Never even heard of Camp Roberts until I came here for WAREX. It's got some WWII barracks-no exaggeration. Back in WWII they kept German and Italian POWs. So the camp itself isn't in the greatest shape. There are some condemned buildings and the post doesn't get enough money to destroy those buildings. But the scenery is pretty nice. There are some really nice run routes here. Some hills, not too bad. The DFAC is run by contractors and the head cook is pretty serious about the food. I actually had mash potatoes with rosemary in it! It was pretty good for Army mash potatoes. So what is really cool here. The museum. It's only open on Tuesdays and Saturdays but you should really try to check it out. I was amazed at the history of Camp Roberts. There's a lot of history here. And I mean a lot. This is how I knew about the German and Italian soldiers. Oh and all the vineyards in the area? It's because enough of those Italian POWs loved it enough to stay here in the States.

Breakfast chow! A fluffy waffle , beef sausage, and firm eggs!

The food is . Filled my stomach and beats an MRE. It wasn't delicious but it was yummy good. My belly full .

    Mold on my bagel.

I have been training at this location for 16 years. This is the worst the food has ever been. All of us here dread going to the DFAC to eat. We find ourselves adding assorted hot sauces to mask the taste or cover the lack of flavor in each bite. It's unfortunate that this is the only option for food for soldiers in a specific type of duty status. I see foreign service members eating in the DFAC and I'm embarrassed that this is the food they will associate with the Armed Forced of the United States. Even something simple like a bagel in a continental breakfast can't seem to be done correctly. This is the worst food that I've had in my career.

    Demolition of obsolete infrastructure, 2014.

Dramatic improvements in living conditions and quality of life over the last couple of years - still quite a ways to go. It's an austere place if you are looking to pogue out in the barracks. What it is, is a great place for true military training. The ranges, air space, and maneuver areas are unequaled between Ft Irwin and Ft Lewis. Airspace management has been upgraded to 21st century standards. A new high-tech, instrumented urban training center is open for business. The links with Ft Hunter-Liggett are better than ever, creating opportunities for large-scale unit training.

    Shit hole!

It's either too hot or too cold and there's sand everywhere. The bathrooms don't really work sometimes but other than that it's alright.

The original building was made of adobe, had a roof of hand-made tiles, and used strips of rawhide to tie the pine rafters in place. It is located directly across the street from Mission San Miguel Arcángel. It has had many different owners, and the property has been a a stagecoach stop with a hotel and tavern, as well as an elementary school and many other businesses. In 1923, the property was purchased as a tourist attraction, and the new owner added the gift shop. The County of San Luis Obispo purchased it in 1964 as the adobe had fallen into disrepair. In 1968, the Friends of the Adobes formed to preserve and restore the adobe. The site now operates as a county park with a history research library, museum, and gift shop. There are plenty of trees to enjoy a picnic or an outing. The Ríos-Caledonia Adobe is right off the freeway, and admission is free.

The Rios-Caledonia Adobe is located on an old stage road, and served as a sort of halfway point between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Back in the 19th Century it was a functioning hotel and saloon. The Friends of the Adobe are some committed historians to have done such a fine job in putting this place back together and collecting the artifacts to fill the museum. I cam through a couple months ago and the place was being put back together after some major building re-enforcement's, I spoke with a curator and was told of the once a year event Caledonia Day. I Came back for Caledonia Day, a late September event, and found the place fully back together, with the museum in good shape and the gift store packed, and lots of different groups supporting the events annual whoop de do. It included dutch oven cook off, old time engines, a small car show, ice cream. BBQ and more. Now back to the Adobe and grounds. There is an upstairs and ground level to the museum. It has many historical photos, labelled well, and even a mammoth tusk discovered nearby in 1969 WOW. The upstairs is a historical display of life in an earlier time. For those interested in the early California History it is a good display. The Rios Caledonia Adobe is California Historical Landmark No. 936. There is a very nice library and historical reference building that is available for researchers of California History.

The Mission is remotely nested near the Santa Lucia mountains approximately 30 miles north of Paso Robles, and is another one-half hour drive off the 101 freeway on back roads. One passes through the Hunter Liggett Military Reservation near the very small village of Jolon. The isolated and picturesque area is quite different from the other established California missions. Think of the song, "Home on the Range" - "...where the deer and the antelope play"... but in this case, it is where the deer and wild pigs roam. This mission was the third of the twenty-one missions in California founded in 1771 by the Franciscans. The remote area posed many challenges over the hundreds of years it existed, a few times almost abandoned. Currently, the Mission San Antonio de Padua has a museum highlighting life from its original working days when the Salinans, an indigenous people of the area, worked with the Franciscans. There is an active parish along with a gift shop, restored buildings and a courtyard. The Mission offers cuttings of established roses and grapes for a small donation. Mission San Antonio de Padua also hosts group retreats. There are picnic tables on the grounds of this secluded mission where we enjoyed a light lunch we brought with us. Toilet facilities are limited.
