If I were being super picky, I like at some places when they put it on the grill for a bit and the outside of the tortilla gets a little bit browned/crispy. This one was softer/more doughy. We wanted nearby, and we wanted cheap. Tacos + downtown Aurora = a sure bet! I came here with my parents on a Saturday afternoon. Despite the mostly Hispanic presence, menus are in both English & Spanish, and our waitress spoke very clear English. Don't fear, my gringos and gringas! This casual diner serves legit, authentic Mexican food. It's family owned, which is clear from the second the young boy dropped off chips & salsa at our table. The steak tacos, with cilantro & onion (of course!) and the chile relleno were fantastic. I can't explain how the salsas took the flavors to a whole new level. Chips and salsa are complimentary, and this salsa is the BEST salsa I've had at any Mexican establishment. The salsa was made of freshly chopped tomatoes, onions, jalapeno, and cilantro, and wasn't watery at all. It was definitely muy caliente, my dad had tears in his eyes. Food here is super cheap. The 3 of us ate well for less than $30. There's a lot of street parking available, which is super convenient if you need to take it to-go. There are a lot of places to get tacos in Aurora, but I'm not sure any of them can beat Tecalitlan. read more

Went in for breakfast once, and lunches and a rare dinner. Good, authentic, and tasty. The place is mostly booths, definitely average decor inside but the food is steamy hot and spicy enough. They also do the Aurora festivals with a simplified menu. That fare is excellent, They usually have a line at their tent. I always get in that line during the festivals. I've been eating at Tecalitlan since before I even moved to Aurora. This is my go-to Mexican restaurant in a city full of them. To me it's like that favorite diner: It's always reliable, there's several great items on the menu and no matter what you order it's going to be good. Not the fanciest, maybe not the best in the world, but always consistent, always friendly, always good food and service at a good price. It's family owned, family operated and there is very low employee turnover so you know they're being treated well and that you'll see familiar faces on return visits. Their homemade corn tortillas are maybe the best I've had anywhere. They're so good I crave them; it seems like anything would taste good served in them. Free chips and salsa when you dine in served with homemade salsa and pico de gallo. They have Mexican Coke with real sugar and also a selection of Mexican beers. Good margaritas and tasty horchata. Maybe the best steak tacos and burritos in the area. I never find chunks of fat mixed in with the chopped steak that you find at some places. They're juicy without dripping with grease. I also like the tortas. Good sopes too. Great juevos rancheros if you're they're for breakfast. The soups are really good and homemade with big chunks of meat still on the bone. The pozole soup is my favorite. As you can see, I've tried many items on the menu and everything has always been good, breakfast, lunch or dinner. The decor is not fancy, a mix of tables and leather booths that make it feel like a diner. Probably hasn't changed in awhile but the place is always clean. There's a jukebox that has Mexican music and a TV that sometimes has on futbol games or telenovelas. It's an authentically Mexican place in a good way. I think it's just fear of something different or the unknown that send some people to the pseudo-Mexican restaurants by the mall instead of an authentic place like this. There's nothing to fear here! Your servers will be bi-lingual and dining in the restaurant you will find a mix of Spanish and English speakers, blue collar and office workers, couples and families. We love Teca. Jalisco's is our standard for Mexican fast food, and this is where we go for a sit-down chips-and-salsa on the table meal. The food is very yummy, both to the Mexican-born palette and the decidedly pasty-skinned white girl (that would be me) and my parents. Word of caution: Every salsa on the table has kick, if you're sensitive to that. I always get the huevos con papas, breakfast-time or no, and they are always delicious. The place is, in my opinion, a little more authentic of an experience than you'll get at other Mexican restaurants, which I always feel are "hamming it up" with the crazy decor and mariachi band and woman who makes guac at your table. Which means that sometimes the staff doesn't have a lot of English. This does not bother me because I'm trying to practice anyway, and they have never seemed annoyed by my feeble attempts to inadvertently mangle their language -- usually they giggle along with my Mexican fiance and help me on the pronunciation. Many of the servers are fully bilingual, just depends. The only knock down for a star is that service can sometimes be a bit slow, especially weekend evenings. It has never made us late for a Paramount show, but I can see where some people might be annoyed. As for the commenter who said he waited forever to get a check -- they don't ever drop the check on the table. When you're finished, you just go up and pay. If you're not finished, you flag down the waitress and ask for another round of beers. Which, as a final note, I swear I have seen them serve by the bucket at, like, 10 a.m. on a Sunday. I have been eating out only to get taco meals at the places suggested on Yelp. This was a new place for me and the first time I have visited. I visited at 3:00PM on a Tuesday, so I was the only customer and service was great and friendly. I got two Al Pastor and one Carne Asada taco with rice and beans. I can heartily suggest the salsa, it is great! The taco meal was very good, but didn't take me anywhere special (despite the handmade tortillas). Great Mexican restaurant in downtown Aurora. We went there for dinner on a weeknight, both street parking outside and seating inside were ample. Someone in another review mentions they make their own tortillas in house here, and I believe it, as my tacos were nuts. They had good salsa too, but their chips seemed pretty average. Docked one star because this very much is not a single Yelp dollar sign taco place. We got a order of guacamole, a taco dinner, and a tostada which was $30 (with tip) out the door. Let me start correcting the address since I looked all over for it and I couldn't find it, the correct address is: 35 S Broadway Aurora IL 60506 It's right on the corner or Broadway and Downer St. The service here is really good and all the servers are bilingual which is really nice since my family speaks more English than Mexican even though I'm Mexican, Food; I order Birria and its is the best one I had so far here in aurora, all the other places cooked their meet aside the broth of the dish and then they added together this place does it all together and it chafes the flavor to be delicious authentic dish and the meat its a lot more tender, their size of this dish is smaller than the other restaurants but definitely worth to try it they also have homemade corn tortillas but they make them with yellow corn that usually has a stronger smell than the regular white corn( if you are Mexican or know something about cooking Mexican food you'll understand what I'm talking about) I do not particularly care for them but they also have flour tortillas that are better than the corn, overall it's a really nice small place with good food and great service, I recommend it to try it. read more

My margarita was strong and tasty. I don't remember entirely what we ordered. Tacos, sopas, beans, rice, chips salsa, guac, and tamales. The tamales were great. Their hot sauce there is on point. It's so spicy and yummy. My sopas that came out were drenched in goodness and food. It was just so tasty here. I think we would come back again. It was quite busy as we came during lunch time. This place is probably one of the best Mexican place I've ever eaten at. The staff is sweet, and the restaurant itself is nice and clean. They start you off with chips and salsa which is ridiculously delicious! The salsa is spicy, but so so good! Once you start eating the salsa you won't be able to stop..we asked for seconds and the lady was more than willing to give us more. For my entree I had the cheese enchiladas which came with lettuce, tomatoes, and rice (usually it comes with beans, but I asked for all rice). The enchiladas were perfectly made; cheese was perfect, tortillas were nice and soft, but not too soft that they become mushy. The rice was also cooked to perfection.
