If you are ever in Palermo, this restaurant is worth the 30 min drive down the coast…read more Ristorante Al Burgo offers unique spin on traditional Sicilian dishes, catering to a worldly palate looking a wonderful experience. Nestled in Castellammare del Golfo between the pedestrian zone of Corso Giuseppe Garbaldi and the marina, down some enchanted rustic marble steps, sits a unique gem. My first experience was like this... My GF and I, were sat around the time of sunset, gazing upon a gorgeous view of the mountains and the vast Tyrrhenian Sea. The table was situated on the serpentine steps that cascade through a tiny corridor down to the fishing port below. Music, people, and the sounds of the ocean filled the streets as we dined. Our first dish was a fantastic mix of Sicilian favorites: fresh fish, fruit, and vegetables; new combinations of these typical foods join with different Mediterranean flavors. Across the board the selection was superb. For our prima plate we shared two pasta dishes that turned out to be a complete dream. Our server recommended a dish I've never had before. It was a busiate pasta blended with light tomato and oil based and topped with prawns and fish eggs. My eyes lit up with delight as I embraced the saw the meal and embrace the smell. It was outstanding. My Gf had the squid dyed linguine with delicious prawns and sea urchins. She couldn't believe how much her dish took her back to her childhood when she would collect sea urchins with her late grandmother. It was really a joy just to see her face as she devour it. For desert we had the semifreddo; a beautiful semi-frozen blend of hot espresso and the coffee gelato, comes together perfectly. Hands down one of the best meals I've had in Italy/ in my life. It was so good that even on our 3 day trip we had to go back a second time. I got the pesto gnocchi that time and after that the perfectly cooked tuna, it was simply delicious. She had the sea urchin pasta again. I cannot wait to go back.

The red wine tasted like a Syrah blend, it was easily the best wine that I had in Palermo. Prices seemed reasonable. I recommend getting a reservation, there was often a long line of people waiting for tables.

Very disappointed! Came here tonight with my husband. We had a lovely starter of fried cheese. My…read morehusband had a nice piece of swordfish with salad, which was nicely done. I had the misfortune of ordering the meatballs, which were cooked with cheese and mash potatoes -- at least according to the menu. They arrived on a skewer, no mashed potatoes, but cut up white potatoes instead. I could barely dislodge them from the skewer they were so incredibly overcooked. The cheese in between was brown and literally rock hard, when I called the waiter over he offered to replace them which I accepted. Almost a half hour later, no communication from the waiter, no new meatballs, no sign or any food, and my husband was now long done eating his dinner. We asked for the check. The owner then yelled at ME for not being patient enough! He said food in Sicily takes time! Really? I waited for the first meal and it was totally inedible, how long exactly am I supposed to wait for you to cook it right the second time? The owners reaction was really over the top, and he should be ashamed. They served me bad, inedible food and then yelled at us for not being patient enough to wait through a second hour for a replacement? Please. You make a poor dish, own it, apologize and make it right. I would happily have waited a reasonable amount of time for that. After one hour and 15 minutes with zero communication, that is not on me,it's on you. Own it! This restaurant is probably still worth a visit as I feel my bad dish was an aberration, but the attitude of ownership was absolutely rubbish, and they should be ashamed.

Second, Do Not feel discourage with the appearance of the front side of this place that looks like a deli type since the actual dinning room is at the back with large windows overlook the garden. The two of us were the only customers that Friday evening, we were aware that the people in the area usually eat late and thinking that it will get busy as the time goes by, but nope, just the two of us for the entire night in early February. Anyhow, after 12 days being in Italy (Rome, Florence, Pisa) I would say this place has the best meal I ever experienced right after I got to Sicily. We ordered octopus salad for appetizer, big portion, tender and fresh lemon vinaigrette. Couscous with fillet of fish, which is very typical dish or considered as the specialty of the area came with tomato fish broth to be poured on top, delicious. Some pasta with mushrooms, spinach and roasted nuts also delicious with some nutty flavor and al dente. Swordfish with crust of pistachio cooked in perfection. Green salad and slices of fresh tomatoes, simple but crispy green and sweet tomatoes. Plus a compliment of warm freshly baked bread which was one of the highlights after experiencing the hard and cold bread in Rome, unsalted bread in Florence and a so so bread in Pisa. We both were very satisfied for the quality of the food since they were only open for us, technically, but never cut corners in service and the waitress was very eager to help us in giving suggestions what to order. She always came back to our table to check if everything was alright. Last, we decided to have a cassata which is a popular dessert in the area. It was not too sweet and just right.
