Stopped by on my way home from Lime Rock Park (to Kingston) to quell hunger pangs. Very nice burrito, clean (but small) sitdown and takeout hole in the wall. It's located on the back side of the plaza, so you need to drive around and park on the east side. Lots of choices, freshly made. I had a Michoacan burrito with Al Pastor and french fries. A bargain at $10 total, including a can of (american) soda.

Authentic flavor, nice salsa but very small portions for a Mexican place. Misses the wow, that was awesome factor.

Lava burrito. Description on menu says covered in lots of cheese. You can be the judge.

We placed a pickup order and everything was still hot when we got home, which made it even better. My all-time favorite is the enchiladas de mole with chicken. They're packed with flavor and include peppers and onions inside, and come with a side of rice and beans that completes the meal perfectly. Highly recommend Casa Amigos when you're in the mood for great Mexican food!

Upon arrival it was clear that a vast swath of the county also decided that May 5 would be a good day to frequent a Mexican restaurant. In short, it was packed. I've never seen it this busy! That both dining rooms and the outside seating were full shouldn't have been a surprise. After a 3-minute wait, we were seated! Live music, people everywhere, and wait staff zipping thru crowds. Thankfully they've adjusted their prices upwards; previously I thought the food was seriously underpriced. The new pricing model reflects the breadth and depth of the new, substantive menu. The food took a long time to arrive but thankfully was preceded by a margarita that packed a punch even though I ordered the 'small' margarita with mezcal. Food quality was very good and I will return. I don't recall exactly what I ordered but can tell you the shrimp ceviche was great as was any dish with the shredded chicken. All in, this was a two-hour engagement excluding drive time. Timing was exacerbated by the fact that it was May 5th at a Mexican restaurant. I'd certainly recommend Casa Amigos if you're looking for an interesting change.

The space is beautiful, ingredients are all fresh and outstanding, and there's clearly a love for the spot from everyone working at Casa Susanna. The cocktail menu is unique and fun. Yes you could get a margarita, but everything on the menu is so interesting from Raicilla drinks to Carajillos, there's so much to love. The space feels like a film set and you need to make sure you get a reservation so you can enjoy rather than sitting outside or at the bar. Surprisingly reservations were harder to come by than expected the weekend I was there. The dishes are all great, with the Duck being my standout dish, just perfectly cooked and really exemplifying the beauty of Hudson Valley + Mexican cuisine. The tetela was also a real standout despite the simplicity of the dish. It leaned into good mexican food, withou ttrying to do too much. Each and every cocktail was fun and good! We'll be back, but not too often. The prices are high, and match the quality of the ingredients, but at $100 a person or more, it was not cheap.

Since they are already finalists, according to James Beard, I'll spend this review explaining more…read morewhy I only gave it three stars. The food in general was well prepared, delicious and certainly had a sophisticated knowledge of spicing in flavoring. But it's more the minor details that stops an experience from being a really wonderful one. So here are some details, you may think I'm crazy or you may relate. The first was coffee: they didn't have decaf and they don't have half-and-half. I'm not going to speculate why, but for quite a few of us decaf is a true pleasure and it'd be nice to have that available. To the waitresses credit she offered to bring me milk and cream, so I could make my own half-and-half? That was a first! The second was the hot chocolate: the actual hot chocolate was quite delicious, Mexican style with some cinnamon. But it was topped with a mountain of whipped cream and some small crunchy pieces. I think it's pretty standard nowadays that when you're going to top a drink like that the staff tends to ask whether you like whipped cream or not. I really dislike whipped cream so had to scoop all that stuff off. The next one was just simply funny: when you're ordering a side order of eggs, one option they list on the menu is a sunny side up egg, one of the other options is to have a "fried egg". I asked the waitress what exactly a fried egg was, she didn't know. She asked the chef, and apparently they didn't know either. So I ordered it over easy, hoping that was doable, but I just got a sunny side up egg instead. And lastly, was the ambience: the space is quite nice and comfortable, but if you're sitting in the outer ring near the windows and it's a very cold winter day (which it was when we ate) expect to be cold in there. They kindly offered to hang our coats, but I had to keep mine on the whole time. Maybe if the insulation and heating system is unable to keep up, you bring in a couple space heaters for the day?

Imagine our surprise that our intended eatery was closed (not that their website stated it) and our second choice was closing for the night (at 8 pm on a Saturday night!) Hugely disappointed, we stopped at the only place along our home area of Route 52 that had lights on. Not only were they opened, but enthusiastically greeted us and promptly brought over menus. The high top tables were excellent for our family member with the cane and the other (me) with a broken leg. The place was decorated for the season, and combined with the colorful Mexican decor was especially festive. We are all a little picky about our drinks, but the bartender happily filled our requests without hesitation. An excellent espresso martini was enjoyed, actually two, by me, and my family loved their drinks as well. We settled on the sampler platter which our waitress assured us would be plenty. She could have easily pressured us to order more, but was honest, professional, polite and friendly. We also enjoyed the chips and salsa. Highly recommend you stopping in, whether it's family dinner or casual date night. PS: it's a a fun family joke that I HATE when servers use the term "No problem". I mean; why WOULD asking for a glass of water be a problem? Our fabulous server frequently acknowledged our requests without hesitation and a cheerful "Of Course!" It left me giddy

Ah, but go when it's quiet and not only will the service be friendly and attentive, the food will sparkle taste buds and fill the belly. We went for dinner at around 6:30 and an early crowd was on its way out. Our timing was just right. Our drinks and food came promptly. But shortly after our entrees arrived, 3 different families came in one after another in parties of 8, 4, and 4, and they all ordered alcohol, i think margaritas because the guy who had taken our order was no sooner behind the bar filling out drink orders. There was only one other server. But the drinks... Yes to the margarita. Delicious and fresh, not with artificial sour mix but with real citrus. I had lemonade, which was fresh and not too sweet. And the food... yum. The salsa has a little smokiness (chipotle?) which made the chips go down way too fast. I ordered a vegetarian molcajete, a hot mortar bowl filled with rice, beans, and vegetables. I took the leftovers home and had the rest for lunch the next day. It was too big for me to finish at dinner after having the best tostones I think I've ever had at a restaurant. The tostones were perfectly crunchy on the outside and served over a pad of guacamole. The only thing i didn't like about the food were the flour tortillas, which i mostly didn't eat. I react to xanthan gum and guar gum and hence aware when foods contain them. These tortillas were too stretchy to not have one of these additives. But it's hard to get flour tortillas these days without it. (They do exist!) We will definitely be back. I hope they figure out the serving staff situation soon. I would be perfectly happy eating there if we had to order at the counter.

Good Mexican in Canaan? Who would've thought? We are huge fans of birria and it seems hard to find around this area, but Picante's has it! It even comes with the consommé! The birria quesadilla and birria burrito is now our top choice on their menu, along with the fresh guacamole. We also love the spicy (salsa??) they add with every meal also, definitely gives a nice kick when you need it! Everyone is so nice when you call and they always get our order right which is great because it's not always the cheapest option, but it's definitely worth the price. We will definitely be coming around more often!
