Just to clarify, there are no bodily burials here, strictly cremated ones (you can even add your cremated pet). The memorial gardens are beautifully sculpted into the sloping hillside and includes a gravely trail behind it that runs by a creek. I noticed that along the creek trail there appeared to be additional interments along the path. This short path eventually dead ends into a hillside where you have to turn around and go back. Most people opt for the white limestone marker, but you can also get granite as well. One thing that became apparent is that there does not seem to be many open spaces left (the good news is that they are adding more). You'll find an above ground mausoleum on site as well. There is an office at the main entrance for more detailed information, but it's best to make an appointment since it is not always manned, especially during the lunch hour. This small cemetery with almost 200 headstones resides in the quiet countryside, surrounded on all…read moresides by rural farmland. The location is so remote that it does not even show up on Google maps (until now hopefully). There is a gate 100 yards in front of the cemetery with a Texas historical sign which adds to the story. Most of the names on the headstones are of German origin, and some of the older markers are inscribed in the German language. What's unusual about this cemetery compared to most in the area is the fact that there are no borders denoting family plots. Nonetheless, many of the names are grouped together. It is still an active cemetery with one very recent interment. If you want to make this your future forever home in the peaceful countryside, you may have to contact the church of the same name in the town of Thorndale on Highway 79. 10 photos included.

I stopped by the Texas State Cemetery on a Thursday afternoon in mid May. The weather was just…read morestarting to warm up, but hadn't quite crossed into "Texas hot" yet. Fred greeted me at the gate along with another staff member and immediately made me feel welcome. He asked if I was meeting anyone, looking for someone specific, or if there was anything in particular I wanted to see. What followed was one of the most unexpectedly meaningful experiences I've had in Austin. Calling what Fred did a "tour" honestly feels too shallow. He walked me through the grounds like a historian and storyteller preserving something important. He shared stories about the people buried there, explained the architecture and monuments, and had an unbelievable depth of knowledge about Texas history. But more than that, he knew how to read the moment. He knew when to pause and let you take it all in. He knew when to speak, when to move on, and somehow seemed to anticipate my questions before I even asked them. Fred was not only incredibly knowledgeable, but genuinely funny, engaging, and an amazing ambassador for the cemetery and for Texas history itself. You could tell he truly cared about preserving the stories behind the names. A cemetery may seem like an unusual destination to some people, but I see it as a place of remembrance, sacrifice, service, and history. Visiting here, especially after also seeing the Alamo, helps you understand the absolute, unmistakable pride Texans have in their state. There's just no question about it. One detail I especially appreciated was learning that the visitor center was intentionally designed to resemble the Long Barracks at the Alamo. It was a subtle but powerful connection between two places dedicated to preserving Texas history and identity. If you appreciate history, storytelling, or quiet places that make you reflect a little deeper, this is absolutely worth visiting.

TLDR: A pleasant cemetery that caters to all faiths and offers green burials. Grounds have some…read morelovely sculptures but the best part is the beautiful prayer garden. I think I want to be buried here. A lovely and serene place. A variety of sculptures are placed throughout the grounds. On one side, there is a green, lush pasture with grazing cows. On another side, the most beautiful aspect of this cemetery -- the prayer garden. It was larger and more pleasant than I expected. There is a lovely little pond and a trail that passes multiple family plots. It has that magical hidden-from-the-world feeling. I neglected to take photos since I wanted to avoid photographing any gravestones. Why doesn't every cemetery have a prayer garden!? This cemetery serves all faiths. Oh and they offer GREEN BURIALS (sign me up). There's no official parking lot -- you just find areas to pull over. There is a slightly larger area to pull over by the portable toilets (by prayer garden entrance). Cemetery hours are dawn to dusk, daily. The official hours listed here are for the office, which has limited hours and is closed on weekends. Office staff is very friendly (I called to confirm hours).

3.5 This is a very…read morenicely maintained cemetery. Several of the graves were covered in rose bushes and floral arrangements that you may not see in other places. There were some gravel pathways and and some statuary that were very pretty. Behind the graves there was a prayer walk way with headstones, chimes and figures dedicated to St. Francis of Asisi. There is no real parking lot to speak of but you can park on the gravel near the opening of cemetery. Also, there are no real bathrooms here. There is a port o potty but it's super gross so be aware to take care of that somewhere else.

The older section of Oakwood cemetery is just as painted by literature and movies - crumbled down gravestones, crawling vines, unnamed dead, multiple generations of families buried together, and wrought iron fencing. Go find the graves of John Henry Faulk, Andrew Jackson Hamilton, and Ima Hogg! I hope I have not disturbed any of the dead during my visits there or my Yelp review. I simply like to stroll through Oakwood and take in the haunted beauty. Just thought I'd share one of my favorite, lesser known spots.

Bio: Susanna Dickinson was the wife of Captain Almaron Dickinson and was the sole adult Anglo survivor that witnessed the massacre at the Battle of the Alamo. On the morning of March 6, 1836, as the troops of General Antonio López de Santa Anna stormed the mission, Captain Dickinson ran to his wife, reported that all was lost, and expressed hope that she could save herself and their child. Although he died at the Alamo, his wife and child Angelina survived. Following the fall of the Alamo, Susanna was escorted from the Alamo mission, interviewed by Santa Anna himself and sent by him with a message to Sam Houston. You will find a Texas historical sign denoting one particular individual buried here. There are many older headstones here along with some recent ones, making this an active graveyard. In keeping with many older cemeteries like this, you'll find lots of headstones belonging to children and young adults. The 2 to 3 acre property is ringed with a fence and is at this time receiving some new construction to enhance the property. The property is very well cared for with virtually no toppled headstones, however, I could not find a listing of who is buried where, nor any information regarding burial information. Though it is next to the road it still sits on private property. If you try to go past the gate on the property you will set off an alarm. There does not appear to be any new graves nor a lot of room for new residents either.

Sandwiched between Round Rock and Georgetown in the countryside along County Road 110, you'll find…read morethis cemetery. It sits on about 3 acres and is oddly divided between the older headstones on the south side and the newer ones on the north side with an expanse of land in the middle. Right next-door is a camper and boat storage facility. The property is relatively well cared for, although many of the older headstones really could use a good cleaning. There is a Texas historical sign on site which speaks of the Swedish settlers in the area. This makes sense since many of the headstones reflect the language. One thing that I found odd was there were our family plots covered in pea gravel laid out, but they are unclaimed. For that matter, virtually the entire cemetery is laid out in square family plots in an orderly manner. One name that stood out here, was the name Bergstrom, which reminds me of Austin's airport namesake. The newest internment that I could find was from 2025 and there is plenty of space still available. One thing that was conspicuously missing from the newer markers were small oval porcelain photographs of the deceased cemented to the headstones.
