What we received was an uninspiring meal that leads me to question the legitimacy of its Top 50 status--and frankly, its place in the Top 100. This visit was a letdown, especially compared to the twelve other far superior BBQ joints we tasted this past week. The Meats: Misses and One Minor Hit The foundation of the barbecue here was weak, suggesting corner-cutting or, worse, reheating of old product. * Brisket: This was the biggest disappointment. The slice was terrible--dry, lacking juice, and with a bark that was chewy rather than crisp. It looked and tasted suspiciously like leftovers reheated from the day before, which is unacceptable minutes after opening. * Ribs: Nothing special here. They lacked the depth of smoke flavor and suffered from a distracting, undesirable "hammy" taste. There wasn't much meat on the bone, and the glaze was applied too lightly, failing to add any necessary sweetness or texture. * Jalapeño Cheese Sausage: This was the sole highlight of the meat offerings. It was a nice standard sausage with a good peppery snap to the casing and a satisfying ooze of cheddar cheese. It offered a nice, reliable counterpoint to the lackluster smoked proteins. Failed Opportunity: The Texas Twinkie The infamous Texas Twinkie completely missed the mark. While the basic concept of a bacon-wrapped, cream-cheese-stuffed jalapeño is sound, the execution here was poor. The filling was overwhelmingly cream cheese, which completely sucked the flavor out of the jalapeño and bacon. It was a great opportunity wasted by failing to include a bit of smoked brisket or chicken to give it complexity. Sides: Bland, Bland, Bland The sides tasted uninspired, suggesting they were prepared from a can or box rather than crafted from scratch--an unforgivable sin for a purported Top 50 establishment. * Creamed Corn: It was creamy but utterly bland. It needed significant elevation--perhaps charring the corn kernels or adding some diced jalapeño pieces for heat and brightness. * Mexican Rice: This was mushy and flavorless. It desperately lacked the savory depth and spice expected of Mexican rice. A small addition of pork or brisket trimmings would have provided necessary flavor and prevented it from tasting so generic. Dessert: An Unprofessional Finish The Grapefruit Pie was the final letdown. The filling tasted okay, but the crust was clearly store-bought. To be considered a Texas elite, every component should be homemade and excellent. This felt like an amateur concession. Final Verdict Overall, Teddys BBQ was profoundly uninspiring. Given that we arrived right after opening, expecting the freshest quality, and having recently toured 12 genuinely great BBQ places, this location falls far short. It simply does not belong in the Top 50, or even the Top 100. Teddys has a lot of room for improvement if it wants to justify its ranking. read more

This was our first time trying Teddy's BBQ and boy was it delicious. We decided to try it after searching YELP reviews & so glad we did. We arrived just before 2pm on a Thursday & the place was packed. The atmosphere was typical busy lunch crowd with everyone enjoying their meals. Servers were keeping up with clearing off tables & helping speed the ordering process answering questions & making recommendations. We decided to share the 2 meats plate, brisket & smoked turkey (we were lucky enough to get the last serving of turkey) with Bernie Mac & potato salad for the sides. Finishing it off with 2 drinks (iced tea was fresh & tasty) & a pecan pie. Bernie (owner) was providing excellent customer service throughout the restaurant & stopped by our table to visit. We shared that we're visiting the area from Alaska & this has been the BEST BBQ we've had while in the area. Yes, we love our BBQ! The brisket was perfect & delicious with awesome smoke ring & flavor. The smoke turkey was also perfectly delicious & juicy especially for the end piece. Yesterday, babe and I got the chance to finally visit Teddy's BBQ and we loved it! The star of the show wasn't even bbq!! We both agreed that the brussel sprouts were amazing. Like truly. The sweet and savory Asian sauce, perfectly crispy and chewy bacon bits, and melt in your mouth onions that say first look too thick but are actually perfect! My oh my! The lean brisket we had was awesome. Seasoned very well. The ribs were fall of the bone and had a nice peppery flavor. The crispy chicharrón was also bomb and we both liked the mac and cheese. Super tasty sausage as well, so suffice to say, we liked everything we got! Give them a try if you are near Weslaco. The inside is small with about 10 tables, but they have a large outside area with a bar truck parked out there for refreshment enjoyment. Service can be a little slow, especially if there is a line. I've been craving BBQ for a good minute, so my first option for food as soon as I arrived in town was BBQ. I couldn't have been happier with the recommendation! The restaurant is small, but business is booming, and after finishing my meal, I can see why. The service is quick to get the line seated and served as reasonably as possible, and the staff was friendly and very accommodating! My ribs were half and half meat and fat. I prefer more meat to my ribs, but the meat was tender and had a great flavor. My sides were cream of corn and mash potatoes. Loved the cream of corn, and the mash potatoes were so creamy and had just the right amount of chedder. Thankfully, my lunch buddies had other choices, and I was able to sample more than what I ordered. The brisket was a bit dry, but the bbq sauce is a great add-on. Purchased the 3 plate option and a family member got the chopped brisket sandwich. My plate had only 2 slices of brisket which was good, but I felt they skimped on the portion size. Both the cream corn and macaroni was a too watery (not thick enough). Stood in line for about 10 minutes before being served and the staff were very nice. The seating area is small and quint, with seating outside available. For my plate, sandwich, 2 drinks and an extra side the total was $51. Which isn't bad for a BBQ joint, but it was the portion size that was lacking. This was a one and done place for me. read more

My favorite Texas BBQ place by far, the staff always has the best recommendations & are always so nice, and the VALUE is unheard of anywhere else. Sure the standard bbq picks will price similar to other places, but their specialty plates??? Oh it's absolutely insane they knock it out of the park. I am always so floored by the quality & value. Today I was told to try the carne guisada and it did not disappoint, perfectly tender and packed with savory deep flavor paired perfectly with a fragrant fresh tortillas, 2 sides, and a drink for $10??????? In THIS economy???? Houston and Austin can't compete. And thank god because if I lived close by I'd be 10x my size and still afford some eggs!! We have lived in Brownsville for 2 years and I can't believe we are just learning about this place. We ordered more food than needed because we wanted to try everything . I think next time we will order the same just without the chicken. OMG! Great BBQ in the RGV!!! Had a beef rib, brisket, pork belly burnt ends, pinto beans & brussel sprouts...everything was on point. Truthfully, it's a bit expensive, but my tastebuds were fully satisfied. Staff was helpful and friendly. It's a comfortable BBQ joint. Space inside is a premium, but plenty of room outside on a nice day with live music some evenings. Definitely will be back. I've visited about 20 of the Texas Monthly Top-50 BBQ spots this year and this has got to be a top 2 that I've visited so far. This was an incredibly good spot. I loved the place, the staff, and the food. This was the package deal. I arrived at about 10:35am on New Year's Eve and no one was around but a lot of staff cars in the smallish lot. I waited a minute in my truck and then decided to just wait at the porch bench. At exactly 10:50 the second person showed up and by the time they opened there were maybe 15 people in line. Definitely paid to spend a little more time in line. I suspect that later, after the initial "rush", that it would drop to a normal line. Inside, you walk just a couple steps and start ordering. They have a lot of folks helping to make it flow. Everyone there was in a great mood and rocking their work. I think the main thing that strikes me with these Top-50 spots is that they all have great teams working there. There's only a few tables inside, but a ton under cover outside. On the way out, it was a bit crowded as it was one narrow in/out shared by people eyeing me with envy that I was ahead of them! I started out with the sausage. I had the Chili Piquin Cheddar sausage. It actually came with two sliced links, not one - so that was a pleasant surprise. With the first bite, I was just in the "oh wow, this is good" mood. First smokey, then snap, then savory & spicy meaty sausage. This was just great. Almost too hot for me, but after a few bites to become acquainted we were old friends. Next up were the Pork Ribs. These were sweet and peppery and cooked just perfectly. They were a top ribs that I've had anywhere. If I were to suggest just one item, this would be it. I haven't been a pork rib fan until I started my journey to try all the Top-50, but this has made me a convert. Finally, I had some of the brisket. Really, really good. Definitely a top-3 of any that I've had. Not as distinct as the ribs, but these were cooked by someone who knows what they are doing and enjoy doing it. I also added a couple sides. For starters I went with the potato salad. It was the most "down to earth" level item of all the things I ordered. It was very good, probably perfect, but there usually isn't much variety in potato salad anyway. So if you want a great side - this would work for you. The all around stand out for me, though (and this is tough considering how good the meats were) was the creamed corn. Yes, the lowly, humble creamed corn. As a kid it was always a treat to me when my mom opened a can of creamed corn. I loved the stuff. Usually, when I order it, it's often the same can with some ingredients added. This was an explosion of originality. I felt like Anton Ego on Ratatouille when one bite sucked me back to my mother's love & serving of creamed corn. A tear may have come to my eye. The corn tasted like it was cut from the cob, not the can. The sweetness was truly a cooked ingredient with the cream. This was home made creamed corn!! I never had it this fresh. The people attending us were very kind and sweet. Their indoor seating is extremely fresh for those hot days you don't want to sit outside. The food was delicious but my critique is the brisket (for me) had too much seasoning. Not my style but the meat of it was juicy and soft. The loaded mash, tasted to cheesy/creamy. Made a visit to Teddy's a toward the end of February with my Dad after knowing about it for a long time and had a spectacular visit. Food was great, service was full of smiles, and they have a great bbq vibe going both inside and outside. The young lady who took our order recommended both the green chile chorizo sausage and the brussels sprouts and they were both fantastic. Brisket was everything Texas brisket should be. Driving around Texas eating BBQ on the Texas Monthly Top 50 so when down in the RGV, had to stop at Teddy's Barbecue. Pulled up to Teddy's on a Sunday around 10:50am which was perfect as they open at 11am till sold out. We went inside and talked to some of the employees as they were very nice & friendly. They told us the Sunday special was a rack of pork ribs and that the brisket would be ready in a few. So the process here is you order they cut and weigh in front of you. You pay and leave the counter with your delicious food on a tray. They have indoor and outdoor dining which was perfect as we chose to dine inside. We got too much food as it all looked delicious. The good thing was that all the food was delicious!!! We got brisket, sausage, pork rib & BEEF rib! Sides of rice, beans, potato salad and twice baked potato...yummy and the big treat for a Sunday was that they had FREE BEER in a can. We ate we boxed up our leftovers and then we went outside to play some corn hole. All the food here is delicious. The ambiance is warm and friendly like the people that own and run this place. Another bbq spot we hit up for this Memorial Day Weekend Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ Extravaganza trip was in Weslaco, TX at Teddy's Barbecue and let me tell y'all that this joint did not disappoint in the slightest! We showed up Saturday May 29th at about noon. There were just a few people ahead of us in line and most of the restaurant was pretty packed! Fortunately nothing was sold out either. There's was nothing at all I didn't enjoy here! Everything was pretty top notch! I would put this joint in the Top 10-20 easily! The brisket was melt in your mouth fantastic. It had a profound smoke ring and a perfect bark that had distinctive flavor to it. I was in brisket heaven. The ribs were massive. The meat had a great pull. Nice pink smoke tones happening on the meat too. Also, not a lot of gristle on the end of the rib bones as well. Very very good! The pork belly burnt ends were also seriously on point. The meat to fat ratio on the pork belly was damn near perfect! Great seasoning. Nice sweetness. Good smoke. Nailed it. Smoked turkey was a cut above average, definitely not dry at all but a tinge on the bland side. One of my favorite surprises was the Péquin Cheddar sausage! Such a nice departure from the standard Jalapeño cheddar sausage. The sausage had a great casing, wasn't dry, had specks of red péquin chilies inside and was oozing cheddar. Definitely recommend. Sides time. The fried Brussels sprouts is a definite must. You don't see that being offered at many bbq joints and there's was definitely gastropub quality. Crispy and tossed in a sweet drizzle. Their potato salad was on the mustard side of the flavor spectrum, which I prefer. The Bernie Mac (mac and cheese) was pretty middle of the pack for me. Also, I do enjoy bbq sauce, but strangely not with my bbq lol. I just want to make a note that Teddy's makes amazing bbq sauce. Not photographed is their Smash Burger and Tater Tots. I saw it posted on previous menus but they didn't have it on their menu the day we were there. So I asked politely if they were serving their smash burgers and they replied sure why not, and made my wife one. They were out of fries but brought out some of the best tater tots we ever had. But let me tell you, this smash burger was off the charts! Second best I had at a bbq joint (first place going to Dayne's). One of the best burgers I've had in a very long time! I hope that if you live nowhere near Weslaco, Teddy's Barbecue gives you a reason to get in your cars and make the drive down! 100% worth it! read more
