Appeared as the best pho around Leicester Square in Central London, hoping that it's not. Later realized this is not really a pho restaurant, as they have a lot of other things on the menu. Surprisingly the broth was the best part of the soup. We had a 3 hour break between Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2, and I had seen many Pho restaurants in the Chinatown area. So found the one with most stars on both Yelp and Maps, and Com Viet came up. It is a short walk, and they promptly opened at 5, and we were the first ones one. We were done with the meal and out of there in 30 minutes, so they were very efficient. The food was OK, and served quickly. The beef pho is normally £13.50, but I asked for extra noodles so got bumped to £17 (which is more than 20 dollars). It didn't come with extra noodles (or they serve very little noodle in the normal). It is the thick rice noodle kind...if someone orders extra, there is no reason why you shouldn't just overfill it...rice noodle is cheap. What I should have done is get a refill after I had left over broth. The broth itself was very good, but there was very little beef (just sliced and no other options) and the bean sprouts, basil, and culantro. It was all pretty limp and sparse. It was strange...they had all the signs of a generic restaurant that serves a lot of dishes, and has pho on the menu..but this usually means the broth is made from powder. I don't think this was...it tasted like genuine cooked broth....but the noodle miss really put a bad taste for this place. Also ordered chicken wings (£9.80) and spring rolls (£8.60). The wings were good...7 pieces cooked over a charcoal fire, but a bit bland and not crispy. The spring rolls were 3 small ones, split in half, served with chili sauce, stuffed with vegetables. The service was OK, doing the minimum. There is a mandatory 12.5% service charge added. Yes, I know that this is a tourist area, but the Chinese and Korean restaurants do a good job of serving a good rendition of their cuisine that could survive in other non-tourist places. Com Viet would not survive outside of this area....the food is too mediocre and expensive, and would be a bad choice for a pho craving. read more

We stopped here for lunch after wandering through the hustle and bustle of Covent Garden where all the restaurants were filled to the brim with tourists. This is a small quiet place (with lots of seating downstairs). We had the Banh Xeo, Bun Cha, and Goi Cuon. We also had the Elderflower and the Ginger drinks. Everything was very fresh and flavorful. Tasty bowl of pho, but not hot enough. Pho has to be piping hot, but i could understand that's difficult since the kitchen is downstairs and it would be very difficult to bring up the soup. Com Viet has excellent food. We ordered 2 starters. 1st starter was the Grilled Beef wrapped in Betel Nut Leaf. This was served with Lettuce and Vermicelli together with Mint Leaf and Cilantro plus the ubiquitous House made sauce - the grilled Beef had an excellent umami flavor. We had the Banh xeo next. The Banh xeo is. Crepe like pancake folded over a savory preparation of wok fried pork, shrimp, bean sprouts and scallions. The Banh xeo is also served with lettuce leaf and the ubiquitous House made sauce - the Banh xeo was messy to eat but really delicious. I had the Banh Cha as my main course while my wife had the Crab and Chicken Tomato noodle Soup. The Banh Cha was excellent with a perfectly peppery Shrimp and Pork "meat loaf". Ever since I saw Barrack Obama have Banh Cha in Hanoi on Anthony Bourdain's show, I wanted to try it!. The Banh Cha did not diss appointment. Wow, what a find! Saw this place on Dojo and wanted to try out some Pho and I have to say this is one of nicest meals I've had. My girlfriend had a really fresh dish with noodles, spring rolls and veg. Not gonna lie here the spring rolls were the best I've eaten. I had a spicy pho with beef and pork and it was superb! Staff were super nice and the place itself felt like a great stop for lunch, not too intense. They have a downstairs area which looked cool and more suited to a larger group. The coffee was incredible and food was delicious yet affordable, at around a tenner a meal (I'm a big lad and I was stuffed!) Topped it off with two bottles of imported Saigon beer and will definitely be returning! read more

Our first Vietnamese spot in London. Place was overall nice atmosphere. We got to eat downstairs which has nice ambience. Food overall was pretty good. I ordered the bun bo hue (spicy noodle) and lamb appetizer. My girlfriend got the fried duck in the tamarin sauce and vegetable stir fried. We also had the spring rolls. Everything was great. I ordered the beef pho and grilled spareribs. The pho noodle presentation was very pretty. However, the broth tasted strangely gamey. Not very pleasant. Half of the ribs were good. This place is a hidden gem! As my friends and I walked around searching for a place to eat before our show started, we were losing hope that we would find a place without a 45 minute wait. Com Viet is a little easy to miss as most of the seating is downstairs. From the outside, it looks like nothing special, but once you go downstairs there is more seating and the decor is lovely. I had a hankering for some delicious Pho and as I have been looking up restaurants in Cambridge (where there is only one Vietnamese place) it was on my mind. We were able to sit right down and enjoy dinner before going to see a show at the Duke of York's Theater. I started off with the Cha Nem, Vietnamese spring rolls, which are filled with crab, mushrooms, and pork. They were delicious and I wanted to devour more. Next up, I had the Pho with beef and it was so good. My friend ordered the Bun Thit Nuong, BBQ Pork Loin with Rice Vermicelli, lemon-grass marinated Pork loin, served with crispy spring rolls, Pork, Daikon & Herbs. This was also a very tasty entree. First time in London, had to hit up a Vietnamese joint. I had the Bun Thit Noung Cha Gio (#49), it was excellent!

Popped in with the family for a quick lunch on a rainy weekday afternoon. We had to trudge downstairs with our suitcases but were greeted with a surprisingly spacious yet cozy eating area. Three of us had the set lunch which included a starter, a main and a drink. This was the way to go. My son ordered off the main menu with a side of rice and a drink which was quite a bit more expensive. I had the lemongrass chicken which was quite flavorful. The summer and spring rolls were standard fare. We were all satisfied with our food - traditional Vietnamese dishes. The service was prompt and friendly too. Totally missing pho, as I haven't had it in ages since I made the move from Vancouver. Decided to try this place out based on the positive reviews.. and I was pretty underwhelmed. I went for their lunch special, which was around £10, and you get to choose from a selection of appies + entrees. I felt it was a bit pricey for what we got. My friend had the spicy squid, and I had the beef ribs (3 ribs). The spicy squid was pretty disappointing. It was hot but squishy, not crispy, and didn't have the flavor or heat. Quite bland overall. The beef ribs were alright. I ended up ordering the beef pho - and while it wasn't terrible, it certainly wasn't authentic. While the beef was tender, the soup definitely lacked body, it didn't have a rich robust flavor and felt like it was missing a lot of the spices (or maybe it wasn't strong enough), of fennel seeds, star anise, cloves, etc.. it was definitely missing the onion! Was the broth made from bones? I really couldn't tell, it looked very very clear, and though I wouldn't want a soup full of scum from boiling bones, I couldn't really detect that it was fresh broth boiled from scratch due to the lack of flavor and the clarity of the soup. Maybe they did a good job of skimming everything? I kinda think it was just prepackaged beef stock with some other flavors mixed in. Ended off with a viet coffee, which is supposed to sit through a filter and drips into a cup of condensed milk. It was brought to us right away, which surprised me since they are supposed to bring the cup / filter to sit on your table - either way, the coffee should take about 10'ish minutes at the very least to filter through. But when it was ordered, it came out within a minute. It just tasted like sweet coffee. .. not authentic.. wouldn't come back. read more

Quickly seated downstairs on a weekend night when most other restaurants in the area had outrageous waiting times. Glad we ended up here instead. Excellent Vietnamese summer rolls to start. The chilli salt and pepper squid lacked the chilli, but had decent flavor. Had bun bo hue pho while my significant other had the assorted mushroom pho. Both did the job for filling us up, but in my case it lacked heat and I expected more beef than I was served (which seems to be a recurring theme in England). I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. Having walked past it continually for the past 10 years, I'd never once thought to come inside as I figured it was a tourist trap. However a friend recently suggested going there for the lunch deal (2 courses for £11) so we went. It doesn't look particularly appealing from the outside and the fish sauce smell was pretty fragrant upon entering, but the food itself was really tasty, the pho was served in a big filling bowl and the service was great. I ordered spring rolls and got the fried pork rolls. It was average and oddly with a lot of oil dripping from it. I got the ginger lemongrass drink non fuzzy but it tasted like warm tap water with sprinkle of sugar water. I wanted clay pot fish typically served with catfish with the dark salty brown sauce. They offered a fake plastic "clay pot" served with sea bass. Sea bass?? Definitely not the right fish. The sauce was no more than some brown stuff mixed in with water. The Vietnamese iced coffee was the best surprise of the evening. Great coffee strength and right amount of condensed milk. The only thing they got right. I asked to keep the menu for possible second dish. Mid way through the meal they took the menu to my dismay but after the bad sea bass it was for the best not to order more. i vacationed in the uk in the spring, and spent three nights in london - ate at com viet every day without a flicker of traveler's remorse. i can't speak for the rest of the menu, but i can recommend you come here just for the bun bo hue (as i did... three times). this is quite possibly one of my favorite noodle dishes, but it's hard to find a satisfying take on the east coast. somehow, in london (is six hours of hurtling over the atlantic the price i must pay to taste this beauty again?), the soup is spicy, clear, and refreshing but still hearty (without tasting of an oil slick or the dead sea, as many "flavorful" broths fall into the trap of doing). thin slices of meat lightly cook and float alongside perfectly slippery, chewy round rice noodles. you can top everything off from an accompanying plate of peppers, beansprouts, cilantro, and limes that only make the best better. for those still unconvinced, i will one day prove my loyalty with a follow-up review. read more

There's not much more to say about it really, I wasn't exactly overwhelmed but there's nothing wrong with it either. Com VIet looks tiny when you walk past on Garrick St. But underneath its timid exterior, this place has a great space downstairs, with cubicles suitable for bigger groups. The menu is fairly extensive - as with most authentic Vietnamese restaurants. You can even see into the steamy kitchen from the seating downstairs. All good so far. The food - We opted for the ox tongue pho, the beef pho and summer rolls. the beef pho and summer rolls being my Vietnamese food litmus test. The pho was okay - the portions were well-sized, the noodles good and toppings were generous. The soul of pho is the broth though - and sadly, although this tasted okay, it was also your standard MSG affair. It didn't have the fragrance of star anise and other flu-combating herbs that I would expect from a truly authentic broth. The summer roll was also average - it was big, but too loosely wrapped, although the mint, vermicelli and prawn ratio was well-balanced. The service was a bit hit and miss - some waiters were very good, whilst others were slackers - I think it's time to do a headcount rationalisation, Com Viet. To be honest, it doesn't quite hit the spot, but if I was in covent garden and dire for my pho fix, I wouldn't say no either. Spot-on 4 but off of my maiden voyage experience; this rating could chage! -Pho ga (chicken) broth was very nice; for once NOT the BEEF broth dumped on noodles w/chicken. too many noodles though even for a non-carb-phobe like me so I'd ask for less. -Summer rolls: good, passed the test, & glad they had evenly distributed ingredients. - Bun Thit with grilled pork belly & spring rolls: pretty good, liked the pork belly touch & the fish sauce was nice. Odd to me, that the dish came on a plate vs. a bowl but altogether was a fine dish. Must try the Bun Bo Hue next and the Banh Xeo. Sadly, they don't offer Banh Cuon. Great food, reasonable price and in central London! The menu is varied and there was plenty of things I hadn't tried before.I had the prawn cakes to start which were delicious. For main I had the Bun Bo Ha Hanoi which again was delicious and also HUGE! The beef was perfectly cooked. The staff were really friendly and helpful when it came to picking food. Also explained how the food was meant to be eaten etc. Will definitely be coming back here to try more things on the menu! read more

So I was in Covent Garden and decided to introduce my girl to Vietnamese food (she's Italian, forgive her) and dropped into this place. Yeah, the decor is that of a typical dive but I'm here for the food so, who cares. No standard-issue hoisin sauce, siraccha, and fishsauce bottles on the table ... not a good sign. Ordered the typical "beginner's" dishes: - Cha gio (fried rolls): decent, not great. The nuoc chom seems a bit off but still good. - Goi cuon (fresh summer rolls): decent, missing chives. The dipping sauce is too much hoisin, and too little peanut. - Pho bo (beef pho with the rare steak): first off, the vegetable condiment plate had bean sprouts, sliced chiles, lemon (should be lime), cilantro, and mint(!). That's it. No thai basil and mint does not go with pho. - Banh xeo (vietnamese moon crepe): the ideal consistency for this dish is that it should be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Well, they went overboard on the crispy part and the crepe crumbles like saltine crackers in Oprah's back pocket. Again, the nuoc chom is too gingery and needs more line and fish sauce. Luckily, my girl didn't know any better and wolfed everything down but I ain't no chump! I'm heading over to the other side to try the other VNmese restaurant. read more

This place wouldn't survive 5 minutes around Old Street where competition amongst Vietnamese eateries is high. The price point is high for the quality of food you receive, I can see that a lot of the price tag would go towards ground rent with this being slap bang in the middle of the tourist district. I went as part of a group and I was disappointed by patchy service. We were on the top floor so I guess we were easy to overlook. Things like one bowl of pho coming with all the extras (mint, beansprouts, chilli etc) but somebody else with the same dish not getting any of them. We had to ask, the lady looked a little taken aback but did oblige. Eventually. Drinks ran empty and finding a member of staff was a chore. I had hoped that pricey food + central location would mean half decent service. Nope. The pho itself is underwhelming. The broth is not all that rich or tasty. The meat hasn't been in there long enough, it's tough and chewy and sinewy. I found myself trying to subtly pull hunks of fat and gristle out of my mouth on a few occasions. Even with every single seasoning item in there, it was barely passable. I wouldn't recommend this place though I understand that in this area it can be challenging to get something half decent to eat without having to remortgage your house. I'd swerve this and take my chances elsewhere. It might not be better but I doubt it'd be much worse. read more

Came in on a rainy day after shopping in Covent Garden. I'm from Toronto so am still acclimating to paying 10quid for soup noodles.
