Tata Pizzeria Griglieria has a laid-back neighborhood-spot feel, with a simple exterior that blends into Rome's residential streets (we almost missed finding it multiple times, as it's hidden in the side of a museum-like building). Inside, the space is casual, modern, and unfussy, with straightforward seating and a welcoming, family-style atmosphere. The vibe is relaxed and local - we were one of the only tourist groups in the dining room. At around 7pm on a Thursday night, the restaurant was about ¾ full, and our party of five was immediately seated. The menu is extensive, with everything from antipasti to over three different styles of pizza (each with 10+ flavor options) to pasta to full entrees. You may order each pizza as "Napoletano" or "Romano"; the former is softer, chewier, and airier, whereas the latter is thinner and crispier; as we were in Rome, most of us opted for the Romano option, and we appreciated the crunchy texture and slight drizzle of olive oil in the crust. There's plenty of creative topping combinations, with options for everyone. One member of our party ordered their Margherita (€10) with tomato sauce, mozzarella, basil, and a drizzle of olive oil; it was a simple classic done right, and she appreciated the high-quality ingredients. Their Cafona (€13) is a unique white-base pizza with mozzarella, smoked provola cheese, savory sausage, crispy potatoes, and EVOO; something that would be hard to find in the States, but a delectable combination. The La Norma (€13) is a red-base with fried aubergine, salted ricotta, mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, basil, and EVOO; think of it as a margherita pizza's sophisticated cousin. The Tartufata (€13.5) comes with tomato sauce, truffle salsiccia (sausage), cherry tomatoes, basil, EVOO, and an indulgent ball of burrata; my friend highly enjoyed it, though found it a bit unwieldy to eat. Lastly, I opted for their Fru Fru Porchetta (€16) - this was a huge pizza sectioned into three: margherita, mushroom/provolone, and porchetta with potatoes. It was a thicker crust, with a pillowy interior. I loved that I could sample three flavors at a time, though I will say I think my pizza had too much cheese, especially as compared to the other pizzas. It was not easy to find to be honest .... But we didnt seem to have a lot of food choices in the hood. The service was helpful- they. Made an effort to get someone who spoke a little English to answer my brief questions . The pizza was good- not great . Honestly after 3 weeks in Italy snd now writing the review I can't recall much about it other than good so it was not a stand out meal . Eh I would skip this place. I ordered delivery. But the pizza was not thin and crispy like I expected. The crust was thick and soggy/chewy like if you were to warm day old pizza in the microwave. The pizza was cooked with way too much sauce and the cheese was not drained well? That's the only thought I had because it was a soupy mess. The cheese also was not melted well. Overall, nasty work. I wouldn't recommend the Margherita or the Diablo pizza. Salami was too salty. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

This restaurant is a little hard to find, being tucked away on the side of a large building. Made a reservation online, and the only time slot available was 7:30pm. When we arrived, it was completely empty and we only saw two people arrive during our entire meal. Like most of the reviews state, the pizza is soggy. I didn't know my daughter ordered it until it came. The center was watery and definitely needed a fork and knife to eat...kinda gross. The pastas lacked flavor, and the most disappointing part was the Caesar salad. Lettuce was wilted and brown (not even Romaine lettuce), and with the dressing and ingredients in it, it was most definitely not a Caesar. The only good thing we had here was the octopus salad. This place sounded so great, and we went out of our way to get there for an evening dinner. We made a reservation for a large group, and we got there just a couple of minutes late (because of the bus) but there was no one else there yet none the less. At first it seemed like it would be great. The waiter was very friendly and we ordered appetizers, which were all very good. And then it went bad. They began to get busy, and our waiter disappeared. Another person appeared. One of our party's food came after we had all finished eating, even though they kept telling us that it was coming. My students aren't familiar with Roman or Neapolitan food, and did their best to eat what they got. I have lived in Naples and in Rome, and my Spaghetti alle vongole was so salty that it was completely inedible. No one ever came by to check with us, and when the woman who wasn't our waiter picked up the plate she asked whether it was bad. I wouldn't have said anything, but she asked, so I told her that it was very salty. She said, oh, salty? She then picked up the plate of a student who had ordered Carbonara (I tasted it, it was sticky and dry) and said sarcastically, "was this salty too?" and then walked away. She then brought us an astronomical bill for food that was only marginally edible and then disappeared for almost 20 minutes. In the end it was better that we didn't order dessert because I'm sure it would have been astronomical and horrible, but we would have liked a coffee before trekking across Rome to get back to our Apartment at 11 pm. In the end one of my students tracked someone down and signed to them for a check, and we paid and left. We didn't ever see our initial waiter again. I was so sad to have taken my students across town for this dinner, and I was really hungry by the time I got back to the apartment (since I had hardly eaten anything) and dehydrated (salt salt salt) and there was nothing left open in our neighborhood.
