Scrambling at the very last minute, I scoured Trip Advisor for a similar experience, and found Austin Detours. The tour was about to start, so I ran (yes, ran) through the 90+ degree Texas heat to arrive on time. My guide, David, was incredible, very interesting to listen to, and took us all around Austin. I really felt like I attained a better understanding for the city. He even took our picture at different spots, and the sweet treat was delightful. The only thing I didn't love was that the elder couple on the tour with me rambled about their political leanings, which I didn't agree with at all and I struggled to keep my mouth shut, but David did such a good job of delicately leading them off the topic on multiple occasions. Their tour is super reasonably priced, a value, really. I'd recommend them to anyone visiting Austin for the first time.

Shame on all of the tight people who were in this trip with us. And shame on you if you can't give a few bucks to your tour guide! (End bitch session) As most tours, what can make or break a tour is the guide. In this case, ours was great! I apologize that I can remember her name, but I did attach a picture. So if you get her, you'll be entertained, informed and happy when the tour is finished! On our vacation we also did a similar (but larger) trip in San Antonio, and this one (Austin) was way better. I'm sure the City of Austin would say it's because Austin is more interesting, which may be true! But I'll say the small group and fun guide made this the winner.

He has a lot of options that will work for any occasion. For our group we had a certain set of things we wanted to accomplish and Michael put together a custom experience for us that 100% delivered. Michael is fun, knowledgeable and professional. He was prepared with anything we could have asked for and when we asked for an audible he was able to accommodate with zero problems. I think it's also worth mentioning that his bus is immaculate, new and comfortable. That's a big deal when you spend a couple days traipsing around TX. I admit: I am not a person who uses travel agents on a regular basis, but when I learned that she lives in the area, I trusted her to plan our trip. We stayed in contact for months, going back & forth on email & text about preferences in the recommended numerous stops along the way, and when all was said & done, we had the trip of a lifetime planned. In the end, our stay in the Hill Country exceeded even the highest of expectations. A couple things to note, that were very much appreciated: 1) The personalization she put into the planning process. Kimberly asked our musical tastes, our food preferences, hotel preferences, etc. We stayed in boutique hotels, mostly, and Kimberly was very helpful in picking locations she felt we would like; she nailed it. 2) Her local knowledge. Kimberly hooked us up with a driver for a day of vineyard / winery tours - someone she has used before. Michael was an outstanding guide for us, and provided some of his own local-knowledge about good places to go and things to see that we otherwise may not have known about. He even stated that Kimberly had contacted him the morning of our tours to make sure everything was lined-up. How's that for service? She also is incredibly detail-orientated and is always thinking ahead to ensure that our travels go as smoothly as possible. We recently had a substantial delay when flying into Budapest, arriving at 3AM and were so pleasantly surprised when landing to see that Carly had been monitoring our flights, realized that the plane was coming in so late and arranged private travel to the hotel. We booked the "Eastside tour" w/ Hipside Peddler on Saturday, 11/14/2020 to celebrate my friends 40th birthday & we had so much FUN! This was my 1st time so I had no idea what to expect but I can say that I am so glad that we were able to safely celebrate my friend's milestone birthday during this time of pandemic craziness. Since sharing is caring here are a few of my "Helpful Tips", "FYIs", & "Likes"... FYI: *You will be peddling the same way you would if riding a bike so be mindful of your foot wear & you will be getting a mini workout while peddling. *There are mini fans above each seat that you can turn on, if needed. *The peddle boat driver does have a plexiglass barrier between him & the passengers as a COVID safety precaution & the peddle boat itself is all open w/out any walls. *You can tip your peddling boat driver in cash & via Venmo. *The "Eastside" tour is 2 hours long & we made 3 separate stops at different local bars for 15-20 mins each so you can use the restroom, cool off, take a few pictures w/ your peeps and/or buy a drink while relaxing at each bar. Our awesome peddle boat driver was Matt & he also made a 4th stop at an Italian ice truck. *Each passenger must submit a liability waiver & you can do it electronically. Once your tour has been booked, you will get the waiver emailed to you. Helpful Tip(s): *BEVERAGES~I recommend that you bring your own ice chest already filled w/ ice & beverages (no glass containers are allowed) & there is an open area in the middle of the peddle boat for ice chest storage. *FOOD~only snacks are allowed & I suggest you bring snacks that are easy to munch on since you will be peddling while eating them. ( ex: mini bags of pretzels, individually wrapped cookies) *MUSIC~The peddle boat does have a stereo system that is very loud & has a usb that you can connect your phone to for music. I highly recommend that you create a music playlist of songs that help set the vibe that you're going for. I made a playlist using Spotify of all the songs I wanted to play. Lastly, I just wanted to give a huge shout out to Matt, who was our p.d driver because he really did a GREAT job of explaining "all things peddle boat" :) & putting us at ease so we could fully enjoy ourselves. He was very personable, patient and flexible with how we spent the allotted time. It was a great outing and a very different experience! On the evening I went it was just our smaller group on the tour so we had full control of the jams, cooler and schedule. We definitely held up traffic a bit when on some of the main roads but the motorists and bystanders we came across waved and cheered us on. Thankfully there is a motor on board so it's not necessary to be fully exerting yourself peddling. Recommend for a fun activity. Ask for Max!
