The service wasn't awful but she had gotten my order wrong multiple times. The food was fine. The gyoza and the fried rice were good, but I would stay far away from the sushi. Tenkaichi Sushi And Noodle Bar is a pretty impressive achievement. It's a restaurant that is broadly loved by everybody! In fact, I don't think I've met a single person who doesn't adore the place. That's some record! I think what we all love about it is that the standards are high and the prices are low. Sushi Nigiri averages around £2.30 for two pieces and Sushi Maki is generally below £4.00 for four pieces, with the rolls averaging around the £3.50 mark. A ten piece platter of mixed Nigiri Sushi costs £10.30. If I eat at Tenkaichi, me and my friends always order Sushi, despite there being plenty more options on the menu. I won't list them here as I know that other reviewers have made mention of them already. I remember when this place first opened - a friend of mine worked a sales executive for a radio station selling air time and this was one of here clients. So to show a bit of support a few of us went along and I don't know why but I wasn't expecting much - of course i was wrong (probably the 1st time ever!). The food is plentiful and very tasty indeed. I say plentiful but its still one of those places where you feel you could have eaten a lot more. It's also one of those places where you feel like approaching the chef and saying - how did you make this? One of those experiences that changes your perception of food. The first time I went here it was mind altering in the sense that I really enjoyed the raw fish which a lot of people still have issue with. Ask sushi restaurants go, prices are at a good low level and the only way you could get better is to compromise on quality and taste and go to an all you can eat buffet restaurant. I wouldn't choose to go here for noodles as I generally wouldn't eat noodles in a restaurant. If you want a real authentic tasting sushi experience Tenkaichi provides a great menu to choose from. Open every day for lunch and dinner, this hard-working Japanese restaurant deserves every ounce of the success it has. The food here is delicious, colourful, and relatively nutritious, while the setting is fairly simple, clean and informal - with long tables and benches often shared with neighbouring groups. On the menu there's a choice of authentic Bento Boxes, Ramen, Yakisoba-udon, Sashimi, Rice-Gohan and various salads and side dishes - pretty much everything you'd expect from a Japanese restaurant in the UK. With Bento Boxes from about £10 upwards, and Ramen from about £7, it's very reasonably priced as Japanese restaurants go. The only thing they don't do well is desserts - but that's a common theme across all Japanese restaurants I've been to in the UK - with Tenkaichi offering just one choice: a Japanese red bean pancake roll served with a plum sauce. I loved this place - in fact I'd go as far to say I liked their noodles more than I liked Wagamama's! There I said it - controversial! It has that small business feel to it where the owners really care about your experience here - they want you to have a nice time - they give very good service and want you to have a nice meal. It means a lot to them. This just has to be my favourite Japanese place in all of Cardiff. The menu is vast and offers something for even the pickiest of eaters. It's tiny and usually packed full of people so if it's a Friday or Saturday night probably best to phone in advance to avoid disappointment. There is a rich menu of noodles, sushi and rice dishes but I inevitably always opt for a bento box. For under £12 you can get a choice meat, fish or Veg fried or otherwise served with miso soup, salad, a few pieces of sushi, dumplings and a mound of steamed rice. It's really filling but doesn't make you feel lethargic, just satisfied. I'd probably have one every day if it wasn't so far from my house. read more

I agree wholeheartedly with everything that Tiffany has said. It is absolutely delicious in every way. It does tend to be fairly busy (though not as crazy) on weekdays too. I would be prepared for a short wait if you go without calling in advance, though it doesn't seem to take long for you to be seated anyway. £12 is so reasonable for good good sushi. Don't be sucked into the lure of cheap prices from other sushi restaurants. Please, pay a little more (even if it's just as a treat every once in a while) and get some real sushi. The reason I wouldnt award it higher marks is that it doesn't cater to vegetarians very much with only about 2 or 3 meal options and a few gyoza style items. Fantastic Japenese Sushi and Noodle bar with a really extensive menu. On the busy stretch of City Road, Tenkaichi is always busy, opening until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays it's a great place to go for late evening eating. Sliding onto one of the long bench tables you can chat to your neighbours or watch the bustle of the street outside. When I first ate here I initially stuck to noodles which are a favourite of mine however recently I've tried the bento boxes which are excellent - around £10 they are great value for money and a brilliant way to sample lots of bits of the menu. Sushi is always fantastic, really fresh and tasty. I've been in on lunch times with a really large party and the service was still fantastic and everyone really enjoyed themselves. If you prefer to sit in booths or at your own table you could try the more recently opened Ichiban on Albany Road which is also great - however I love sitting alongside strangers and listening in to their conversations!! After reading a few reviews on qype I was really excited about eating here. The staff are helpful and I loved the feel of the place, even sitting on the long benches didn't cause as much distress as I thought it would be. Sitting next to strangers 'n all that :p The food was tasty, but I think I made a wrong choice which spicy chicken ramen as it didn't mix too well with the already large amounts of alcohol I'd consumed that day. When I eat here again, which I will, I'll opt for a more solid based meal such as an udon dish, one of the parties had it and it did look scrummy. There were 5 of us in total, and the bill was reasonable as we ordered quite a bit of food and a few beers. Think it came to £70 in total. For the time being I'm awarding Tenkaichi 3 stars, although I know it probably deserves more. I'll update my review after my 2nd visit. read more

My favourite place to eat in Cardiff. Cheap noodles and sushi. Popular with students and everyone else. A welcome relief from the surfeit of Chinese takeways, kebab shops, KFC clones and Indian restaurants in City Road. Try it and enjoy some (reasonably) healthy food! read more

Tenkaichi's a proper shuffle into the benches noodle bar style of a place, with cheerful staff and a lively atmosphere; if you're of an age where you're game for clambering into your seat and talking over the crowd during the busier hours you'll love the place, but it's not quite appropriate for a sedate dinner. The food is top notch, too - for the last three years I've been a regular I've never been let down by the quality of the fish in the sushi and sashimi, the donburis are delicious and saucy and ramen comes by the gallon with rich broth and fresh toppings. Not quite the best Japanese food in the world, but edging out as the best in Cardiff and brilliant for a lunch or dinner. read more

Not a bad little Japanese restaurant. My daughter and I ate there this evening. We started with vegetable gyoza, which is like a deep fried dumpling. It was a nice starter before my tempura udon, which is a noodle soup, fat noodles and some breaded prawns which I slid into the bowl and enjoyed. She had miso ramen with chicken. All was quite enjoyable. I am a sushi lover but with the terrible, cold weather, I opted for something warm. The maki and sushi did look really good though and was tempted to order some too but the rest of the meal was very filling. read more

I have never really been much of a sushi and sashimi fan until I came to Tenkaichi and started slow with a sample box with a verity of different dishes, and to my surprise I actually found raw fish tasty! It's a brilliant experience realising sushi isn't all that bad but for those of you who still aren't sure on the whole raw fish thing Tenkaichi offers a selection of noodles, chicken and salads! Tenkaichi is my go-to place for Japanese food in Cardiff! A cosy place on City road (the end closest to Albany road), it's usually quite busy in the evenings so booking is recommended, though if you walk in before 6:30pm you should be fine. Seating is arranged in long benches but there's enough space that you won't feel as though you're intruding on the conversation of the party next to you. My usual: spider maki, rainbow roll and the unagi (eel) nigiri! Donburi rice bowls are also good. read more

Many have tried to imitate, never bettered! Fantastic Japanese Sushi and Noodle bar! The menu is vast and the only problem I have is choosing something different as I know the dishes I've tried in the past, I want to have again! Situated at the top end of City Road, Tenkaichi is one of those places that is always bustling. I've never had a problem getting a table. most of the time if they are busy, we arrange a time to go back and go for a drink nearby. You will either be placed at one of the long bench tables or be placed at the large window watching the world go by. For some, sitting so close to your neighbours may take some getting used to, but it's actually a really good dining experience. We've been coming to Tenkaichi since they opened 5-6 years ago. I'm a big lover of sushi, sashimi and the Bento boxes. If you're unsure about something, just ask! I love the Mixed Nigiri sushi - mixed sushi differently topped and very tasty or Mixed Sashimi, different bites of fresh, sliced fish. Bento boxes are an excellent way of trying a little bit of everything and come in meat, fish or vegetarian varities. I've also ordered from them for my lunch which is a fantastic change from a sandwich or a usual lunch. My recommendations too? Definitely have the hot sake which is a firm favourite and the Green Tea ice cream. read more

It's great to sit in the window of Tenkaichi and watch the hustle and bustle of City Road pass you by. I'm a great fan of noodles, and would choose this place over Wagamama any day of the week. You still have the same canteen-style service, but Tenkaichi feels much more authentic. It's always busy a testament to the great food they serve. I'm not a huge fan of raw fish, but there's still plenty on the menu to keep me happy. I love the vegetarian California rolls, and the Hoso Maki, which is 12 assorted vegetarian rolls for £5.75 is great value for money. read more

This is the best sushi place I have been in Cardiff Hands down. However there are 3 aspects which really disappoint me with this restaurant. 1) The not so friendly waitress, rarely smile, can be rude when ordering, look like they are about to have a nervous breakdown. 2) The length of time from ordering to actually getting your food, yes I know it is made fresh but once I and other people in my party had to wait 35 minutes for their dish. 3) This is my biggest problem , as the restaurant does occasionally become busy you can book a reservation online. However if your party is 6 or more they add on a service charge which is 10% of the bill. This has varied a few times as we were still given a service charge once we booked for 5 people. This is extremely annoying as a general rule for myself , when i received good service I do tip as a result, being forced to pay for not so adequate service makes me not want to visit Tenkaichi in the future. read more

truly frightening. I normally do not write reviews of restaurants but what they did to me has driven me to write this. I have eaten in this place a number of times and its been ok.however on this occasion I received the worst case of food poisoning I have had from any restaurant I have eaten in. I am talking about stomach cramps, headaches, the sweats, I'm about to pass out food poisoning.the service was indifferent and slow I expected that because of the time I went to eat.the food I ordered was nothing special the kind of stuff you'd expect from any chain of oriental restaurant.what I did not expect was the level of food poisoning I got. The service was ok but not knowledgeable and I had to ask for more tea even though I'd been there about an hour. I got my miso and main meal at the same time, which really shouldn't happen. The unagi was good but the rolls were just bathed in mayonnaise- like legit I think they thought mayo was the only thing holding the rice together. Sorry to rain on this parade, but I was not very impressed with Tenkaichi. The rice didn't seem like proper sushi rice, the maki rolls weren't that well made, as they all started unrolling before I even touched them. On the other hand though the prices were pretty fair and the place itself was quite nice enough, the staff was nice and the porcelain service looked good and the atmosphere was good and also the menu was varied. Was my 1st time in Cardiff, and from the other reviews it seems like it's the best sushi place there, so I guess if you find yourself in Cardiff and are in the mood for sushi give Tenkaichi a try. read more

Tenkaichi is an excellent restaurant and great for either lunch or dinner. It may take a minute to get used to rubbing up against some stranger thanks to the canteen style bench seating but it all adds to the fun. The food is delicious and not at all pricey (generally £3-7 for most things although about £11 for the priciest). They also do a substantial discount if you go at lunchtime. So much better than all the chain style fast-foody japanese places (yo, zushi, wagamamas). Excellent. read more

Tenkaichi is a popular sushi and noodle restaurant on City Road, standing out amongst the fried chicken and kebab shops that dominate the area! Unfortunately its popularity can be a downside as I have found the service to be slow on a couple of occasions. Once you have your food though it is delicious, the menu manages to cater for a variety of tastes and certainly encourages me to keep going back to try something different. The communal bench-style seating may not be everyone's favourite but it does make good use of the space and you soon get used to it. I'd definitely recommend booking, especially at the weekend. read more

I'm From France, and I used to eat a lot of sushi there, I'm a sushi/maki fan. I went there since I saw the good review on Yelp. Well, it's okay, but the sushis were not really good. I felt like the fish wasn't fresh at all, and tasteless (sorry).They didn't even look as on the menu at all (I mean, not at all, I even wondered if there has been a mistake on my order but no) I was a little disappointed. The miso soup and edamame were very nice. The staff was a little bit rude, so basically, I might come back to try something else, since it has good reviews, so I must have missed something, but not for the sushis. read more

been a regular at this place for several years, only really realise how good it is when you try the competition. outstanding and as far as i can tell authentic (bit of an amateur chef and can do many japanese dushes), recently tried wagamama in the bay, not even in the same league tasted postively pre-fab fast food by comparison. have been known to drive 10 miles from home to pick up a takeaway ordered over the phone (expensive takeaway though as not cheaper than restaurant prices). but otherwise outstanding, (did i say that already) read more

Got to be honest here, friendly, polite & helpful is not how I would describe the staff. May be I have been unlucky. I have been eating here fairly regularly over the last 10 years and if you asked me a year or 2 ago I would have agreed with the statements on here. It was definitely in my top 5 places to eat. However that said I am probably never going to eat there again since visiting the other day. Reason: I forgave them for employing the most miserable waitress in the world 6 months or so ago (not there any more i think) and the fact the seats are the most uncomfortable restaurant seats I have ever had the displeasure of sitting on (people 5'11'' + will know what I mean) but the last straw came when they served me what is described as "fresh orange juice" on the menu and it was obviously Tesco value or worse! (at like £3.50 - £4.00 a glass) I spent about £30/£40 in there on loads of food but that REALLY annoyed me. It just wacks of they don't care. Besides they know they will be rammed all the time so if I don't come back they ain't bothered. WAGAMAMA Cardiff Library beats these lot hands down. Sorry Tenkaichi you got to up your game BIG style now you got some competition. Hope you do and I can return as a customer. read more
