a close up of a goat's face

We had the best time at Ten Apple Farm! We learned about goats, farming, and got a really fun hike with the goats. Karl and Margaret are wonderful people who make this experience extremely enjoyable and educational!

You scream. I…read morescream. We all scream... for site made ice cream on a working Maine dairy farm ! This is a special place... a farm on a hill with their own farm shop featuring glass-bottled milk, sandwiches, and most importantly... Ice Cream ! Starting mid-April or so, they open up "The Barnyard" which is a nice little petting zoo for the kids... and occasionally a "Goat Yoga" spot for adults... which is just so uniquely crazy it almost makes me wish I did yoga. Not into yoga...? I get you. Lucky for us, they also have a hardware store / lumber yard, so you could feasibly come for Mocha Chip and stay for the 4x4 milled posts, and that's not an experience you'll soon get at a national big-box lumber store. Or a Baskin Robbins, for that matter. This place is an experience. The farm is gorgeous, the staff are friendly, the animals are fun, the lumber yard is definitely there, and the product... well that's where it's at... it's excellent. There are a few working dairy farms like this one dotted around the state, and I encourage you to check out each and every one. Smiling Hill Farm is that extra special sort of place, where it's only a few miles drive outside of Portland, but it feels worlds away and it's so, so worth the effort to get to. They also have ready-to-go quarts in the freezer, their various dairy offerings, and rotating, seasonal farm shop fare. Support your local farmers! Also... I've found the local barn cats to be super friendly and just a treat to hang with. YMMV

We came for the ice cream... We weren't disappointed. Well, I was a tiny bit just because the ginger ice cream I wanted to try was sold out, but that's okay. The ladybug (strawberry with chocolate chips) and butter pecan were both delicious. It was a nice day to walk around and enjoy the farm while finishing our treat.

Every week, I read the little farmer's blog and checked out the recipes and what the week's bounty would be. I did lots of stewing, canning, salad making and savoring. In addition to the weekly pickups, there is a free pick your own flower garden, which was a lovely treat. There is also pick your own tomatillos, herbs and cherry tomatoes. There are pick your own strawberries, which store bought cant even come close to. These sweet berries melt in your mouth and make tasty jams and pie. There is also products available for purchase that change with the months, fresh baked goodies, milk, eggs, cider, berries. I made my own tomatoe sauce from scratch with my abundance of tomatoes. I also canned lots and lots of pickles and dilly beans. I also got to try new veggies I was unfamiliar with, hello kohl rabi and poc choi. There are also holiday and winter shares, as well as beef and pork. This farm share is absolutely excellent.

The one thing I miss the most about moving to Portland is Little Ridge Farm, where I had a CSA for…read morearound four years. There was nothing I didn't love about Keena Tracy's farm or the awesome CSA's she offered. Back when I was participating, I would get the full harvest share which is more than enough for two vegetarians! Each week we'd come to her stand and pick up however many pounds we were allotted that week (usually along with other complimentary goodies like apple cider, pumpkins, or corn). I have heard that CSA's from other Maine farms don't follow this same structure - that they pick and choose what each person gets. I liked the freedom of being able to load up on all the cucumbers and tomatoes, kohl rabi and sorrel (both of which I discovered BECAUSE of Little Ridge), edamame and spaghetti squash I wanted while I watched others get pounds upon pounds of garlic scapes and pac choi. As a shareholder I also had access to the pick-your-own garden with flowers, herbs, cherry tomatoes, and tomatillos. We also had the ability to pick raspberries and strawberries at a discounted price; there was also fresh bread and cheese for sale as well. And we were always invited to romp around her property exploring the fields, saying hello to the pigs and turkeys, or even volunteering some of our time helping out in exchange for a discount on our CSA. Keena also offers a Thanksgiving Share and a Holiday Share (both of which include about thirty pounds of your choice from things like onions, sweet potatoes, potatoes, carrots, beets, garlic, spinach, and sometimes apples, bags of cranberries, or EXTREMELY delicious potato rolls), and a Winter Share as well. For carnivores, there are also pork, beef, and turkey shares which I know very little about (except that people seemed to love them). Little Ridge does an exceptional job at simply growing organic (they pride themselves on not using hormones, antibiotics, cages, or chemicals) with a keen eye on both environmental and animal health as well. After writing all of this, I believe I've made a grave mistake not continuing my CSA here - what's a forty minute drive for the best produce you've ever had, right?

I decided to stop in and order take out. There were a lot of call-in tickets ahead of me and a few tables already waiting for their orders. She let me know it would be about 30 minutes. No problem. I was able to look over everything while waiting before settling into a very comfy leather chair right next to the door. Great vantage point to see all of the amazing treats they sell. They have donuts, scones, muffins, turnovers and dozens of fudge flavors!! I ordered a couple of donuts to go along with a blueberry turnover. SO GOOD!!! The donuts were perfectly fluffy and sweet and the turnover, flakey fruity and perfect! Great - fresh made to order breakfast sandwiches on a biscuit. They are satisfying - so tasty and filling! They are hearty. The couple that owns and runs this business are down to earth and authentic. I loved listening to them work together, it made me laugh when they had a disagreement, she apologized when I went to pick up and pay for my order. I told her, no need, it was like I was at a family home with real people having real conversations. I highly recommend this business and I look forward to using up the rest of my gift card and once that is done, I will be back for more yummy food.

The service is very friendly, and it feels like you're stepping into a neighborhood shop where everyone knows each other...very welcoming vibe. The day me and my family stopped in, we were hungry for breakfast. We tried the pumpkin spice crumble muffin, the bacon/egg/cheddar on a croissant sandwich, and a cinnamon maple something pastry. All of it was DELICIOUS! All very fresh and made with love. The breakfast sandwich was one of the best I've had...the bacon and cheese was high quality, and the flavors blended so beautifully. There are a few things tables, and a couple of comfy chairs for eating in. We will definitely go back.

I stopped in after searching for Hop Water and saw on the Hop Water website the Good Life Market sold it. I arrived about a half hour before close so I was one of few customers and ended up buying a ton and wanting more. First, I found a 4 pack of beer that had JUST been released in Burlington VT and then Portland ME (collaboration beer) and immediately grabbed it. Absolute score! I was super impressed with the beer selection, both refrigeratorated and on the shelf, plus N/A options, hop waters, mixers, you name it. Before I even made it to the beer section I was drawn to the prepared food because I was hungry and knew I would have to prepare something when I got home. I got smoked ribs (probably a half rack) for $11.99, Cole slaw and a broccoli bacon salad. They had multiple refrigerators and freezers with everything you can imagine, frozen Slab pizza, health drinks, locals meats, local ice cream, etc. I noticed a huge wall of local coffee so I will be going back to hopefully find espresso beans, which are challenging to come by. I didn't notice inside seats but that would be a good addition. For the ribs, I wrapped them in foil and baked at 350 for 20-30 minutes. I was so happy to find real food, prepped for easy reheating. I will definitely be back with my husband to order sandwiches and pick up more goodies.
