The swimming pool is one of the cleanest in the State, so safe in fact you can drink it...not that you'd want to do it intentionally anyway but it won't make you sick after a few accidental gulps. This summer it will be open Mon - Fri 6.00am - 8.00pm and at $3.00 per entry it's one of the cheapest in SA. The pool is not undercover so slip, slop, slap or at least go when the sun isn't at it's fiercest. Lanes are segregated to cater for swim schools, coaching, lap swimming and for generally having a fun splash. It also offers a full gym inside the complex but for futher details check out the website or phone.

Out of school term the mornings are filled with life saving lessons, and during term there are learn to swim classes in the afternoons, but the rest of the time you'll pretty much own the pool. The staff are friendly, the prices are from another era ($4 students/concession), there's a gym and a shower block inside and plenty of parking (on the street is free). This review will no doubt be close to my heart as my babies learned to swim like sharks at Balyana…read morePool. There are about 4-5 swimming schools conducted here over the week, ranging from Susan Klus, Panorama Swim School and baby dedicated swim schools with the likes of Ezy-Swim Swimming School and Judy Carboncini Swim School. When I first started my kids, we opted for Panorama Swim School only to realise that the boys weren't developing their swimming strokes. Downside of Panorama Swim School is they introduced floaties for the kids and they seem to be using them forever, even after 3 terms here. Not seeing any progress, I pulled the boys out and upon a friends' recommendation, went for Susan Klus. We never looked back sinced. Jurgen and Susan run this wonderful swimming classes at Balyana and in absence of floaties, they emply good swimming teachers and coaches and I am very proud to announce the boys can now swim without me hovering over them like an eagle, staring at their every movement. Jurgen and Susan also train swimmers in the national swimming league..if you ever need any tips or direction on swimming matters, diving etc, talk to Jurgen. As all swimming classes, choose one where the teachers will work for you and develop a good coaching relationship for your child. The pool is also popular for nearby Clapham Primary School summer swimming classes and the disability community who attends therapy classes here.

The best thing about Payneham Pool is that you can almost always get a lane to yourself for lap swimming (as long as you don't go during swim carnivals obviously), I like being able to rock up at my leisure and have a lane of my own. This place has enough room for kids and adults to swim and have a good day without fearing for their lives: this is not so much the case at the big leisure centres that are packed with madness and slides. The staff here are really nice (as you don't dive over the lane ropes, don't do that), and there's heaps of shaded grass areas to hang out in. It's a beautiful day and a nice relaxed vibe, dive on in.

I have had heaps of summer holiday days here with friends where the pool gives out fun equipment like inner tubes, beach balls, volleyball nets and floating mats. It's not too busy usually, and there is plenty of outside grass area with some benches to chill out. But bring the sunscreen because there isn't much shade. Now that the aquatic centre had been improved, as well as Marion swimming centre with watersides and more pools etc, payneham doesn't receive much attention, and it could use some upgrading itself.
