My husband…read moreand I have had a lot of cool dates but this was by far the most engaging, interesting, and memorable. A few days in Leavenworth provided just enough time for us to create the best souvenirs we've ever had. Glassblowing sessions are available by appointment on Saturdays and then your projects have to cool (they are over 1000 degrees!) so you get to pick them up that Tuesday or have them mailed to you. My husband was a natural but I needed a little more help- Craig and Jori were both very patient and gracious and provided all of the coaching and support needed to make sure that my project turned out- you can be confident they will work with you to ensure that you are safe and successful no matter your skill or ability level. They are always willing to step in and they have such a wealth of expertise to share- we learned so much from them and it was such a unique activity- the equipment required is thousands of dollars so it's truly once in a lifetime. In addition to the glassblowing experience, they also have a gallery of their own work available to view or purchase. All of it is gorgeous and I have a much greater appreciation for it after seeing how intensive the process is to make something small and "simple" in comparison. You have a few options of projects to choose from and they rotate by season. Jori told us that "everything tastes better out of a handmade glass" so that's what we went with this time though I'm hoping we will have the opportunity to come back and make something else in the future. This was genuinely such a great value for the experience, the products themselves, and the memory we'll talk about for years to come- an absolute must if you're in Leavenworth!

On the hot days of summer, Howard Hopkins Memorial Pool is a great place to come and swim a few…read morelaps or splash around as an individual or a family/group. During August and September, especially, when temps are in the 90s and 100s (degrees Fahrenheit) the pool is a perfect reprieve from the heat. The perfect recipe here is the hot days that are also windy. Because the pool is at the base of the Cascade Mountains it doesn't get as much natural airflow/wind normally. However, on the windy and hot days, the wind provides a cooling mechanism while sitting out on a lawn chair on the pool deck. There are some parking spots reserved for patrons of the pool in a parking lot bordering the pool. The rest of the lot is open to everyone, so it can get a bit crammed during the summer and on busy days during prime-time tourism season in Leavenworth. If staying not too far from the pool, I would recommend walking if possible.

Mary-Jo really understood my husband and I and helped guide us towards the priorities for the kind of birth we really wanted to have. During labor and delivery, wow oh wow, I could NOT have done that without her by my side. All of her encouragement, guidance, empowering and calming words, and comforting actions helped me all throughout early and active labor, and especially the transition phase when I was birthing my baby. She was monumental in this whole process and we wouldn't have had the comforting, safe, secure, and peaceful delivery we had if it wasn't for her. My husband and I are immensely glad we chose her as our doula. It's a decision we will always treasure. Thank God you were our doula, Mary-Jo! Mark (husband): Husbands, get Mary-Jo as your doula for your wife, period. If you want to support your wife 100% emotionally, physically, spiritually, get a doula and make sure to get Mary-Jo. Yes, be there for your wife and serve her with all that you can throughout the pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum. But honestly though, us dudes can only support our wives so much. In my experience, there's a certain point where you've done all that you can, but your wife just needs another woman's support that you just can't provide as a man. That's where Mary-Jo steps in; she'll provide that holistic support for your wife that only a doula can bring. My wife and I had a traumatic experience in our first pregnancy when we tried to do it all on our own without a doula. Now with our second child, we had Mary-Jo and she made a world of a difference bringing such peaceful guidance and security for my wife and I. I got crabs in E-WA, and I want everyone else to get them, too…read more St. Joseph's Catholic School has several fundraisers throughout the year that involve food and *adult beverages* (to loosen up the wallet for raffle tickets and auctions, of course), but the Crab Feed (always in March) is a MUST. It doesn't matter what your faith-wise leanings are, you just need to like crab. I have been around the Seafood Festival block a time or two, and I know from crab feed. They are on their game, 100%. Here's why: For $30 (same price in 2010 and 2011), you get a starfish stamp on your wrist, 2 drink tokens in your hand, and a seat at the kids table. Once seated, you will be offered salad and spaghetti to go with the giant basket of bread that was already there, waiting for you. I pass, saving room for the reason I'm here in the first place: crab. Then it begins...you have these cards, kind of like bidding paddles at Sotheby's, except these say "CRAB" and you don't have to sell your kidney to afford the merchandise. You hold up the card. Stealthily, the Bucket Brigade show up, legs and claws overflowing from their containers. Trays of butter (the real deal) and cocktail sauce (horseradishy!) whiz by and you snag a cup or two. You devour buckets of crustaceans, create mountains of shells, and just as the last leg is lifted from the bucket you hold up the card again, and VOILA, more crabby goodness. Look out in the back parking lot and you'll see the Foodservice of America semi truck parked out there. THIS is what All You Can Eat Crab Feed means, people. Good beer (that's right, not just Bud Light and Corona, good microbrews plus Guinness. E-WA is stepping up their game) and decent wine available, you get one drink for each of your tokens. Or, go big, buy a pitcher of IPA for $12 or a bottle of wine for $15. And that's why you'll say to yourself, "I got crabs in E-WA, and I loved it!"
