As well as the swimming centre with lessons and public times they also have a full gym / health club with creche facilities available. They have an aqua playgroup so you can get your little one acquainted with the water in a much calmer and more constant environment that the beach. They also have 2 of the coolest inflatables that go in the pool which kids and adults love the challenges of alike. They are so much fun for everyone. In addition the recreation centre side of it offers ballroom dancing, netball, volleyball, basketball, soccer, squash, roller skating and something I have never seen offered anywhere else - dodgeball! A friend of mine played netball here and was in an actual team but I know for dodgeball you can just go and they will put you in a team or use a couple of groups to make up a team. The kids think it's great fun, I love the fact it gets out some of their energy! They do some great roller skating events too and on the old school skates with 4 wheels, and no, they are not in one row! So much fun and being a government leisure centre all options here are a LOT cheaper than taking the kids elsewhere.

Trust me though you'll want to be in the water because swimming centers are by no means fun when your sitting in the humidity. There is also a gym, spa and sauna so really it is the complete package. Not a great place for professional swimming but good for children learning to swim and exercise. Expect to pay around $6 dollars for and adult and $5.20 for kids.

The complex contains many areas such as a health club, creche, shop, etc and the pool itself runs various programs and activities to suit all ages. If this is your thing and you enjoy keeping fit plus live close by then membership is probably the way to go and save some money. Families can join also but be aware the water slides are not included and will cost two dollars to go on each time, so this is one part which will add up quickly! Otherwise, the casual entry fee is reasonable for a brand new complex and if you won't be an active participant there is a $2.50 spectator entry fee. All in all a great complex operated by the YMCA. As an indoor heated pool no time of year can you use the excuse it's 'too cold'. Slides and playgrounds are targets for children and young families, and there are slow and medium lap lanes for those wanting gentle fitness. There are also dive pools though they were not dared by the cowardly reviewer. The cafe at the front serve a selection if foods more than suitable for lunch at competitive prices, though the coffee is not something I'd get a second time. Plenty of yellow shirted lifesavers patrol giving you a sense that they take your safety seriously.

They have Aqua Zumba classes which are really fun and the instructor is great. I often go to them while my mum does laps and my younger brother plays with the pool toys provided. Tip - do not trust the receptionist when you call she has not once given correct information over the phone. Things such as opening times, prices, when classes are on she has no idea what she's talking about. Also one time me and my brother went on a Tuesday afternoon and it was apparent they had put the chemicals in very recently as our eyes stung horribly for a week afterwards and the chemicals even hurt my brothers skin for a few days afterwards so I don't recommend going on Tuesdays. Of course I was there to support my daughter so I thought I knew what to expect but this is a really busy place. As you'd expect, the number of people using the pool is reflective of the quality of service and skills of the people involved. My daughter is quite shy and fearful of the water so it takes a special someone to help her feel calm. In all honesty, some staff do this better than others, but I never feel that she is at risk of being 'left behind' in the classes. Even if they let her learn at a slower rate, she is always made to feel part of the class. The only minor issues I have is that there's always a tousle for the seats for the onlookers so once you get one, don't move or someone will snatch it up. Regardless if you have everything you own on the seat to 'keep your place' some one is likely to take it anyway (happened to me today! Grrr!). I was pretty shocked when I heard the price but it does seem to be pretty reasonable when compared to other places. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Blue Dolphin to anyone!

The turn off sign on Oaklands Road is set amongst grape vines. The whole facility is a green oasis with a massive grassy space around the pools for summertime CHILLIN' shaded by the odd big tree. Facilities: *Olympic-sized pool (50m, 8 lanes) *Two shaded kiddy pools *60m water slide *Free BBQ *Kiosk *Lit for balmy evening swims Costs: Adults: $6.00 Kids: $4.90 Spectator: $2.50 You can also buy a season's pass (adult: $388, breakeven point: 65 visits), a 10-visit pass (adult: $53, save 70cents per go) or a 30-visit pass (adult: $156, save 80cents per go). You've got to be confident you'll live up to the high expectations of use you've set for yourself, or else forget about those tiny savings and hop on the non-commitment train - pay as you go! My only issue with the Marion Swimming Centre is that they're so damn enterprising (i.e. added costs). The waterslide is an additional $4.70 for 10 rides (or $11 for unlimited) and lockers are $4 for 2hrs. Boo. Open start of October until the end of March.

I CAN say, however, that I've been to the Marion Swimming Centre many a time, and, as I've grown and my desires and expectations have undergone the usual metamorphosis, I have always enjoyed my time here. One specific memory I have is of the slide. As a child I was wanting in... courage. For certain activities. There were a lot of things I'd do that other kids would never DREAM of doing, but I always struggled with the average and the mundane. I'm a little reluctant to report that my little sister, to whom I was the senior for several years, was less afraid of taking the water slide than I was. It took a lot of coaxing until I finally took it, where I learned (what I'd already expected) that it wasn't as bad as I feared it would be. Neither, however, was it as good as I was made to believe. The line's never worth it, readers (save for, perhaps, the first time). Whether you have the courage or not, stick to the pools. That's what you came here for, after all.

There are about 4-5 swimming schools conducted here over the week, ranging from Susan Klus, Panorama Swim School and baby dedicated swim schools with the likes of Ezy-Swim Swimming School and Judy Carboncini Swim School. When I first started my kids, we opted for Panorama Swim School only to realise that the boys weren't developing their swimming strokes. Downside of Panorama Swim School is they introduced floaties for the kids and they seem to be using them forever, even after 3 terms here. Not seeing any progress, I pulled the boys out and upon a friends' recommendation, went for Susan Klus. We never looked back sinced. Jurgen and Susan run this wonderful swimming classes at Balyana and in absence of floaties, they emply good swimming teachers and coaches and I am very proud to announce the boys can now swim without me hovering over them like an eagle, staring at their every movement. Jurgen and Susan also train swimmers in the national swimming league..if you ever need any tips or direction on swimming matters, diving etc, talk to Jurgen. As all swimming classes, choose one where the teachers will work for you and develop a good coaching relationship for your child. The pool is also popular for nearby Clapham Primary School summer swimming classes and the disability community who attends therapy classes here.

It's not the fanciest establishment around, and I question whether its popularity will go downhill now the big, impressive aquatic centre's opened down the road. However, it's a decent 25m pool, nicely heated, and has shower rooms without doors or barriers, so expect to see others and be seen in the nudie. They have a range of sessions between the opening times I've stated, from public lap swimming, to lessons, to aquarobics. I suggest you grab a timetable or check it out on the website. In a nutshell - go water babies!
