I can't say enough about this place. As a fellow business owner, I try to relate to every client that walks in my door. Mike Austin did my work today and Jermey one of the other artists was in waiting for a his client. They both were super friendly and great to talk to! I ended up with 2 today. One, I sent him 7 logos of a golfing Santa that has evolved over the last 50 years of where my grandparents lake house was in Christmas Lake Village, Santa Claus, IN. This place is my happy place and means the world to me. And the other a Unalome with a lotus flower and crescent moon that represents growth, wellness, strength, overcoming hurdles in life and enlightenment. I waited over three weeks to get work done as I parked the car at the business. I got a text saying they had to cancel. Say what? Would've been OK. Had they arranged another artist possibly to do my work and or come back the next day to do my work. Got a response almost 2 weeks later. Nothing about scheduling another appointment. When i walked in the employee was sleeping on the couch and I literally had to wake him up... the other one was smoking outside and when he came in he was a real jerk and was extremely rude. When I asked for script tattoo he said he didnt wanna do any words and to pick a different tattoo.. the man that did my tattoo opened a hopefully new needle but then he put his lighter on the tip on the needle and squirted water on it.. I asked him if it was a new needle cuz that seemed like a weird thing to do and I asked why he just put his lighter on it and he said "it's a trick a lot of artist do when doing a dark colored in tattoo" at the time I had just turned 18 and was just dumb enough to believe that and so I allowed him to continue to tattoo me as I just assumed "ok he knows what he's doing and I'm in a good area no way he'd use a dirty needle or do something that would be harmful to me" he definitely over worked my tattoo and kept going in on it too deep and more excessively than he needed to. Later THAT night my arm started breaking out with acne and bumps, it was radiating heat, it scabbed really bad and the next day it turned into green scabs and healed as a dull scar that i now have to treat every day due to the infection. I do not recommend this place. Just felt all too strange and was a bad experience. I do however take responsibility for allowing him to tattoo me after putting his lighter on the needle I should have known that wasn't okay, that was forsure dumb on my part, but at the end of the day it was still something he did and could do to someone else that maybe isn't paying attention. Don't ever just assume it's a clean and safe environment cuz clearly some people cut corners or don't wanna spend the money for new inventory or whatever the reason he felt he needed to do that. I would however recommend skin of a different color in Aurora, IL. I went there and had them touch up the tattoo after it healed months later, and they did it for me for free which I thought was extremely kind. They use all new stuff and make sure you know its new, and even if you aren't paying attention they will ask for you to watch as they open everything so you know it's brand new and sanitary. They are very clean and kind, have many many years of experience and have very good prices that can work with all budgets. I have since gotten 4 more tattoos from there and they all healed perfectly! To conclude, I did go back to the shop the next day saying it's infected and felt like him putting the lighter to the needles could have been a big factor as to why it became infected, he offered me a free tattoo and I said absolutely not, so he gave me a refund on this tattoo as I'm sure he didn't want to be told on. Although looking back I should have told someone and saved other people from a possible infection, or something worse! read more

Tomato tattoos are Flat in color, nothing pops, bland and nothing stands out like you can touch it. When I went back for a touch up the artist made it so dark it looks like a cover up. Came here in spring to look at some artist books and flash. The flash is good, comprehensive designs to suit all tastes and of all sizes too. The place is neat and clean. Two walls are replete with flash, the two counters up front have artist books. Beyond the counters is the studio where the artists work. A back room has a computer where they look up designs and work on things. They do tattoos and a little bit of piercing. South Park DVDs were playing on the flat screen TV on the afternoon I went, getting everyone to chuckle every once in a while as they waited, worked, or were being worked on. I picked an artist, Lerc, because I liked his work samples book, particularly the color and composition. We began discussing by phone and email, but as schedules got a little too complicated, we didn't get back on track until about 2-3 months later. Glad we did tho, because I finally got an amazing tattoo (my first one). A green vine and an orangey trumpeter flower with white accents on the inside of my left wrist. He's a pro and has excellent tattoo chair side manner, putting me at ease, explaining the entire process before, during, and after. He wants to make sure he gets the design exactly how you like it, providing excellent expert feedback when required. He also wants to make sure the location is exactly where you want it, while providing some advice for where or how it might look better. Before he begins he confirms the design yet again, the location, and the rules/process. Lerc's work made it all worthwhile. I will be back later sometime to work on a possible second tattoo design we already started discussing. Laid back, clean, great work, easy access, and private parking. read more

I had waited until right before my 29th birthday to get my first tattoo. I had always wanted one, but had always thought of a reason not to. Then one day I stopped at Tomato Tattoo on the way home from work, in full business suite. I went in one day an spoke to Mike. Who looked at my simple print outs I wanted to make a tattoo out of. He said that they would work wonderfully and could get me in two days later, which was wonderful. While Mike was tattooing me he told me that tattoos were addicting, Well a few weeks past and I was back to add more tattoos to my back. After a few brain bashing sessions and perfecting the final drawings I ended up covering most of my upper back with tattoos. I love them all. I sat for multiple sessions because I wanted a multidimensional colors over large areas, Also I can only handle sitting still for about 3 to 4 hours at a time. Mike accommodated this very well. Also one time I was there for a longer session we took a dinner break, that was fab! Place is always clean. People are interesting to talk with. This was something always interesting on TV. Turning 50 & decided to finally get my first tattoo! I've thought about it for years, and after searching for just the right artist, I decided on Mike Austin at Tomato Tattoo. Now, he's my first & only, so I can't compare this to any other tattoo experience, but I am VERY happy with my new ink! Mike is an "interesting" guy personality-wise. He definitely is an "artist", not just slap on whatever you want. He takes true pride in his work. Making sure the finished product is tattoo perfection! He did take some "liberties" with the design I wanted - but he was RIGHT, I love the finished product! But, let me say this, Mike's biggest plus was his care during this whole process! Like I said, this was my first tat. I did have a much more experienced friend with me, but Mike was AWESOME. Patient, kind, considerate. This could have been a nightmare. I was nervous, I passed out, I threw up, it was painful - but Mike made it all ok. Stellar! And, after feedback from "tattoo people", Mike did a better job than anyone expected! My design has lots of circles, which apparently, to the inexperienced artist easily become "ovals" (I've attached photos). I'm leaving this review so you know my experience. Insulted my skin (I have stretch marks) and said it was the reason for charging me $130 more than the quote. This was my 29th tattoo and my WORST experience ever. They do not take card payments nor I.D.s. The other artists are not friendly. I am use to places where they are like family and treat their clients as such. Will never recommend. read more

I am absolutely THRILLED with the tattoo I had done by Noodles last Saturday!! After a couple of scheduling snafus and delays (on both our parts), we collectively pulled it together I couldn't be happier with the results.... I had gone in a couple months ago with a friend to lend moral support when she got her first tattoo, and she randomly got Noodles that day, who did a great job on her artwork - so I scheduled to have him create a cover-up, custom piece for me. He quoted me an unbelievable price, he sketched a beautiful peony design, and then really took his time to position the artwork to fit my back. The color and shading work really well with the artwork - he really did an outstanding job! He also took the time to fill in a three year old tattoo I have that the color had faded out of, using his own style and expertise to really spruce it up. Both pieces look fantastic! This is my 6th tattoo overall, my first done by Noodles, and I'll definitely be going back to him for all of my future work. The tiny little (first ever when I was 18 years old) tattoo that he covered is completely gone, and the artistry of the new piece really shines through - it's got an element of traditional Japanese shading to it, the lines are very crisp, the color looks great, and it's barely even healed at this point. I'll be sure to post a photograph of the end results in a few weeks. The sitting was just a shade under three hours, and Noodles kept the conversation enjoyable and hilarious the entire time - this guy is a character with loads of interesting sh*% to say, so if you're looking for an artist who does great work and has a personality, Noodles is your guy. Three hours is a lot of time to sit and talk to a virtual stranger, and he made it easy, even when I was feeling the pain at the end. Overall, my experience at Tomato Tattoo was one of the best I've ever had getting tattooed. I've gotten 2 tattoos here, one by Angela (who now works somewhere else) and one by Mike. I have been extremely satisfied both times, and will continue to recommend this shop to everyone I know. Mike is a fantastic artist and a great fellow to chat with while he's working. I brought in my own design and he made some suggestions to improve it, but kept the original idea of the design. I went to another shop before I stopped in here and was not impressed when they barely looked at the design before giving me a price. Mike took his time and talked to me about the tattoo before he gave me a quote (Extremely reasonable btw), which I really liked. He happened to have a cancellation, so he got me in right away. The shop is clean, everything is sterile, and I felt comfortable with the overall vibe of the place. It is located in a strip mall and the parking lot could use some work, but this does not at all reflect the way the shop is presented and run. Do not pass this place up on outside appearance (and the fact that is a couple doors down from a bar). All in all, I'm a very happy customer and will continue to return to Tomato Tattoo for more work. Don't be a jerk/whiner/entitled a** to the staff and they will treat you very well. Mikey nichol was my tattoo artist and the experience could not have been worse. Not only was he two hours late but he was rude. Did not look at the pictures I sent him ahead of time like he asked and when I resent them he did not look. He didn't listen to what I wanted and got made when he had to make small changes to the stencil. I'm not kidding when I say he started yelling at me in front of everyone. I have several tattoos and have never experienced anything like this. He also charged WAY too much for the size, complexity, lateness, and experience. I highly recommend any other artist there, they seemed so much nicer. Mikey complained about not having many bookings and now I know why. read more

I'm crestfallen to write this review and I really hope it was just an "off" day, but I'm a little miffed about my experiences with Tomato Tattoo this afternoon. Let me preface this to say that I have experience with body piercing and tattoos, much to the revulsion of my mother. She's come around over the years, and when she decided to get her ears pierced again, she came to me with advice on what to do. She decided that for her birthday, we'd get her ears pierced. Enter Tomato Tattoo! I'd chosen the parlor in part because of its sterling reputation (and the reviews of you lovely Yelpers) and in part because of a conversation I'd had with Jason, the piercing guy. He was then and today bright, funny, personable and very talented. Just the guy to put my poor mum at ease, I thought! But when we went in, the gentleman I spoke to (NOT Jason, by the way) was very dismissive and, how to put it politely... spacey. I'd explained what I'd like to do, and he said "Well, to do it here, it'd be very expensive." I said I don't care what the cost, I want my mother in the best hands. He shot me a look and went on to say, "For what you want, I'd tell you to just go to Claire's and have a teenager do it." ... WHAT. You've got to be fucking kidding me. I would rather be gored by an angry bull than let my mother go anywhere near a teenager with a piercing gun. There's a litany of reasons why, but basically the machine is unchanged from what's used to tag the ears of cattle, which is to say it shoots a rod of metal through the ear with an impact similar to blunt force trauma. It leads to possible splintering of the metal and an increased rate of infection. Worst of all, certain parts of the machine cannot properly be sterilized in an autoclave. So no thanks, I'd rather not have my mom get a mini bullet shot through her ears by a teenager with five minutes of orientation. Worst still when I'd asked him when the last spore test was done for the autoclave, he didn't even know what a spore test was. I'm really hoping he was joking and I just didn't get it. Or maybe he was having a rough day. But when I went to another nearby parlor, when I even mentioned this story to the owner, she pulled out a giant binder with records from every spore test they'd ever had, performed each month, before I even asked. Hope this was a one-off, rare experience. But dude... Learn the fucking sterilization process. read more

Got my first ink by Mike. It was a geometric piece of original art that he created for my idea, and to exactly frame a birthmark. He explained each step of the fascinating process and, for me- it was about a 1.5 on a ten point pain scale. Here we are on Day 2 and it looks like I was born with it. A number of friends have had him do their tats, and now my wife is seriously considering it after years of just thinking about it. Well done! read more

I had my last tattoo done at Downers Grove Tattoo - and was kind of looking for a nicer place, so I dropped in to Tomato to see what they were about. I came straight from work so I was wearing business casual clothes - I opened the door, the bell dinged, all three tattoo artists stopped inking and looked up at me - and then immediately began tattooing their clients again without addressing me - totally snubbed. Ok I think - they're busy, don't want to mess up their flow, I'll wait patiently. Two people were waiting in chairs, so after standing around like an idiot for about five minutes looking at the wall - I loudly ask them if they've been helped yet - in the hopes one of the people working there will ask why I came into their shop. The couple say they've been helped and are waiting - so I stand around for another ten minutes, feeling really out of place and uncomfortable because I'm dressed like a tool and everyone's wearing Hot Topic attire - at the end of that 15 minutes, after no employee asked what the hell I wanted - I loudly cursed and left. I'd give Tomato Tattoo no stars if I could. First off, I walk in with my fiancee. No one acknowledges us. Yay. Finally Noodles comes up front to talk to us. I talk to him about touching up an old tattoo and adding some new stuff to it. Now, I don't know if maybe I wasn't cool enough, but Noodles was completely uninterested in what I was saying. My fiancee then tried to bounce some ideas off of him. She got the same treatment. We took his card and left knowing that we wouldn't be coming back. Let me note that neither of us are new to tattoos. We both have several. We had just moved into the area and were looking for a good shop and Tomato seemed like it might be better than other around the area. Wrong. If you want some generic flash tattooed by pretentious art school dropouts, by all means go to Tomato. Please note that there are much better places to get tattoos done in the Chicago area. Places that have real artists who are actually nice! I know it sounds crazy, but being a pretentious jerk doesn't make you a good artist. I recommend Gallery of Ink in Chicago. They're artists first, tattoo artists second. Plus, they're all super friendly and a blast to be around! read more

I've had two tattoos done at Tomato and I have mixed feelings about this place. My first experience wasn't that great. I can't remember the name of the guy who tattooed me, but he was rather unfriendly and I wasn't that pleased with the quality of the tattoo - it faded and needed a touch-up within 4 months. However, I got my second tattoo done a few months later by Angela (who was recommended by a friend) and she is FANTASTIC. She does great work and I couldn't be more pleased with the tattoo. I have to say that, overall, the folks who work there could stand to work on their customer relations skills. Both times that I went in to make my appointment, the guys I spoke to were gruff and indifferent and acted like me bringing my business there was a hassle for them. Kind of a turn-off. On the plus side, the place is VERY clean and they follow strict hygienic standards, and I like that you can come back for a free-touch up if you ever need it. When I went in most of the artists were busy with tattoos except for one man. Even though the doorbell rang when I walked in no one greeted me and they barely acknowledged my presence. But when I got there, I saw the portfolio for Angela and they blew me away. We made an appointment and she showed me her design and I was very pleased. Then on the day of the inking, she showed me a modified version and made some adjustments on the on the spot; and I have to say it was awesome!! She even touched up the old tattoo. Thanks Angela! Guys, don't get discouraged when they tell you there's a 4 week wait. Every one at Tomato has a appointment list that long. But it will be worth the wait because they are all PROFESSIONALS. This is the beauty of Yelp. Thanks to the previous Yelpers for getting me in the door to see Jason for my nose piercing. Tomato Tattoo is a great place. It is very clean, and everyone works together to maintain a low-key, relaxed environment. I am a little apprehensive about pain, but the piercing was quick and sweet, just like ripping off a band-aid. The piercing jewelry is pretty nice looking, so I don't have to worry about wearing dorky jewelry until the piercing is healed. The pricing was pretty competitive ($60), they let me relax afterwards, and I even got some candy in the deal. Everyone was very friendly to me, and made me feel very comfortable and confident in my decision, and I'm very happy with the result! I would definitely recommend Tomato for a clean, reputable piercing shop. By the way, piercings are quick so appointments aren't always needed, but you'll want to call ahead to make sure that Jason is working and in shop that day, and isn't totally slammed with tattoo appointments. read more

I had my nose pierced here. Jason was reassuring, entertaining, and didn't screw it up. The shop was clean and tidy, I was in and out quickly- what more could a girl ask for? When I encountered some minor complications (my own damn fault, not theirs), Noodles was kind enough to take a quick peek and give me suggestions on how to fix it. It looks fantastic now. All in all, service was grand, the end result is lovely, and the shop is the sort of place that makes me want to take up getting tattooed as a hobby so I can hang out there. A little pricey at $60 for the piercing, but I can't really complain as I'm willing to pay more to have my face look decent. read more

Okay, I was a third party person going in with my friend to get a tattoo. Granted we were late due to traffic, we called ahead to let the artist know (whom was unknown to my friend..) and they agreed that was okay. Upon arrival, to a basically vacant shop with one other person getting done (not by the artist she was booked), he was (still don't know his name because he neglected to tell either of us) was very annoyed and aggravated due to our lateness. Which by all means if VERY understandable. None the less, he demeanor was very unpleasant, her show the sketch that was not to her exact standards, she only requested that some lines be more curvy then straight. He began to question how, and she gave examples i.e "sublime sun" with other pics, and he condescendingly responded how he claimed a "Mandala flower is" and how this is why he told her over the phone wasn't ideal for this type of thing, but I do understand why it was so hard to make a couple sketches to show in the first place and not just one, knowing it's not ideal. Again understandable, yet he basically after that was not wanting to do this tattoo because she didn't want this version, didn't even bother to try and bother to sketch another one. He was claiming what she wanted wasn't possible b/c where she wanted it; (Which was on the ball of her shoulder) and it was to small of a space and I offered shrinking it with less details and he exclaimed how it would work and place the paper sketch on her shoulder and proceeded to show us the wrinkles on the paper would be on her skin and how it just wouldn't work. I reply, simply that "that was paper, skins not gonna read the same" and he was done after that. He told us to leave that he was over this, and to go to another shop and that they would tell us the same thing. I have no ill will towards this establishment. But that interaction was very uncalled for, this is you're job and you claimed this was a waste of money for other appointments, yet you would even try to fix the one little thing that was wrong? I came here for my double nipple piercings, meaning that I already had them pierced horizontally and I came here to get them pierced vertically so they'd be like criss cross. Shirley was the perfect piercer! She really knows how to make you comfortable, I just loved her personality. Very fun to talk to and very helpful when it comes to talking about piercing placement. My current nipple piercings were actually not *perfectly* even, so we discussed the best way to pierce them to make them as aesthetically pleasing as possible. The whole piercing process itself was incredibly brief, which I loved. I got my nipples pierced like 5 years ago prior to this, so I totally forgot what the process was like. But this was just like in and out and then boom we're done. I already have plenty of other piercings (23 to be exact, prior to getting these double piercings), so Shirley already knew that she didn't have to give me the whole "how to take care of your piercings" speech. But she did reiterate the main points of cleaning them and whatnot just to make sure i knew what to do. I'm sure that if I was a first-time piercee she'd give me the entire rundown of how to clean and care for your new piercings. So far I've had these piercings for 2 weeks and they've been healing up beautifully. They're not even sore or sensitive anymore, I'm surprised that's happened so quickly. I have a lot of friends who go here. Many go to Angela, some to Noodles, and some to Jason. I personally went to Jason and am very happy with my tattoo. Its a large back piece and was my first. Jason was actually pretty fast considering the size and was entertaining throughout both sessions. Though it was somewhat hard to get ahold of him to set up the second session. I'm very happy with my tattoo (both with the price and work) and will definitely be recommending the Tomato to friends. If you're considering going there I'd research the artists a little and maybe check out their in shop portfolios since I think they have better work showcased there than on their web page. Once you decide on the artist its best to make an appointment because the artists there can get pretty busy making it hard to take customers. read more

Recently had a tattoo done here by Alec who was really great in responding to my desires. I went in knowing that I wanted a nice sized color piece of a gypsy woman and he took the time to draw up an amazing original that I immediately loved. Nothing beats a custom drawing... 3 hours later I was adorned by one of my favorite tattoos I have and couldn't be happier. The price was fair, the people were genuine, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. read more
