They believe in improving the quality of life to the residence of Morro Bay and neighboring community's. Station 53 is a full service fire station. Meaning they are capable of handling just about any kind of emergency situation. They are equipped to handle structure fires, wild fires, car fires, boat fires, water rescues and even search and rescue. Station 53 handles around 1700 service calls a year. Making them one of the busiest fire station in the city. Fire prevention, code enforcement, disaster preparedness, public education are some other responsibilities of the fire department. The station is manned by 10 full time personnel, and 20 part-time firefighters. I would like to thank all the brave men and women in Station 53 for doing such an outstanding job. Our city is broke. Everyone has made sacrifices. I don't know anyone who has NOT taken a pay cut in…read morethis economy. Well, except for SLO FD & PD. Since they have "binding arbitration" (which was ruled unconstitutional, but they're "grandfathered" in), they've had nothing but pay increases for as long as there has been binding arbitration. Now that the city has cut everyone else's salaries, SLO FD still refuses to sacrifice like the rest of us. Special Measures A & B could go a long way to bringing our budget back into balance, but the firemen are using a lot of FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) to attempt to sway people to vote no. I respect law enforcement and firefighters more than most. My dad was LAPD. My brother is a firefighter. Still, in these times, EVERYONE needs to sacrifice. The PD & FD could have retained their binding arbitration rights by sacrificing voluntarily. Instead, they gave themselves raises while the rest of us suffer. Now they're upset that it's time to take binding arbitration away.
