Stepped right into the boat and into the fish in ten minutes. Caught 17-20 stripped bass in the 5-20 lb range. Live mackerel for bait. Mostly used no weight and little tackle between us and the fish - a great experience. Halfway thru the trip we ran from the Bath, ME area.out to the coast near Fort Popham to stock up on more bait l, which was fun too as we had 3-5 of those on one jig a couple times. John was friendly and helpful. His VAST experience in the fishery is obvious. He is on the water he says about 170 trips/year. His boat is well configured with side sonar and station keeping (GPS synced) electric engine on the bow. We experimented with locations a lot. He's got hundreds of marked waypoints on his map. With side sonar out to 150-200 feet he can tell where the fish are holding. If no obvious action after like 20 minutes we move on. I've fished all my life..I'm hard pressed to remember a better day on the water. Stripped bass hit like a a sledgehammer and are strong fighters. This was the only species we encountered. We were able to release most fish due to the magic of the circle hook. We kept one mainly because the foul hook was going to kill it anyway. Go.

Deep Boat Hard to…read morepass up a boat ride to see some adorable puffins while visiting Maine, so we decided to give Hardy Boat Cruises a go on their "Puffin Watch" tour. The Good: *About a twenty minute drive from gorgeous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. *Staff was friendly *You're not stuck in your seat for the entire journey as you're free to move about once the boat gets going. *About as close as one can get to the puffins without going on the island they hangout. *Overall, it was a really fun boat ride and you get to see some neat stuff. The Meh: *It's not cheap at $51/adults (13+) and Kids (2-12) *They have a representative from National Audibon on the boat which is awesome--but you can't hear a weird she says thru their archaic "sound" system. Between the waves and engine noise, she could've been reading the dictionary for all we know. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The Meh: *Their "off-site" parking lot is definitely just that--off-site! It's a good 10min walk from the parking to the pier, but that's not even the worst of it. You have to walk on a two-lane road with almost no shoulder and lots of curves, so definitely be aware of your surroundings. Or it'll coy-tains for you, see? Coy-tains! *And--as if the above wasn't bad enough--they have the gall to charge you $20 for the pleasure of parking there. -_- Conclusion: Fun ocean adventure to see the puffins--but be prepared to crack open your wallet for this pleasure.

I've been to the island just for the lobster bake twice before. I signed up again this year, and when confirming my registration, decided "last minute" to camp overnight! I'm thrilled I did, as I've said the last two times that I wanted to stay for the weekend. Next time, I think I'll stay two or three nights. This is such a peaceful place, with flush toilets and no showers or beach. You can swim off the dock in brackish water ... I'm not sure of the salinity.

Once you arrive, there is a golf cart rental place (Mike's) that you can use to explore the town. Other options are bike rentals or kayak. Although, the island is large & hilly so on a hot day a golf cart is clutch. The main shops and eateries are all centrally located near the ferry. Once the afternoon hits, they become more popular and may build lines. To explore the coastline, it's suggested to find a map as reference. Although there are signs to lead you in the direction. Beaches are small but have beautiful views. Honestly, everything on the island is picturesque. The only thing I highly suggest is making it over early to make it easier to maneuver.

About six of them, from what I've gathered, and they all have different unique things on them from actually living there to beaches and golfing to hiking trails. Peaks Island is the largest--and most populus--of which, and features a beach, museums, shopping, hiking and even a small lighthouse. Unfortunately, we didn't plan our travel here very well as we basically just got here, did a short hike, and then bounced. Next time I wouldn't mind getting an Airbnb on the island and having a few days to reconnoiter it and the surrounding islands more. Next time, Gadget! Next tiiiiimmmeeeee...!

Crew and Captain were well-versed in the history of the area. If you had questions they were open to answering or at times making a fun anecdote. So much history of the schooner, Bagheera, and the islands around Portland mainland. They handled the schooner with incredible poise and care. Some folks brought their own snacks and beverages on-board which wasn't advertised, but such a great idea. Definitely colder than I expected when the sun started setting and the winds picked up. Wow! What a beautiful beach area…read more I say area because there is so much to do besides enjoying the beach. There are many grassy areas, the water, and of course the beach. You can rent kayaks or just layout. There are also gourmet food trucks for your dining pleasure. We saw a few couples picnicking, playing frisbee, paddle boarding, kayaking, and laying out. My son dove off the rocks - very cool. Water was still too cold for me. Up to my ankles was enough. Free parking and entry - finally a $$$ break! We hated to leave!

If you are looking for a fun way to have and adventure in Casco Bay this is the way to do it! My first trip on the Frances was hosted by winewise events and I learned all about Pinot Noir while enjoying cheeses and amazing views of Maine's rocky shore. For my second cruise I joined Bread and Butter catering the culinary geniuses behind the former Pocket Brunch for the inaugural Pocket cruise where I drank tropical drinks from a coconut while enjoying delicious Caribbean dishes created by Chef Josh Potocki.
