Nestled in Castellammare del Golfo between the pedestrian zone of Corso Giuseppe Garbaldi and the marina, down some enchanted rustic marble steps, sits a unique gem. My first experience was like this... My GF and I, were sat around the time of sunset, gazing upon a gorgeous view of the mountains and the vast Tyrrhenian Sea. The table was situated on the serpentine steps that cascade through a tiny corridor down to the fishing port below. Music, people, and the sounds of the ocean filled the streets as we dined. Our first dish was a fantastic mix of Sicilian favorites: fresh fish, fruit, and vegetables; new combinations of these typical foods join with different Mediterranean flavors. Across the board the selection was superb. For our prima plate we shared two pasta dishes that turned out to be a complete dream. Our server recommended a dish I've never had before. It was a busiate pasta blended with light tomato and oil based and topped with prawns and fish eggs. My eyes lit up with delight as I embraced the saw the meal and embrace the smell. It was outstanding. My Gf had the squid dyed linguine with delicious prawns and sea urchins. She couldn't believe how much her dish took her back to her childhood when she would collect sea urchins with her late grandmother. It was really a joy just to see her face as she devour it. For desert we had the semifreddo; a beautiful semi-frozen blend of hot espresso and the coffee gelato, comes together perfectly. Hands down one of the best meals I've had in Italy/ in my life. It was so good that even on our 3 day trip we had to go back a second time. I got the pesto gnocchi that time and after that the perfectly cooked tuna, it was simply delicious. She had the sea urchin pasta again. I cannot wait to go back.

Second, Do Not feel discourage with the appearance of the front side of this place that looks like a deli type since the actual dinning room is at the back with large windows overlook the garden. The two of us were the only customers that Friday evening, we were aware that the people in the area usually eat late and thinking that it will get busy as the time goes by, but nope, just the two of us for the entire night in early February. Anyhow, after 12 days being in Italy (Rome, Florence, Pisa) I would say this place has the best meal I ever experienced right after I got to Sicily. We ordered octopus salad for appetizer, big portion, tender and fresh lemon vinaigrette. Couscous with fillet of fish, which is very typical dish or considered as the specialty of the area came with tomato fish broth to be poured on top, delicious. Some pasta with mushrooms, spinach and roasted nuts also delicious with some nutty flavor and al dente. Swordfish with crust of pistachio cooked in perfection. Green salad and slices of fresh tomatoes, simple but crispy green and sweet tomatoes. Plus a compliment of warm freshly baked bread which was one of the highlights after experiencing the hard and cold bread in Rome, unsalted bread in Florence and a so so bread in Pisa. We both were very satisfied for the quality of the food since they were only open for us, technically, but never cut corners in service and the waitress was very eager to help us in giving suggestions what to order. She always came back to our table to check if everything was alright. Last, we decided to have a cassata which is a popular dessert in the area. It was not too sweet and just right.

Two hours later I was contemplating how long the lovely waiting staff would hang about while I tried to stuff in one more mouthful of the fantastic sarde pasta. Be warned this is a very different restaurant in the evening when there are no reservations, it's packed to the raftters and the punters are knee deep at the door clutching tickets marking out where they are in the queue. However, make friends with the owner and he will point you in the direction of his hotel up the road where you can take an aperitifo and they will phone you when they have a table available!! For my own personal taste this is a lunch time venue and I would recommend skipping breakfast to provide a little room!! I'm sure the meat plates are great but for me in this part of the world it's all about the fish. I've lost track of what B and I ate during the couple of long lunches we managed to squeeze in but I remember a fantastic mussel and clam antipasto and some great smoked tuna. The local busiate pasta is freshly made and just divine with prawns that melt in the mouth or my particular favourite: sardine, raisins, pine nuts and fennel. Try to leave some room for the second plate and again stick with the fish. I'd ask the waiters for their recommendation on what's fresh in and trust their judgement. Every dish I had in this restaurant was a joy to eat - the sent and flavour of Sicily on a plate. Wine list is extensive and well priced. Again if you need a little help the waiters are very clues up and will like your interest and make sure you drink well for your budget. The punters are a mixed bunch of locals, families and touristy couples but there seemed to be a significant proportion of hard core "foodies" when we visited, which can be both a good and a bad thing depending on their temperament!! My favourite place for lunch in San Vito and believe me they had some great competition.
