Surprisingly the broth was the best part of the soup. We had a 3 hour break between Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2, and I had seen many Pho restaurants in the Chinatown area. So found the one with most stars on both Yelp and Maps, and Com Viet came up. It is a short walk, and they promptly opened at 5, and we were the first ones one. We were done with the meal and out of there in 30 minutes, so they were very efficient. The food was OK, and served quickly. The beef pho is normally £13.50, but I asked for extra noodles so got bumped to £17 (which is more than 20 dollars). It didn't come with extra noodles (or they serve very little noodle in the normal). It is the thick rice noodle kind...if someone orders extra, there is no reason why you shouldn't just overfill it...rice noodle is cheap. What I should have done is get a refill after I had left over broth. The broth itself was very good, but there was very little beef (just sliced and no other options) and the bean sprouts, basil, and culantro. It was all pretty limp and sparse. It was strange...they had all the signs of a generic restaurant that serves a lot of dishes, and has pho on the menu..but this usually means the broth is made from powder. I don't think this was...it tasted like genuine cooked broth....but the noodle miss really put a bad taste for this place. Also ordered chicken wings (£9.80) and spring rolls (£8.60). The wings were good...7 pieces cooked over a charcoal fire, but a bit bland and not crispy. The spring rolls were 3 small ones, split in half, served with chili sauce, stuffed with vegetables. The service was OK, doing the minimum. There is a mandatory 12.5% service charge added. Yes, I know that this is a tourist area, but the Chinese and Korean restaurants do a good job of serving a good rendition of their cuisine that could survive in other non-tourist places. Com Viet would not survive outside of this area....the food is too mediocre and expensive, and would be a bad choice for a pho craving.

We ordered the crispy spring rolls to share, and my friend ordered the spicy beef noodle soup and I got the spicy tofu noodle soup (pho). The spring rolls came quickly and upon taking a bite, I noticed what I thought was pork or chicken inside, so as a pescatarian/doesn't eat meat I spit it out and we flagged down the server. The staff member said they were seafood spring rolls, and when we asked if there was pork, beef or chicken, he didn't know. We asked him to check with the chef, and he was gone for 5 minutes. He returned and said it was seafood only in the spring rolls, which is okay for my diet, so I continued eating the spring rolls, although was still a bit hesitant. They had a nice crunch and were good tasting, but I didn't like the mustard dipping sauce. My friend and I both liked our spicy noodle soup/pho (hers with beef, mine with tofu), although we weren't too impressed. We expected more spice, and I would have liked more vegetables or toppings in mine. The service was decent but not amazing, and the restaurant was very cold in the London winter time. The restaurant was busy on a Saturday evening but had lots of space and there never was a wait. I saw big parties of people there, couples, individuals out solo, and more, a big mix. The Condescending Giggle: When I mentioned where I'd had a properly sized, authentic bowl before, the owner and their companion actually giggled at me. There is a very good reason. The food is amazingly good and what you expect from a great Vietnamese so I would advise that they do their best to keep the chef! It is quick, light and filled with so much flavour. Our pork spring rolls had a crunchy outer layer with a sumptuous pork filling. The vegetable pancake went perfectly with the lettuce leaves and the sweet sauce. Sadly we waited a bit too long for the mains so had to have them when I got home. The Caramelised braised pork belly (Thit Kho) was just amazing. The fat just melted in my mouth and both the meat and the fat was infused with the rich flavour of the sauce. A good restaurant for a quick meal whether you are a couple or a large group. I highly recommend it even though I hope that the service is on par on the day you visit.

For a starter I had the 'soft shelled crab'. I have had this dish a number of times, both good and bad, they do it well at Tre Viet, with a decent amount of spice. For a main course I had 'Beef with chilli and lemon grass'. One again, I have had this dish a good few times. The dish had a great flavour, which is very important, but I found the meat was scarce and was not of the best quality. Overall, I was satisfied with the food. I guess you have to remember that you get what you pay for, and you really do at Tre Viet with the average main course costing around 7 pounds. Unfortunately, the main courses came with an interval of a few minutes between the four dishes we ordered, the last one coming ten minutes after the first. It was forgivable, but if forgiveness in not in your nature then it might be a problem as they offered no compensation. The Restaurant is B.Y.O alcohol which is nice, and there is an off-licence conveniently situated across the road. It is open 7 days a week until about 10pm.
