Bruce is himself a master technician, and has competent staff, who always work diligently to present options that fit different budgets. He stands behind his work 100%, and provides very good estimates on time and pricing. What he quotes is what you pay, there are no hidden charges. In an age where good car mechanics are hard to find, Technical Auto Repair stands out for high quality of service. He also does factory-recommended services far more inexpensively than local dealerships. I cannot recommend his outfit too highly. About the only thing to note is that the shop is closed on weekends. Don't bring your car here, brought my car there to get maintenance and repair for check engine light, it was a simple problem and they claimed they fixed it. After 24 hours the light comes back on. I bring the car one more time and again after a day the light comes back on. I drop off the car one last time, they claimed to have fixed an issue the car never had, they also missed a big oil leak even though I paid for a full inspection, the car sat for almost a week with zero work done to it. Now my car won't turn on. Don't bring your car here. read more

This place is a scam. They robbed multiple people that I know who came in to have simple fixes done and then a month or two later a bigger problem occurs due to poor initial service they did. They didn't check coolant levels after spending $900 on repairs. It's almost as if they intentionally perform trash service in order to get customers coming back. I would highly avoid using this auto repair shop. My anger and hatred has never existed to this level due to a companies practices but Technical Auto is #1 on my most hated local OC company. read more

I took my car to Technical Auto Repair (TAR) because it was overheating. I was told that I needed a new water pump, thermostat and drive belt Bottom line $865..... of which $562.50 was labored cost. I picked my car up on that Friday.... Drove straight home (3 miles) Saturday less than 7 miles.... Sunday I got on the freeway heading to San Diego and 30 miles out the car began to overheat..... per the temperature warning light. Although the car did not appear to be overheating when I pulled over and looked under the hood. I didn't chance making that trip. I returned home pulling over several more times on the 30 miles back home. Needless to say I was back at the shop on Monday. This time I was told I needed a new radiator..... another $774.38 ....$500 in labor cost..... less than a week later my check engine light came on ..... before I could find out what it came on for .... It went off. It was on for about 8 miles. The next day the car started the car started jumping / jerking / choking.... I told Charles (the receptionist) what I was experiencing. He said "did it overheat?" I said no but it's jerking (I demonstrated the jerking motion for him) again he said "did it overheat?" I repeated the same thing and so did he ..... That conversation went nowhere. A few days later the jerking had gotten worse. On that Saturday after I got off work, I went to TAR ... they were closed. So I went to American Tire Depot..... I demonstrated to them as I had done for Charles. John, at ATD said that it sounded like a transmission issue. He told me that they didn't do transmission work there. He recommended that I go to Angels El Toro Transmission. They too were closed that day. I wasn't able take my car to them until Tuesday. A diagnosis cost $180. As it turns out it was my transmission. My transmission was slipping, because it was low on transmission fluid. As a direct result of the hose connections from the radiator. The brand new .... Less than 2 weeks old ....$800 radiator. I was told by Michael at AETT to take my car back to TAR to have the hoses replaced or repaired. Which my result in replacing the radiator..... again. I took my car back to TAR and encountered someone other than Charles the regular receptionist. He knew immediately what the issue was with the hoses. I told him that I had spoken to Charles about the issue before I subsequently ended up at the transmission shop. He said "that's Charles" Upon my return to pick up my vehicle, which this time there no additional charges. This time Charles was there. I tried to have a respectful conversation with him about how I felt I was due the cost of my diagnostic service, due to their negligence, as it pertains to the radiator hoses. He asked me why I hadn't come back to them about the issue. I told him, that I was told it was a transmission issue and therefore I took it to a transmission shop. I further reminded him, about our conversation about the car a few days following the replacement of the radiator. I quoted his own words back to him to jog his memory "did it overheat?" Not once during that initial conversation did he say bring it back in for the 3rd time in less than a month to fix what we should have fixed in the first place. Charles acted as though he personally did me a favor by not charging me for a service I had already paid for. He became indignant, when I told him that I felt as though I had been ripped off. Simply because I asked to be reimbursed for having to pay for a diagnostic test that I never should have to have done if they (TAR) had properly repaired my car in the first place. Charles was arrogant and he is clearly not a mechanic..... He acted as though I had caused him harm in some way by telling him that I was an unsatisfied customer. He said that the owner has never refunded or compensated anyone before. And he said maybe they are not the shop for me. Well that was the only thing he said that I definitely agreed with. There was no discussion about any sort of compensation, such as a future oil change or discount on future services. And unless the owner actually reads this review, he may never know how unsatisfactory his mechanic team and receptionist treat their customers. With that being said, because of their mechanical negligence I can and will not recommend TAR to anyone I know. Potential customers beware!!!! read more

Diagnosed and repaired a front end noise on my 2016 VW jetta....Dealer was unable to resolve( they claimed a bent rear axle, when in fact the control arm bushings were shot. Two other shops tried and failed...Very experienced mechanics, unfortunately no appts but not a big deal at all. read more

I have been there a few times now and had a big problem with my 05 Mini and the engine computer on the original visit. It took him time to figure out what was the best way to go. Even Irvine Mini Dealer Repair Dept. didn't want to deal with it!.. that's pretty shameful in my opinion. Bruce didn't give up he was diligent and successful. He spent more time than he charged me for. Very fair about pricing and definitely people of integrity. The place is immaculate. All the best shops were stumped, even the famous Renato Benz specialist. fortunately, Craig and Bruce were able to crack the mystery with their famous DAS code scanner and fix the problem. I brought my car here after the EZ Lube next door recommended this place to me. I was hesitant to take a recommendation from EZ Lube - so I quickly popped on Yelp to check this place out - pleasantly surprised! I might be a bit old school and think that every car repair shop is trying to rip me off, but what can I say. I was pleasantly surprised with the folks at Technical Auto Repair. Not only were they able to attend to my car same-day (w/o an appointment), but they were also able to do and complete all the repairs. No need to wait around for parts, etc. like usually occurs at the dealer. In first thing in the morning, and car was ready by 3:00 p.m.! I was also pleasantly surprised by their prices. I rang my dealer to get an alternate quote from them, and they came in about $250 higher. If something does go wrong with my car again in the future, I will definitely be taking it here. read more

I have a very rare vehicle, a 99 Tahoe factory 6.5. I called around a few places and no one was familiar with the diesel, unless I had to drive a distance that I really didn't want to drive. So I called TA, and spoke with Craig. Craig was friendly and said that they were familiar with a factory 6-5. Also, it's close to my house. When I brought "Eunice" in, Craig gave me a small tour of the shop and was impressed with the tools and the bays they had. These guys were slammed with cars, this was good and bad. Good because if they're this busy, it means that they must know what they're doing, bad because I was afraid how long it would take to get my rig back. So I left my Eunice there for the day and Bruce diagnosed her with a bad EGR solenoid. Unfortunately, since they were so busy, it took awhile to get to repair her, but my gut told me to trust TA, and I'm glad I did. Bruce did a great job and got Eunice road worthy, no more black smoke! And the price was very fair and reasonable. I'm happy that my Eunice has a reputable and honest tech. So I highly recommend this place for quality and integrity, however, there's a line, be patient and it'll be worth your time, and TA will give you that piece of mind. read more

Don't bother to make an appointment with this company. I only needed an oil change and they promised they could do it while I waited and it would take an hour. Came back an hour later and it was still sitting in the parking lot untouched. Craig said that they were really busy and couldn't do it and could I take an Uber home!! I was referred to this company by another repair facility that felt Technical would be able to help me out. I wish I could say what an amazing company they are , but I never got the chance to find out. I called on a Friday and made an appointment for Tuesday morning first thing. I get there and Craig asks if he could keep it for a couple of days, to program a sunroof? He said he would try to have it looked at that day as was only a programing issue. Never heard anything Tuesday OR Wednesday, I figured I would give them Thursday morning to give me an update. I finally called Craig at noon and he said the owner had my keys and paperwork and felt he was getting ready to look at it. I told Craig to let me know for sure or I would come by and get my truck. I never heard back from him and decided to swing on by and find out what gives. I pull up and see that my truck was NEVER moved, which also means it was in the parking lot and not inside protected. 2.5 days and they didn't touch it and NO communication. Very unprofessional, all Craig would say is too many cars and he is sorry. Side note, I never heard any cars being worked on both times I was there, kinda strange. read more

I had a great first experience with Technical Auto Repair. I took a used car that I intended to purchase there for an inspection. At first I was a little bit put off because they charged slightly more than other places for this service ($100), but I was in a pinch and just needed to get it done. That said, it was well worth the money. Upon arrival, I was asked if this was my first time there. I said yes and was given a tour of their garage and given general information about the business. I don't think I've ever been to a mechanic who has done this. It was very nice. They also have a spacious and clean waiting area. They have complimentary coffee, water, WIFI, and power outlets to charge devices. On to the actual inspection. Whenever I purchase a used vehicle (whether it's by owner or by dealership) I take it to an independent mechanic for inspection. In most of my experiences doing this, the shop uses at an opportunity to make a sales pitch to me about what I need to do to the vehicle blah blah blah rather then just giving me a list of the good and the bad. Technical Auto Repair was very thorough and honest in there assessment of the vehicle. Never once did I feel like they were trying to get more money out of me, they were just providing the service that I had paid for. The only other Auto shop I have been to where that is also the case is H&A Auto (Which I still highly recommend if you have a Honda or Acura and live further North in OC). All in all, I had a great experience here. The staff was very knowledgeable and honest, and their facility and waiting area were head and shoulders above most Auto mechanic shops I've been to. In a world where customer service is almost non-existent, I found an automotive service provider who has restored my faith. When the engine in my 2009 Hyundai Sonata blew, I took my car to Technical Auto, on a friend's recommendation. Craig took a look at it and gave me the cost for a new engine. He did not charge me for the diagnosis but instead said he'd rather see me put the money toward the repair or a new car. But, beyond that, Craig advised me to work the issue back through Hyundai Corporation. Craig's experience and wisdom paid off because Hyundai agreed to completely rebuild the engine without any cost to me.
