only one other server. But the drinks... Yes to the margarita. Delicious and fresh, not with artificial sour mix but with real citrus. I had lemonade, which was fresh and not too sweet. And the food... yum. The salsa has a little smokiness (chipotle?) which made the chips go down way too fast. I ordered a vegetarian molcajete, a hot mortar bowl filled with rice, beans, and vegetables. I took the leftovers home and had the rest for lunch the next day. It was too big for me to finish at dinner after having the best tostones I think I've ever had at a restaurant. The tostones were perfectly crunchy on the outside and served over a pad of guacamole. The only thing i didn't like about the food were the flour tortillas, which i mostly didn't eat. I react to xanthan gum and guar gum and hence aware when foods contain them. These tortillas were too stretchy to not have one of these additives. But it's hard to get flour tortillas these days without it. (They do exist!) We will definitely be back. I hope they figure out the serving staff situation soon. I would be perfectly happy eating there if we had to order at the counter.

Sometimes restaurants here can get tired of their own customers during the summer tourist season (if you've ever been to a restaurant here on a Friday or Saturday night in the summer you know!), but not so at Agaves. Within a few seconds of seating ourselves, the waiter brought chips and salsa to our table and then came back a minute or two later and took our drink order. The indoor dining space is nice, bright, and clean. The salsa was fresh. The drinks came out really quickly and the man serving us was very good--he didn't need to write down our orders and even remembered the changes we made. I had fajitas and my husband had two taco entrees. It was a generous amount of food and very delicious! The place had a very welcoming vibe. We will definitely return!

Not too salty or acidic, but rather, savory, rich and creamy, and a veritable meal unto itself. I got three tacos with shrimp, carne, and fried cod. Super high quality ingredients. The carne was a little dry but easily remedied with the green tomato salsa. The food at the other tables was equally impressive. Especially the grilled octopus. I saw many remnants from Hanks, the previous restaurant, but it was lighter and more colorful and festive, with hanging banners, and friendly upbeat bar tenders and hosts, who were genuinely hospitable and attentive. I think what I can't get over is the prices of the food and how it was just ok. Not bad, but not excellent. Some stuff I get if it's a little on the pricey side. If you're serving up a homemade mole that took hours to make I get it, but some other stuff, like the carnitas taquitos (they had another name I can't remember) 18 bucks for 5 of em with rice and beans, yikes! I think the plus side though is that they tasted very fresh, these beans didn't come out of a can so I appreciated that. We ordered aguas frescas and they were not authentic. It was pretty much a concentrated syrup that you add water to. There was some stuff on the menu where I couldn't believe the price point, 13 bucks for some chips with guac, why? Service was ok, it just seemed like the waiter's mind was elsewhere. Again, not bad, but not amazing, expect it to be a pricey bill.
