The best thing about Payneham Pool is that you can almost always get a lane to yourself for lap swimming (as long as you don't go during swim carnivals obviously), I like being able to rock up at my leisure and have a lane of my own. This place has enough room for kids and adults to swim and have a good day without fearing for their lives: this is not so much the case at the big leisure centres that are packed with madness and slides. The staff here are really nice (as you don't dive over the lane ropes, don't do that), and there's heaps of shaded grass areas to hang out in. It's a beautiful day and a nice relaxed vibe, dive on in.

I have had heaps of summer holiday days here with friends where the pool gives out fun equipment like inner tubes, beach balls, volleyball nets and floating mats. It's not too busy usually, and there is plenty of outside grass area with some benches to chill out. But bring the sunscreen because there isn't much shade. Now that the aquatic centre had been improved, as well as Marion swimming centre with watersides and more pools etc, payneham doesn't receive much attention, and it could use some upgrading itself.

This summer it will be open Mon - Fri 6.00am - 8.00pm and at $3.00 per entry it's one of the cheapest in SA. The pool is not undercover so slip, slop, slap or at least go when the sun isn't at it's fiercest. Lanes are segregated to cater for swim schools, coaching, lap swimming and for generally having a fun splash. It also offers a full gym inside the complex but for futher details check out the website or phone.

The place has large grassed areas and plenty for the kids including two fun water slide options. The smaller pool is only about 1m deep and is very warm. There is also a toddlers play area with plenty of shade. Waterworld caters for kids parties and they are guaranteed to have a great day. This place underwent a refurbishment around 2 years ago and it was worth the effort and $ as the facilities are now an excellent standard. Even the change rooms and shower facilities are nice. At $6 for a adult casual visit it is great value. During the day it is often quiet unless there is a large school booking. As per my tip; sometimes it pays to check their website or phone first to confirm lap lanes are available. I just wish this place was open all year around but unfortunately it is seasonal. The 25 metre lap pools are a good depth and wide enough lanes. The diving pool is fantastic for water running and for a more casual swim. The change rooms are clean and well-looked after. The members only change room is smaller and more private, and each cubicle has a soap dispenser, which is handy if you forget things as much as I do. The spas and saunas are great. There are two large spas, which I would go in more often if they weren't mostly filled with overweight old men or kissing couples. Nothing can keep me out of the sauna though. They have a dry and a wet sauna. I frequent the dry sauna, as it is just the right temperature that you can stay in it for a reasonable time. You're sweating like crazy, but it only becomes uncomfortable after about 10 minutes for me, which is longer than I can normally bear it. This is a well planned and set out facility, with plenty of showers and drinking fountains. I only wish I was a lot younger and could play in the kid's pools, because they look fantastic.

As is the usual practice with these sorts of places, the lap pool has an area cautioned off for actual lap swimming, (although in all likelyhood you'll get stuck behind some granny if you actually try and swim laps) and an area for free swimming. The main attraction of the Norwood Swimming pool, or at least the main attraction when I was a kid, was the springy diving board at the end of the pool. I can't believe they haven't made that illegal yet, and very happy they haven't at the same time.

A fast lane, slow/medium (3 lanes wide for overtaking) and a recreation lane for those who don't want to do laps. This is by far the best pool in Adelaide. Park atmosphere with a great 1960s style. In the 3 years I have been swimming here on a daily basis I have only had to slow down for people on maybe one lap every couple of visits to the pool. What is best about this place is when you go on a below 35 degree day after 4pm - There will be no-one there. I have had the entire olympic pool to myself... couldn't get any better then that.

It's outdoors, so you might not be able to get as far away from the sun as you might like. In fact, that's my biggest complaint about the place: there's very little shade. The burns you get from the sun's reflect off the water are just as bad as those you get from direct sun exposure. But so long as you wear a healthy dose of sunscreen, you'll be free to enjoy this pocket of paradise to its fullest. Although, be warned, kiddies: as I left, I witnessed a teenage very obviously urinate in the toddlers pool before he left the centre. He was walking determinedly for the exit before squatting down, sitting with a look of simultaneous pleasure and exertion for some moments, and getting back up again to leave with his parents. Eww.

I used to only work a 4 day week so on my day off I would go to a nearby gym then come here for swimming training then stop and get stuff to make a nice salad wrap for lunch when I got home. It was my fitness day. It was always easy swimming here. Simple to park, pay your money and do your thing. Usually I didn't even have to share a lane but if I did have to the others I shared with were always courteous and easy to share with. In the earlier morning sessions it may be a little busier. I found in the middle of the day most of the other people were older people walking or doing exercises in the water for back or kneww issues or for recovery from such issues. If I am going ot put on bathers and swim I like to do it somewhere that I do not feel self conscious and this place has definitely been good to me over the years. If it is a warm day it definitely get really hot and stuffy and steamy inside this pool though as it is a heated indoor pool. Not really a kids play pool at all but great for fitness.
