Steve indicated that he had a problem with his software provider and didn't submit a complete tax return. Steve indicated that I should ignore the letter and the balance would go away. In September, I was contacted again by the VA Dept of Taxation indicating that I still owed money, and VA was pursuing collections and/or garnishing my wages. It was a small amount, so I just paid it. I told Steve I was upset by several errors in my state taxes (hasn't happened to me in 18 years of self-filing). Steve said he didn't understand why I was upset. He did offer to pay the small amount of overdue taxes. For me, I have 2 expectations for tax prep: file on time and accurately. Steve was 0 for 2.

This firm is so incompetent it is borderline criminal. We fired them from bookkeeping, but kept…read morethem for tax prep. Here is how that went: In January, we had a tax planning meeting (seems a little late, but whatever). Their estimate of the income we would report for 2023 was off by 300%. That's 300% off what the same firm calculated two months later when they actually did the taxes. No new numbers came in, everything was available in mid January when they came up with the estimate. When they filed tax returns in April for our firm, they overstated our income on our state returns, apportioning 100% to each state we do business in, instead of proportional amounts. We overpaid our taxes by $100k, and only caught the mistake because *we* found it and pointed it out to them. It took MM over 48 hours to confirm the mistake that we pointed out to them. They then filed amended returns. We will eventually get that money back, but only because of our own diligence. Also...never so much as an apology or taking accountability for the massive mistake. I have another firm redoing our tax filings, to make sure no other mistakes were made. Expensive lesson.
