He called me and assured me that he would file the return the next day. I followed up 10 days later and nothing, again I tried calling, emails and even reached out to his associate and once again no response. I checked today and my 2025 returns haven't been filed. At this point I will no longer try to contact him and will proceed will filing a formal complaint with the District Attorney as well as with the Better Business Bureau. Abu, if you read this, I tried my best not to go this route and I let you know, I feel betrayed and unfortunately you gave me no choice.

Let me detail my experience below: December 16, 2019: Send an inquiry through their website asking about availability for new clients. Receive a response from Steven that they're currently evaluating their capacity and will get back to me in a week. I respond immediately asking if I should follow up in a week or if they'll let me know? *CRICKETS* December 26, 2019: Ask for an update. Hear nothing, follow up with an inquiry through their website December 31, 2019: Receive a response from Steven apologizing for letting this slip through the cracks. They have room for new clients and ask for information. I respond an hour later with the information. *CRICKETS* January 19, 2019: Another follow up. Ask for an update. *CRICKETS* January 31, 2019: I give up. He once picked up the phone and then pretended to be someone else when he realized I was calling for an update on my taxes. He lied to us about filing for an extension and took forms from my mother that he never returned. Ultimately he stopped replying entirely and we had to look for a new accountant, several months after the filing deadline. I just got a notice that I owe several thousand dollars in late filing fees because it turns out he also lied about getting an extension. For some complex issues, they tried to get solid and verified sources to answer my questions. I really appreciate this point. 4. They tried to be flexible to meet your requirements. If your tax situation is simple, then I think software is a good choice and will save you money. But if the situation is complex, to find a CPA help you will be better.

But the whole experience was unprofessional and ultimately unhelpful when it came to doing our actual taxes. First, I didn't hear anything from them for a couple of weeks after our initial meeting. It required me following up to get an update. And then I had specifically asked for a heads up on whether we were likely to owe any taxes, since we were self-employed the past year and unclear whether we were paying sufficient estimated taxes. In the end, I got a response a couple of days before taxes were due to be filed with a report that we $12K in taxes. There was a potential to open an IRA to lowering our tax liability but with no guidance on how to do that and only 2 days to spare we just paid the bill. I would not recommend working with these folks. They seem like nice enough people but were either overwhelmed this tax season or understaffed. Either way, that exactly what you count on a tax account to be prepared for and they clearly failed.

Steve indicated that he had a problem with his software provider and didn't submit a complete tax return. Steve indicated that I should ignore the letter and the balance would go away. In September, I was contacted again by the VA Dept of Taxation indicating that I still owed money, and VA was pursuing collections and/or garnishing my wages. It was a small amount, so I just paid it. I told Steve I was upset by several errors in my state taxes (hasn't happened to me in 18 years of self-filing). Steve said he didn't understand why I was upset. He did offer to pay the small amount of overdue taxes. For me, I have 2 expectations for tax prep: file on time and accurately. Steve was 0 for 2.
