We first stayed here in May 2019 on the night my husband and I got engaged. We got engaged at the top of a multi-pitch rock climbing route in Rumney. Our families live far away, so we actually FaceTimed them from this Inn to share the news of our engagement with them. We went to The Last Chair next door for a celebratory dinner then had a lovely night at this Inn to enjoy our first night as an engaged couple. We came back to the Northeast last week for a wedding and spent a couple of days up in NH to do some hiking in the White Mountains. Now that it has been 5 years since our engagement, we thought it would be fun to stay here again to reminisce! We remembered Kevin right away--he is the most friendly and generous host. He makes you feel so welcome like you are family as soon as you arrive. We probably spent a couple hours talking with Kevin throughout our stay, he is just so wholesome and kind. He puts a lot of effort into adding special touches around the Inn to make it extra charming. Afternoon wine/cheese, a fridge filled with beer and waters, a coffee/tea station, freshly clipped roses in every room, chocolates and a cute quote on the bed, a guestbook to sign in your room, robes to wear. Not to mention the gourmet breakfast he makes for you in the morning! Ours was a fruit starter followed by homemade vanilla bean belgian waffles with hand carved local smoked bacon. There's also a hot tub outside that you can use. We came on a weeknight when the Inn wasn't very busy, so Kevin upgraded our room for free! We had such a lovely time here and really enjoyed coming back 5 years later. This place sets the bar high for a Bed & Breakfast--you get all the history (from the building to the stories of those who have lived there), beautiful grounds, a host with tremendous hospitality, and so many little things that add up to make this an unforgettable place to stay. Looking forward to our next visit when we are back in NH someday!

The "inn" is their home and you rent rooms in their home. That may be fine for some people but not…read moreothers, including myself. The caretakers live in the basement of the property. They will ask you all kinds of questions during your "stay". I specifically told them, because they are always around in their kitchen and living room, I was leaving my dog in my room while I went on a hike. They said they wanted to get him out and that it was OK for him to run around. Well, he is a small, delicate and rambunctious chihuahua that can easily, accidentally get hurt and I told them I wanted him left in my room. When I came back from my hike I discovered the owners had gone into my room as the door between the bathroom and room was left open (I had left with it closed) and the rugs were shifted. And my dog was not in the quarantined space I had created for him to be in while I was out of the room. How do I know what happened to him? The owners treat this inn as their home because that's what it is and apparently they will do whatever they want. At real hotels you can hang a Do Not Disturb sign on the door and not worry. If this place had signs to hang they would say We Will Enter Your Room Without Permission Even When You Ask Us Not To Because This Is Our Personal Home. According to New Hampshire law they should be making it clear that they live there prior to making a reservation so this needs to be reported. In response to Sheila- your comments to your negative reviews give insight into your character. If you truly do care about customer satisfaction you would make it clear on your website that you are renting out rooms in a home. That would ensure the comfort of all of your guests.

Many options but many with poor reviews. After a week of research was able to narrow the selection down to two places and the breakfast served here was the deciding factor. Booking as super easy on their web site. The Inn is located in a quiet area outside of the college town of Plymouth in Compton, NH a 5 minute drive to the arena and minutes from the highway made this the perfect location for our stay. Easy to find and ample parking made getting there easy. When we arrived we went to the entrance abutting the parking area. Travin answered the door, allowed us in from the cold and got our checking in under way, promptly checked in with in seconds of coming in. We were escorted to our room and each room we went through, Travin explained that we could make use of at anytime but to please be mindful of other guests sleeping. Up a narrow set of steps, being an old building from 1764, I would imagine they once were the servants staircase. We arrived to our room, key passed to us and we were on our own. Fast and efficient check in process. The room was fairly large for a queen bed and you can tell it is an older home but very well maintained. There as a small crack in the bathroom flooring, but very minor. We went out and met up with family and grabbed a pizza for our room. The room was well heated with no drafts which one would expect in such an old home. We slept very well, bed was comfortable. In the morning David greeted us and asked if we had a preference of where we wanted to eat! We were given a choice of the dining room or their lovely greenhouse porch. It was a beautiful day but a bit chilly. David was thoughtful enough to place a small space heater by our table to keep us warm, so wonderful! For breakfast we were not given a choice but recall Trevin asking if we liked eggs and bacon, absolutely! The eggs were baked with some cherry tomatoes halved and some light seasoning. He made this amazing bread stick. It was a croissant bread wrapped around a piece of bacon and baked off. Brushed with some Dijon and finished off with sesame seeds. YUM!! Not a crumb was left on our plates. Checking out was easy peasy, leave your key in an envelope on the dresser and your out! We really liked the town of Plymouth and will be back to explore some more. Alot of what a B and B has to offer starts with your hosts. Anthony met us in the driveway and immediately made us feel more like visiting family than like guests checking in. We walked in and while he told us about about how to get in and where to park, he also told us all about the charming house. I booked through Hotels.com and everything was in such good order that we never even had to look at paperwork. After having us put our pin in the house map, Anthony took us around through the house, showing us the cozy living room, the upstairs exercise room with treadmill, and brought us to our room. A high, pillowtopped queen size bed dominated the smallish room which was nicely appointed with decorative lamps, lithographs and and some home made cookies waiting on the nightstand. The private bath was spacious and included a jacuzzi style bathtub. When we asked, Anthony recommended a couple places for dinner, one of which we already had in mind, "The Common Man." We ran into him later that evening in the lounge, where he was entertaining other Cheney House guests! Bobbi greeted us in the kitchen the next morning with fresh juice, coffee, teas, a fresh fruit bowl, a variety of homemade breads, biscuits and muffins, and incredibly good scones. Cream cheese stuffed french toast with sausages rounded out the meal. Mmmm. Now, Cheney House might not be as plush or opulent as some B and B's up in mountain country, but it's not as expensive and doesn't demand 2 or 3 night stays, either. Ashland is very close to Squam Lake (of "On Golden Pond" fame) and the entire surrounding area is beautiful to explore in October. It's also just minutes off 93, and about 1/2 an hour from the Waterville Valley area. Anthony's suggestions on routes to follow were very helpful. So, 5 stars may be generous if I were to base my review on the physical accommodation alone. There's no roaring fireplace, and the room - at least ours - was small-ish. But that's not the whole of how you rate a B and B. We were welcome, happy, comfortable, well-fed, and well-entertained. From before we got out of the car, until after we had already said our goodbyes and drove off waving, this was an A-1 experience. (If you have allergies, be aware that there are a couple of cats, and one very adorable dog on premises.)

We booked two nights for my birthday and it was so lovely to visit and see all the agricultural projects. Location was also really nice and walkable to downtown as well as a short drive to other towns and sites in the lakes region of New Hampshire.

There was a BAT flying around in our room at 3 am, to which the Inn told us to "deal with it" since…read moreno employee would be on site until 7:30 am. We immediately vacated the premises out of concern for our safety. The Inn not only refused to refund us but also showed zero sympathy. In clear defiance of public health guidelines, the owner told us we should have stayed in the room and should not have left. The owner said that I needed to "act like an adult," called me "an entitled little horror," and screamed, "This is New Hampshire and not a war zone in Ukraine!" She blamed me for waking them up at 3 am and even accused me of bringing the bat into the room. She was inconsistent, at times saying there was no bat and at other times saying it was just a fruit bat. Bat exposure aside, their costumer service is the opposite of hospitable, with zero regard for our health and safety. Also the room was dirty, with dust balls and no hand soap.
