Noodlebox - Beef teriyaki with ramen noodles from Noodlebox

I have noticed the distinct flash of lime green shop front of Noodlebox for a good few weeks now…read more It is more noticable when I am on my way to Cafe 37 further on down the road for a not-so-healthy serving of burger and chips swimming in catering sauce, rather than choosing the healthier stirfry option that Noodlebox advertises. I have also noticed that Noodlebox deliver, so I thought that I might try them out when working one of my evening shifts. I googled and downloaded the Noodlebox .pdf menu which like the website sports a clean, simple design and is easy to navigate. As the ordering process goes, it sits in the same camp as Nando's or Wok to Walk where you are instructed in '3 easy steps' on how to order. Starting with the type of of noodle you would like, you then choose what type of box you would like for your main course. Options range from a noodle box to a veggie box, or you may instead prefer the salad box or the sushi box. Other boxes include the rice box, the soup box and lastly the ninja box, the box for the kids. Finally choose your side order and drink. Side orders are basically dips and drinks range from soft drinks to squeezed juices and beer. My review is based on the takewaway and delivery service so I can't comment on the accommodation or service within the restaurant itself. However upon phoning for my order I was greeted by a polite and friendly young voice and was told that the minimum order for a delivery was £10, however they had a meal deal for £9 which included a main, a side and a drink with a delivery charge on top for something like £1.50. I opted for that and ordered Ramen Noodles with a Teriyaki Box, Chicken Katsu Skewers and a Passion Fruit, Orange & Apple juice. It arrived within 30mins as I am based just around the corner, delivered on the back of a lime green Noodlebox logo'd scooter. As the name Noodlebox implies, the food [even the drink] all arrived in boxes with a dipping sauce and loyalty card on which you get a stamp for each order you place. 9 stamps gets you 1 free order, so in my case, spend £90+ and get a freebie. Not really a massive incentive but better than nothing. After opening the boxes and trying the rather nice refreshing juice drink, I realised that they had not supplied me with any chopsticks to eat the noodles with. This was my one slight niggle as I was eating at my desk in work and a pair of chopsticks would have proved very handy. I found a fork in my stationery pen pot so it was no big deal in the end. The food itself was nice. I had to remind myself that this was a takeway so the veggies would have softened in transit within a steamy cardboard box. I imagine the food would be much fresher when dining in. I do like to my vegetables to be crunchy in a stir fry, maybe more than an average pallette so I guess I am being slightly petty in this respect. The flavours of the ingredients were distinct, although the teriyaki flavour did not shine through and perhaps overall the box could have been slightly spicier from what I was expecting from the chilli symbol on the menu. However, there were generous amounts veggies, especially ginger which gave the food that distinct and tasty stirfry tang and bite. As for value, I am not sure how I ultimately felt about paying £10.50 for a stirfry, 2 peices of chicken in breadcrumbs and a fruit juice. Of course I could have made the same dish cheaper at home and in some respects just as nice. However, the point I have to remember is that I was not at home, I was at work without food, and Noodlebox could provide me with food, so at the end of the day I was a slave to the classic law of supply and demand. I also have to remember that the quality of the ingredients were very good, especially the squeezed fruit juice. Noodlebox advertise that they source all their ingredients locally, that their health conscious menu includes 97% fat free boxes with gluten free and tofu options and they never use MSG. If I never have the luxury of ordering a takeout from Noodlebox again, I will definitely visit there and eat in.

A THOUSAND TIMES YES! OH NOODLEBOX! NOODLEBOX!! NOOOOOOOOOOODLEBOX! YESSSS! Ok. Finished. In a review I wrote maybe two or three weeks ago, I lamented the fact that we don't get Chinese or Thai food in cool little boxes like the American swines do across the pond. Instead, we have to suffer our little tinfoil trays like the proles we are, never reaching the heights of culinary tupperware that our Yank compatriots get to scale. Well no longer! Noodlebox has arrived, and with them they bring noodle-boxy salvation! The menu is actually fantastically laid out, in that crisp, eminently fashionable way that only Chinese and Japanese restaurants seem capable of pulling off. You choose your noodles. You choose your meat. You choose your extras. They cram it in a box and laugh as you nip at it ineffectually with chopsticks. The food is delicious, and the aforementioned deals they do mean it doesn't have to be too expensive.

I had a gorgeous lemon chicken dish from there the other day while also trying to steal a fair bit of my other-halves noodles. Bit disappointed that they don't do more variety in their set menu's because I'd really like to try out a whole lot more but i like that they do a special kids dish. Delivery time was reasonable, without the hour of ordering and i've also been in there to pick up food and love its modern, clean feel.

I LOVE CHINESE FOOD!!!…read more So when somebody tells me there is a Chinese restaurant that exists in Cardiff that I haven't tried I hot foot it over there pronto (I don't know the Chinese word for pronto). I have to say I wasn't disappointed with Wok2Go - they cook it freshly for you, pretty much in front of you, so there maybe a bit of a wait but isn't that the case with all Chinese restaurants. But unlike some Chinese restaurants - its tastes fresh and they don't add MSG. They also have a Wok2Go express which is a nice little system where you pick you meal with 3 easy options. You choose a favourite base (rice or noodles) choose a meat dish (or a veg dish) and then choose a flavour e.g black bean or sweet sour etc I'd recommend this place if you like Chinese food, if you don't then what's wrong with you?

As a Californian Chinese person who grew up on hot pot, the opening of the brand new Hotpot Spot…read morewas like a godsend. We made a booking, walked in, and when the hostess asked me if I had any questions, I proudly puffed out my chest and said "no". Because. I. Freaking. Love. Hot Pot. If you've never had hotpot before and you're looking to experience more aspects of Chinese cuisine, please don't be put off but the idea of needing to cook your own food. It is one of the best dining experiences EVER. HOW IT WORKS: STEP 1: Walk in, and request your broth. I recommend Szechuan spicy which actually isn't that spicy and you can pump up the heat if you so desired. For those in your group who are a bit more afraid of spice, you can get half-and-half where the broth is split between soothing vegetable or spicy. But please do try the spicy, as you can adjust the level between 1-5. STEP 2: Order your fresh ingredients to put into the broth. Get PLENTY of meat, I recommend lamb and beef. Cut ribbon thin so it cooks within seconds and soaks up the heavenly broth. For noodles, the knife-shaved noodles are great. STEP 3: Make a dipping sauce. You can experiment with what you like. I highly recommend trying traditional Chinese BBQ (Sha Cha) sauce. This is the bit that might put off newcomers, though I'm sure any employee there would be happy to design a sauce for you. STEP 4: Put ingredients into the broth step-by-step. You don't need to be a professional chef to do this, just a general idea of how long it takes ingredients to cook. For example, put potatoes in at the start to let it stew. Because the meat is cut so thin, I don't even leave it in there as it will take literally seconds to cook to perfection. STEP 5: Enjoy! --- Hot pot is one of the most wonderful dining experiences ever. Not just for the food, but the community of it where your group is just around a big pot of delicious soup. Oh, and the best part, drink the soup at the end after it's had all of the lovely flavours from your ingredients infused!

Now, I'm a massive sushi lover... whether it be traditional nigiri or the modern maki, I'm a seasoned fan (especially from growing up in SF, where not liking sushi is a form of blasphemy). Yakitori #1 definitely scratched my sushi-itch. ~ Customer Service: Where it ranks down for me - not with the waiting staff, they were lovely. But my food came way before my partner's. I initially waited for him, but my food started getting cold so he told me to just eat. We ended up sharing my plate of Chicken Katsu Curry because he was starving and I felt really bad. Right before the last bite of my meal was finished, his ramen came. Obviously, that doesn't make for a pleasant dining experience. ~ Food: Absolutely delicious! For starters, we ordered the Soft-Shell Crab which came with a spicy mayonnaise (£8.95) and a Salmon and Avocado maki roll (£9.50) - both really delicious and reminiscent of the excellent sushi of my childhood. If you're planning on going to Yakitori #1, I'm just going to toss my recommendation out there... DEFINITELY get the soft shell crab; it was divine! I had the Chicken Katsu Curry as my main for £10.50 - came with a side of rice, salad, and a tempura-battered sweet potato chunk. Not out of this world, but a tasty and satisfying dish nonetheless - the chicken was cooked perfectly and went very well with the rice. My partner ordered the beef fillet ramen for £14.50. All I can say is... if you're a ramen lover like we were, do not go for the ramen. Tasty noodle dish, but nothing like an actual traditional ramen. To be fair, unless a restaurant specialises in ramen it's a difficult thing to get right. --- The food was delicious, but I do feel as though it wasn't exactly worth it for the price, which is why I'm dragging my review down to 3 stars (the food quality itself is probably 4 stars). I get that seafood and sushi is expensive, but for the cheaper-quality dishes such as the curry or the ramen, the portion sizes was just too small for what you pay. That combined with the awkward wait time in between my chicken and my partner's ramen, I won't exactly be running back. Don't get me wrong, the food is amazing and I wish this business all the success in the world, but my search for the best Japanese restaurant in Cardiff is most definitely still in progress.
