I hired Steve to do my 2021 Federal and State taxes. In July the VA Dept of Taxation contacted me…read moreto indicated that I owed unpaid/overdue taxes. I contacted Steve. Steve indicated that he had a problem with his software provider and didn't submit a complete tax return. Steve indicated that I should ignore the letter and the balance would go away. In September, I was contacted again by the VA Dept of Taxation indicating that I still owed money, and VA was pursuing collections and/or garnishing my wages. It was a small amount, so I just paid it. I told Steve I was upset by several errors in my state taxes (hasn't happened to me in 18 years of self-filing). Steve said he didn't understand why I was upset. He did offer to pay the small amount of overdue taxes. For me, I have 2 expectations for tax prep: file on time and accurately. Steve was 0 for 2.

First, they charged me $250 for a basic filing service that most other professionals offer for around $100. Unfortunately, the inflated price did not come with better service -- quite the opposite. The office itself is filthy and poorly maintained, which should have been a red flag. The accountant simply gave me advice to handle my case with the Tax dept. that created serious issues for me and then completely disappeared. I tried to contact him more than 10 times over the course of 17 days with no response. My emails and messages were ignored until the deadline to submit my documents had already passed. Only after the deadline did the secretary message me saying I should solve my problems on my own -- because the accountant is on vacation. When I voiced my frustration about the lack of response, the secretary actually hung up on me. They were okay only until I made the payment -- after that, they acted like I no longer mattered. "the photo attached explains a lot." The accountant also carries himself with an arrogant, dismissive attitude -- as if he's doing clients a favor just by responding.
