It's a small school in a beautiful neighborhood. I've personally heard staff and principal lead weekly assemblies, and they use empowering language and examples which I am grateful my daughter is exposed to. This principle leads his staff and students with the ideals of the Golden Rule in mind. They talk about fairness and equality. They talk about diversity in respectful, factual, and age-appropriate ways. They do a lot of school spirit and community engagement/ service events. (Examples: Local H.S. Football games, spirit weeks, food drives).... I know I said it, but it's worth repeating , they are very good at keeping the parents informed... Not only about upcoming events, community outreach programs/ opportunities, parent surveys, how to get in on district meetings; but also have kept us very well informed about everything from Covid protocols/updates/ cases, to the day to day incidences that have happened during the school day . I've never been surprised with so much as why my kid has come home with a scrape on her knee. They are really laying the groundwork for creating a culture of accountability, kindness, safety, and good academics. It's November 2021 and during this time of the year, we can say we are truly grateful for this fantastic community gem. Go Brainard Bees!

This disgusting disregard for the emotional wellbeing of their students directly shows their "christian" values. What kind of catholic educational facility makes their students feel unsafe to share how they are feeling. I am extremely disappointed to say that anyone looking for a safe place will not find it at the Alemany Counseling Department. It is an extremely disappointing development and this is only one example, I pray for anyone else who has faced something similar and hasn't had the courage to speak up.

As far as public schools go, this is a pretty darn good school…read more The newly built Andres and Maria Cardenas Elementary School opened two years ago as Valley Region Elementary School #9. This is a K through 5th grade school, but they also have limited state-funded preschool -- be sure to sign-up early! Our son started here in 1st grade earlier this school year. His teacher, Ms. Sousa, has been a wonderful and encouraging mentor. I don't know how she (and the other teachers) have the energy and enthusiasm to keep up with them! We also feel very fortunate to have a teacher and school that is big on communication. Our son's teacher won't hesitate to call or email us with concerns or updates and she quickly responds to our own communications. As nice as all the contact and communication is, it's not perfect and it would be better if they were able to provide more advanced notice of events, short days, etc. Sometimes you get a notice the day before something happens. Sometimes you don't get any notice at all (it all depends on the teacher passing out the letters and your kid remembering to bring them home). If it's a significant event, LAUSD will call you with an automated recording the night before. Don't hesitate to call the front office with questions. The staff in the front office is friendly and knowledgeable, although they can get busy and overwhelmed during peak hours (just before and after school). You are also welcome to call the teachers shortly after school. Or can call the office and leave a message to arrange a parent-teacher meeting before or after school. Like most schools, I imagine, there are a lot of fund raising requests sent to parents here. Everything from candy bar sales, cookies sales, multiple school photos, year books, book sales, school shirts, etc. Not to mention special projects and events that need extra funding. Given the constant budget cuts, it's to be expected, but it can seem a little excessive to be asked for money every 3 or 4 weeks. This school is very good about security and rules. No adults are allowed onto the campus without checking in with the front office and obtaining pass. They often have assemblies, meetings and even parent classes -- how cool! This particular school has a lot of information and opportunities for low income families, ranging from health care to and free lunches and an after school program. When dropping off or picking up your children, there is a long stretch of curb for convenience and safety, but please keep it moving (think LAX). It's not for sitting around and holding up traffic! Also, be careful not to double park for even a second -- law enforcement has been quick to issue citations! The neighborhood in this area has a lot of street parking, but you may have to walk a block or two. If it also important to note that there is not a sidewalk on Calhoun between the school and Hart Street. However, I think they are planning on putting one in soon. Check street signs when parking on the street. Bottom line, this is a quality school that has a lot of potential for turning education around in the area. Let's just hope the district provides them with the budget they need to keep doing great things.

I was just like every parent who is nervous in sending off their child to high school, especially with the horror stories you hear about schools in general but I was wrong. To date I have been very pleased with the caliber and education she has received. I was completely surprised when she told me that the first day of school was an all day event that was put together by the upper grade students as a Welcome Freshman day. I had never heard of any other school making every student involved in creating a safe and welcoming atmosphere to all the new students. I can honestly say that from day one she has been happy. She likes her teachers, has excelled in subjects that she struggled with in Jr High and better yet has not missed one day of school which reflect on her grades and GPA. I have St Gen's faculty and principal to thank for providing the right tools from the start! Additionally while this is a Catholic School and values, character and respect are high on the standards they uphold, this is not your average Catholic School. It is very modern and puts its academics ahead of everything else. They are grooming and prepping students for college from 9th grade by offering College Prep, AP and Honor courses, along with a plethora of extra curricular activities. Unlike most private schools that are very rigid in their dress code, they allow the students to wear daily "Nike athletic gear" that of course is sold in the campus. This is not to say that they are not strict about the athletic uniform because they are but my point is that they have created an environment of comfort and again focuses more on the academics and athletics over dressing like you are going to church everyday. Don't get me wrong there are days that formal wear is required but its not everyday which is really cool. On the financial side of things....don't be scared or think you cannot afford it. Talk to Mrs Z and explain your concern or hestiations and trust me she will walk you thru any process. They are willing to help so don't feel discouraged if you go online and review the tuition pricing. What I find very refreshing and innovative are the night schools which take place once or twice a month every other month or so. The night school sessions feature various motivational speakers that visit from all walks of life and offer such a profound view into their life and struggles that is so inspiring and special. I personally look forward to the night schools. Mr. Horn has provided a way for you as a parent to partake in these night school events which take place in the evening. It really shows how much this school wants you as a parent to have an open dialogue with your child after the end of the event and as you drive home. I really appreciate the time and effort every faculty member puts into these events. Its really a wonderful experience to be a part of and shows the school spirit in full effect. Frankly I have not come across that type of school spirit anywhere else. Its infectious and makes you feel not only like you made the right decision in enrolling your child in this school but that they are in the right hands with people that care and are helping them evolve into adulthood.

One is about 8 stories tall with NO windows (see pic)...what is the purpose of that?? What if there is a fire? This church has endless amounts of cash, they get the city to cater to their every needs, including special law enforcement from LAPD to sweep homeless people or anyone who looks unclean from the sidewalk in front of their church. I attended church there a few times, it was very quick and strange. I would never send my kids to that high school.
