We ordered the crispy spring rolls to share, and my friend ordered the spicy beef noodle soup and I got the spicy tofu noodle soup (pho). The spring rolls came quickly and upon taking a bite, I noticed what I thought was pork or chicken inside, so as a pescatarian/doesn't eat meat I spit it out and we flagged down the server. The staff member said they were seafood spring rolls, and when we asked if there was pork, beef or chicken, he didn't know. We asked him to check with the chef, and he was gone for 5 minutes. He returned and said it was seafood only in the spring rolls, which is okay for my diet, so I continued eating the spring rolls, although was still a bit hesitant. They had a nice crunch and were good tasting, but I didn't like the mustard dipping sauce. My friend and I both liked our spicy noodle soup/pho (hers with beef, mine with tofu), although we weren't too impressed. We expected more spice, and I would have liked more vegetables or toppings in mine. The service was decent but not amazing, and the restaurant was very cold in the London winter time. The restaurant was busy on a Saturday evening but had lots of space and there never was a wait. I saw big parties of people there, couples, individuals out solo, and more, a big mix. Hiding Behind Culture: They tried to excuse the size by claiming it's an "authentic Vietnamese breakfast portion," and that servings are naturally smaller than in the US. I pointed out that I was here for dinner, paying £15. 2. The Condescending Giggle: When I mentioned where I'd had a properly sized, authentic bowl before, the owner and their companion actually giggled at me. The companion then snapped the quote: "Americans have large portions everywhere." The problem is the staff's unacceptable defensive attitude toward a legitimate customer complaint. Surprisingly the broth was the best part of the soup. We had a 3 hour break between Harry Potter Part 1 and Part 2, and I had seen many Pho restaurants in the Chinatown area. So found the one with most stars on both Yelp and Maps, and Com Viet came up. It is a short walk, and they promptly opened at 5, and we were the first ones one. We were done with the meal and out of there in 30 minutes, so they were very efficient. The food was OK, and served quickly. The beef pho is normally £13.50, but I asked for extra noodles so got bumped to £17 (which is more than 20 dollars). It didn't come with extra noodles (or they serve very little noodle in the normal). It is the thick rice noodle kind...if someone orders extra, there is no reason why you shouldn't just overfill it...rice noodle is cheap. What I should have done is get a refill after I had left over broth. The broth itself was very good, but there was very little beef (just sliced and no other options) and the bean sprouts, basil, and culantro. It was all pretty limp and sparse. It was strange...they had all the signs of a generic restaurant that serves a lot of dishes, and has pho on the menu..but this usually means the broth is made from powder. I don't think this was...it tasted like genuine cooked broth....but the noodle miss really put a bad taste for this place. Also ordered chicken wings (£9.80) and spring rolls (£8.60). The wings were good...7 pieces cooked over a charcoal fire, but a bit bland and not crispy. The spring rolls were 3 small ones, split in half, served with chili sauce, stuffed with vegetables. The service was OK, doing the minimum. There is a mandatory 12.5% service charge added. Yes, I know that this is a tourist area, but the Chinese and Korean restaurants do a good job of serving a good rendition of their cuisine that could survive in other non-tourist places. Com Viet would not survive outside of this area....the food is too mediocre and expensive, and would be a bad choice for a pho craving.

We were warmly welcomed and immediately seated in a brand new and modern dining area. Our waitress walked us through the menu and provided recommendations on what to try from the copious menu. We finally decided on the Traditional Chicken Pho (£9.50) and the Chicken with Mushrooms and Vegetables (£11.50). If the prices seem a bit stiff it's because you're getting a massive portion size (you could order one entrée and an appetizer for two people and be satiated) and delicious fresh ingredients. Upon first tasting the pho, I though it was a bit bland, but I quickly realized it was because there is significantly less salt than pho places in the U.S. Once I gave it a good stir and captured some more of the ingredients, the dish really came alive, with the flavors only enhanced by the various herbs they serve on the side for you to add. The chicken with mushrooms and vegetables was also packed with traditional flavors, especially the mushrooms which were perfectly cooked between tender and just a little chewy. Overall, the fresh ingredients, generous portion sizes, and a level of authenticity really won me over at Tem Tap. It's a welcome change-up for tourists and locals alike.
