My husband and I came here a couple of weeks ago and saw Jackie (@tattoojax on Instagram). We had…read moresuch a great experience! Smart Ink is on the second floor of a strip mall, and it could be hard to find if you are not looking for it. It is also a bit confusing since it's on the second floor, but the stairs are connected to the cemented wall underneath the second-floor dentist sign. The first thing I noticed when walking into the tattoo studio was how clean and bright it was. Everything is sanitary, and no matter which tattoo artist you see, everyone is nice and will greet you when they see you. There is also a nice artsy vibe to the studio; the walls are filled with handmade art, and every artist's tattoo area has its own personality and aesthetic shining through. I love that everyone can create their own creative area because it makes the studio feel much more inviting. Sometimes, tattoo studios feel very cookie-cutter and edgy, but this place is different in a good way. My husband and I both got tattoos from Jackie, and she did an amazing job. She met with us on the front couches to make sure her final sketches worked with us. I wanted to change a part of mine, and she made the changes on her iPad in front of me before printing it out. Then, she wanted to make sure the placement and size worked with me before we started. Yes, these are basic tattoo artist jobs, but you'd be surprised how many tattoo artists skip steps. I got my tattoos before my husband did, but she took her time on both of us. She was extremely professional and made the experience enjoyable by being personable and talkative. The tattoos look AMAZING and are exactly what we wanted. We gave her some artistic freedom with colors and/or designs, and she did not make us regret it. We will 100% be back at this tattoo studio, and we will be sticking with Jackie for all of our tattoo needs and wants =)

Do you prefer impatient artists? Do you like having the knowledge that the person who began your…read moretattoo may not finish the piece? Are you looking to have the artist provide no professional insight whatsoever? If so, many tattoo locations in the Chicago area that will provide you with that experience. I encourage you to seek one of them out immediately. Are they gone? Good. Now that the D-Bags have left, I can tell you about Stephen Knight, and Knight Studios looks to serve people who are serious about body art. I do not mean snobs or elitists. I do mean people who fully understand the life-long commitment they make when one decides to get a tattoo. As a result, Stephen and Alex take the proper time, professional approach, and trained input to ensure their clients have the best experience possible. Earlier this year I moved to Washington State. As a result, I waited months until I was in Chicago again to have Stephen tattoo me. To me, it was more important to receive a tattoo by someone whom I trust me than receive the immediate gratification of having the piece completed. I do have a quick example of my experience at Knight Studios. I brought Stephen several ideas I had for tattoos and where I wanted them placed. Stephen took the time to create stencils, discuss the realities of each suggestion, and work with me to find the best possible design, size, and location of each piece. If you want someone a "Yes-Man" who will give you a tattoo you will regret within seconds of completion, go elsewhere. If you are looking for tasteful, skilled, and creative artists, visit Knight Studios.

Preliminary review - I have as yet, not actually had the tattoo done, but I felt that Stephen…read moredeserved a review. I've been to a couple of places with my idea, that has been a pet project/labor of love for almost 10 years, and Stephen was the first to actually see it the way I saw it, and run with it in a way that I really loved. If you're looking for a hipster type tattoo, or looking for some old school flash piece - he could probably do it with this eyes closed (but hipster tat factories are a dime a dozen around Chicago). But if you want art, real fucking art, take it to him. So far he has taken the time to sit with me, go over the artwork, and really understand where I am coming from with it - and it gives me great confidence in his abilities. I will check back in after my first sitting. I just had my second sitting with Stephen on my arm piece and am blown away with how amazing this thing looks already. He took one of my favorite pieces of comic art and added a touch of realism to it and it is amazing. Alex worked on an existing piece for a family member, and made what was essentially a garbage tattoo look like a well crafted complete piece. I can honestly say that you would not be disappointed after coming here. Both of these folks are the real deal!

Before meeting her, I used to be a walk-in at random tattoo studios near me because I used to not care who did my tattoos, but I learned that having a consistent tattoo artist you love and trust definitely makes a whole difference, especially someone as reliable and talented as Jackie. As an artist, Jackie works with you to create the best version of what you are envisioning in your head, and she will make tons of recommendations to make your vision better than you ever could imagine. She is extremely clean and sterile, and she definitely takes her time to make her artwork gorgeous. Her attention to detail is immaculate and I constantly get asked in public who my artist is because they love my work so much. I have genuinely never worked with anyone who cares as much as she does about making the customer happy. I recommend her to anyone and everyone I know, and over the years, I've had so many friends and family love my work by her and now they all go to her, too. I promise you will not be disappointed by reaching out to her! I've gotten many different styles of tattoos by her, too, so she doesn't only do one style, either, and is talented across the board!

I had the pleasure of getting a nice back piece done by artist Suerte. I came in not really knowing what I wanted. I told him I wanted something on my spine and I gave him an idea. With that idea, he created something very beautiful in a short amount of time. The second tattoo I got done here was a thigh piece. This time, I worked with the apprentice, Ceci. Even though she is new to the tattoo game, she has amazing skill and great attention to detail. She was able to create something beautiful with the idea that I gave her.
