Deliciously authentic and a great change of pace from falling into the touristy fish-and-chips-all-the-time trap, Tem Tep provides fantastic selection and a large portion sizes. I'll be the first to admit my girlfriend and I had not anticipated coming here, but after finding out just how popular Churchill Arms is in the late evening during a weekday (re: they were so full I was told by the hostess to try again tomorrow), we wandered into Tem Tep Vietnamese Kitchen. We were warmly welcomed and immediately seated in a brand new and modern dining area. Our waitress walked us through the menu and provided recommendations on what to try from the copious menu. We finally decided on the Traditional Chicken Pho (£9.50) and the Chicken with Mushrooms and Vegetables (£11.50). If the prices seem a bit stiff it's because you're getting a massive portion size (you could order one entrée and an appetizer for two people and be satiated) and delicious fresh ingredients. Upon first tasting the pho, I though it was a bit bland, but I quickly realized it was because there is significantly less salt than pho places in the U.S. Once I gave it a good stir and captured some more of the ingredients, the dish really came alive, with the flavors only enhanced by the various herbs they serve on the side for you to add. The chicken with mushrooms and vegetables was also packed with traditional flavors, especially the mushrooms which were perfectly cooked between tender and just a little chewy. Overall, the fresh ingredients, generous portion sizes, and a level of authenticity really won me over at Tem Tap. It's a welcome change-up for tourists and locals alike. read more

Haven't written a review on Yelp for months and months; only such a disappointing meal could free me of my self imposed Yelpxile. Place was absolutely dead and freezing. It was pouring with rain outside so going elsewhere at this point wasn't an option, plus, curiosity. Food took forever, like 45 minutes, and we were literally the only table. Ordered a grilled chicken bun cha (noodles with chargrilled chicken and assorted salad served with fish sauce dressing thing) which was awful. The chicken was strangely pink yet chargrilled, and tasted semi-raw but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. Sauce and noodles, not good, and veggies consisted largely of shredded lettuce. A complete failure of what should be an easy and satisfying dish. Server was useless too - was on his phone most of the time and just not at all friendly. One star in reality but I ate some of the food, plus bowl of steamed rice was good. read more

The 5 star rating is primarily for the service. We got here a little late at night and had to wait a bit for our table. About 15-20 minutes. In that time, we were seated, extra chairs pulled out to make space for us to sit down inside where it was warmer, we were brought glasses of water and complimentary prawn wafers. All of this was while waiting for our table. I have never had such good service while waiting in London. We ordered while waiting. They asked if we would like our drinks while we waited and brought us our Iced coffees too. As soon as we sat down, our starters appeared - duck summer rolls & beef wrapped in betel leaves. The summer rolls were lovely, but I was amazed at the beef in betel leaves.In India, betel leaves are eaten raw, wrapped around mouth freshening and digestive ingredients (paan). This was my first tme having them cooked and they gave a unique flavour to the beef. The Bun thit nuong - Chargrilled pork was full of flavour & a complete meal in itself. Their pho was also really good. The food was delicious, but as I said before it was the service that made this visit truly memorable. Tem Tep gets a strong 3.5 stars from me. Sevice was good and the price was affordable. I figure the quality of pho stock is a determining factor for me in deciding the overall quality of food in a Vietnamese cafe. Unfortunately, the beef stock and chicken stock were weak an watery. Tem Tep is a very new modern Vietnamese restaurant over 2 floors half way down Kensington Church Street. A warm atmosphere and a full house on a Monday night is where I begin my 2-sided review. I am going to start with the good. And boy was the food good! The best salt and pepper squid I have ever had, mixed with fried spring onions, garlic etc. absolutely lovely. The lime-cured beef starter was great too, good portion size, flavourful, medium-cooked beef slices were tender and tasty. Chicken wings only came in a portion of 3 large wings. Mango salad was excellent, almost all mango, slightly small for the price though. Main course of whole mackeral was tasty but tricky with so many bones! Fried dry beef pho noodles was slightly oily but generous and as good as you can get, with tender, soft soft beef. The home-made lime juice had a touch too much sugar but enjoyable nevertheless. The restaurant itself is cosy and the upstairs is almost like a living room! So what was the negative part? The service. The waitresses were calm, almost disinterested staff with little or no catering experience or sense to notice what was happening before their eyes. As an extremely new restaurant, they had major major teething problems. The service, we were kindly warned by the manager, would be slow and we would need to be patient. The speed of the food coming out was almost unbearable but as we had been warned, it wasn't the issue. The staff had no idea what was going on, people left without having their mains, or one person had eaten, yet no waitress noticed enough to chase this other meal. So why have I given this place 4 stars? The manager. Her name began with T and she was Filipino. She is THE saving grace of the restaurant. From the very beginning, she was charming, personable, polite, lovely, remembered my name, kind, understanding and just a joy. She was the one who told us the problems with the speed of food being served, but she did it with such grace and loveliness, we didn't mind. Nor did we mind when our starters and mains got lost in the system and only random parts of our meals came out. The whole meal took 2 hours in total and unhappy patrons all around us upped and left. After my first taste of squid, I didn't want to leave. I believed in the food and in the manager. I LOVED my meal, I left the restaurant happy, joy and yummy food filled my heart and tummy and I cannot wait to go back. Slow service be damned! Give this place a go in a few weeks when they have sorted things out. The fresh food and honest desire to create a delicious plate will win you over. As it did me. read more

Visiting London from Paris and my landlord recommended this place. I ordered on the waiter's recommendation: slow-cooked chicken (in hot pot) with egg fried rice. I noticed on the menu the mandatory "service charge" (their words) of 12.5%. When the bill came, the waiter asked how much of a tip I wanted to add. I pointed out to him that the service charge was included -- as the menu clearly stated it to be. He replied that none of that service charge actually goes to the wait staff, but instead it goes to the "company." I told him that this was a matter that the wait staff should take up with the "company." Somebody is misrepresenting things, whether it be the menu or the waiter. Regardless I will not be back, despite the fact that the food was good, although not sublime. read more

Welcoming interior. The radiator was on high for a tropical environment. Hahah. Clean and new interior. Quick service but the food didnt meet the expectation for the Chinese tongues. We ordered pho. My chicken was those which has been frozen in freezer for million years ans the beef was just weird... like the kind you find as cold cut from Tesco. The soup was not hot enough when served. Finally, something different in the neighborhood! Tem Tep offers quite good Vietnamese cuisine at reasonable prices (for the neighborhood). The summer rolls, vermicelli, and pho are all of a good and authentic standard. The service is very friendly and they try hard to please, even if there were a few very minor growing pains (we were there on opening week) that they rectified right away. One piece of advice for them is to make it a bit more child friendly given the number of families in the neighborhood. Will definitely be going back regularly. read more

We were looking for a quick hot asian-styled soup pho. The food was consistently good, not phenomenal. But the service was excellent!! Met one of the waiters and he was really friendly, helpful with tips about the local neighborhood and even took off the tax/service charge as a welcome to the city. Very glad there's a good Vietnamese restaurant near the northern end of Kensington Church Street, though it's not cheap: I had the beef pho soup, which was nice and large, but not extraordinary for £11.50. For a random weekday night, it was great! I ordered the vermicelli noodles with vegetables, and it was piping hot and delicious. Enjoyed dinner with a couple glasses of wine - fine, but certainly not memorable. Service was WONDERFUL. Friendly, not overly solicitous, prompt. Unfortunately, my family and I had an awful experience at this restaurant--so bad in fact that we left before ordering. According to the waiter, the menu was fixed. Apparently, the chefs are incapable of leaving one ingredient out of a meal for a child. This inflexibility makes this restaurant completely unsuitable for families with children. We ate here for dinner, it was hot (nearly August) and we sweated our way through dinner but the food was as expected. The summer rolls were a nice starter for our family of four, as good as any summer rolls I've had around the world. We also ordered stir fried chicken, special fried rice, and chicken satay which the children enjoyed to the last morsel. I ordered chargrilled pork & crispy spring roll dry vermicelli for myself and nearly licked the bowl clean. The food isn't too good here. The pho is flavour-less. The spring rolls are expensive and lacking in flavour. The dry vermicelli dishes weren't very good and overpriced for the value. The staff were super friendly and the redeeming grace but when the bill came they had the option on the credit card machine asking for more than the obliged 12.5%. I think there aren't a lot of Vietnamese restaurants in London and obviously this is the only one in the area - so the restaurant has decided because there is no competition to serve less than mediocre food at higher than average prices. It's been working so far for them it appears but I'm not sure how they haven't gone out of business with this lacklustre attitude. I'd say avoid it and go elsewhere, you won't find authentic Vietnamese here nor will you get a good price quality or a good value meal. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. I have ordered from this place twice now via Deliveroo. The first time, I ordered a pho - it was overpriced and flavourless that's when I decided I wouldn't order from them and would rather pay more money to get it delivered by Jinn from a restaurant further away. I thought I'd give them another go (silly me)and so I ordered a bun ho (spicy soup) and the clay oven cooked goat and a side of rice; they charge £12 for the goat which largely consisted of oil. I actually counted the pieces of meat as I was so shocked at the portion size. It's barely a portion for one person. Same with the egg fried rice I'm afraid. £5.50 for half a small takeout box of rice. You'd think that the rice would come as a free side with the clay cooked dishes but nope. I think that because they are I Kensington, they think it's ok to overcharge for such small portions. Honestly, there are much better places to eat than this. What a disappointment. read more
