Found a new place to eat. It is in Buttonwillow California and it is called Taste of India. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS!!!!! I WILL GO AGAIN. To start, the service was excellent. Older gentleman and he was great. Very attentive and nice. The decor and atmosphere were authentic Indian and it felt nice being there. Now the food. I had salad, Garlic Naan, Rice and Cheese Masala. The salad, rice and Naan were really good. However, the Cheese Masala was friggin superb. So much flavor packed in that little bowl. Was worth every penny I paid. We stopped here around midday on a Thursday, expecting a quick and enjoyable Indian lunch on our drive to the Bay Area. The parking lot out front was packed, which briefly gave the illusion that this place was popular. Turns out it's just an employee parking lot cleverly disguised as a restaurant. Inside? Completely empty. We were seated and immediately put under pressure by an older gentleman who handed us menus and then stood there staring, apparently afraid we might run off with them. Asking for a few minutes to decide was met with silent judgment and continued hovering. When we ordered, we clearly said we didn't want rice -- which, of course, was added to our order anyway. Apparently "no" is just a suggestion here. For drinks, we asked for tap water and were told there was none, as if plumbing hasn't been invented yet. Bottled water was the only option, which we later learned came with a surprise charge. Transparency is clearly not on the menu. The food was... fine. Not bad, not memorable, and definitely not worth the price. I've had better Indian food at Bay Area buffets where you pay a fraction of the cost and don't get bullied into ordering extras. The real shock came with the bill: nearly $100 for three dishes and water. Yes, water. Between the empty dining room, pushy service, unwanted add-ons, and wildly inflated prices, this place manages to turn a simple lunch stop into an overpriced lesson in disappointment. The staff is very kind and welcoming, which creates a relaxed, friendly atmosphere as soon as you walk in. The wait time was impressively quick, especially considering how busy the area can be. Nice place to stop by on the freeway from LA to Bay Area. Food is super fresh. Has authentic Indian taste from the north. Not too spicy. Has veg options too. This Indian Restaurant, Taste of India at 20687 Tracy Ave, Buttonwillow, CA 93206, has been around for years. I use to stop here and enjoy really great meals here. A little disclaimer-you either like Indian food or you don't. I love this type of good quality, properly prepared food. It's been years, but I decided to enjoy dinner here. The restaurant was recently remolded with wood dividers at the tables (see picture). Everything, including the ceiling, had a fresh coat of paint. Really nice looking! My server, a man of my age with white hair, could not have any nicer. He told me about the history of this place and it was family run. I had the Onion Kulchar (thin and delicious), special rice, and Butter Chicken. Honestly, one of the best meals I've had. The portions were generous and fairly priced. There was also an area that sold various items such as bells, drum, food items, laundry detergent, ice cream to portable stoves. These were items a person traveling may want, or for cultural needs. The butter chicken was highly food colored and extra buttery, but that's typical since you are at a street food style spot. The naan was stretchy and doughy. All this came to be $37 which seems slightly steep for Central Valley but it is what it is. Be prepared to wait a long time for your order to be taken as well as for your food to arrive. I'd come here if you've got some time to spare. I ordered to go and it still took 45 minutes - 1 hour after ordering for the food to be ready. We were also grabbing food for a friend that ordered ahead... That too took the same amount of time and they ordered 30 minutes before us. Granted, it was a Friday night at 9pm on Memorial Day weekend, so I'm not sure how it is on other Friday nights. They take cash or card. We stopped here on the way from Joshua Tree back to the Bay Area. A large building and parking lot beckon you to give it a try. As you enter the serene space, once your eyes adjust to the low lighting, it's surprisingly large and well taken care of inside, with mostly booth tables and an informal service-counter, souvenirs from India, and deli case (with desserts and ice creams) across the dining room from the front door. We had good hearty Indian food served by warm-hearted older gentlemen taking care of us AND our grateful dog, Scooby. He was treated to plain "tiki" cuts of fire-grilled chicken. They said they always reserve a tucked away corner booth for those traveling with dogs to use, because it's simply too hot outside for our furry compan. My husband had Butter Chicken. Garlic Naan was good however Tandoori Roti was very dry. They also have khaats for Punjabi Dhaba style seating. The place is unnecessarily dark, very few lights in the evening. And definitely needs to be cleaned up more. The plates weren't very clean. Ordered a take out today for parathas. This used to be our fav place to stop when on I 5 but now the quality has degraded. The parathas were extremely salty and terrible. Had to trash it. Today it was my second visit to this restaurant. The service was excellent as they were very fast and as I was with my 4 year old they calmly listened to my instructions for my kids food. The ambience was nice and quiet as there were very little crowd, as this restaurant is located on i5 at Buttonwillow, CA. On my first visit my experience on my food was not that excellent as I ordered biryani and they were biy oily and very spicy with tons of spices in it. As me being an Indian can tell this was not actually a biryani. Today I came here again and ordered chicken tikka masala and it was truly delicious. The flavor was mild and really enjoyed and my 4 year old also liked it. Roti with chicken tikka masala goes well with each other and the onion salad was not in the menu we requested to serve us as without onion salad it will look and taste incomplete. The restaurant was very clean even the restroom was nice and clean. They also have a small counter near the billing area where you can find many essential things like a blanket, toothpaste soap some India munchies etc. The restaurant was very spacious from inside more than 60 people can dine together. I was disappointed with our experience here. While the inside has been renovated, there were 1-2 flies that kept coming on our table. Additionally, they seem to a bit understaffed as it took time to place our order and also things were forgotten (booster, extra glass, etc). Additionally, we ordered sweet lassi and were given salty lassi. When that was corrected, the sweet lassi tasted more like sweet milk and less like lassi as it wasn't thick at all. *Hugely Overrated and Incredibly Oily Food* We were so excited to visit this after seeing all the 5-star reviews on Yelp, but we left feeling completely let down. I've never been served Indian food this oily in my life. It felt like every dish was prepared with more oil than actual ingredients. Our Bhindi Masala was a greasy mess; I had to scoop the bhindis out from a layer of oil. The Chicken Kadai was even worse, with a flavor completely dominated by grease instead of spices. To add to the confusion, the yellow dal we ordered was clearly made with red lentils. The taste across the board was just horrible. Aside from the fresh Tava Roti, nothing we ate was enjoyable. Stopped here yesterday on a long trip dropping my sister off to college back to LA and I was looking for somewhere to eat. So happy I stopped by here! The food was fresh and delicious. I got the following butter chicken, Chana masala, vegetable samosa, goat curry, lentil soup, garlic naan and rice + coffee. The lentil soup was very watered down compared to traditional Indian places I've ate at so I would recommend NOT buying this. The Chana masala was also watered down but very tasty. The garbanzos were cooked to perfection and soft on taste. The garlic naan was fresh and very buttery! My father got the goat curry and it was also not as thick of a curry very watery but the flavor profile was there. My father loved his dish. I wanted what the table behind me was eating so I grabbed the butter chicken. It was so good. The sauce was thick and very delicious. The service was provided by an older gentleman who was so sweet and very attentive. The ambiance was casual- lots of Indian people inside the restaurant when we went so having them meant they enjoyed it as well!! Moist, tender flavorful with a good amount of shredded chicken. Chicken Tikka Masala 8/10 - tons of sauce with some reasonably sized chunks of white meat chicken, Great to take home and reheat later as leftovers! Garlic naan 8.5/10 - a bit too burnt on the bottom side, and tender yet thin but thankfully walks the line between tender insides and crunchy outer layer the way all naans should be. Plain naan 9/10 - a little thicker than the garlic naan and less burnt. Veggie Pakora 8.5/10 - big pieces deep fried. on point pretty much.. However, over the years, I've noticed a significant decline in the food quality, the restaurant's conditions, and the overall taste. This time, the level of effort was so low that I felt like I wanted my money back. Indian dhaba style food - had the tandoori chicken was pretty decent and the saag paneer with tandoori roti/tawa roti was very good. Just felt the tandoor whether chicken or roti had some black spots if that can be avoided but otherwise good spot on the I-5 freeway which generally is not the case except drive through joints. Overpriced for the quality of food and service. We were initially given paper plates and plastic spoons and had to ask for proper utensils. After noticing mosquitoes and flies near the sweets section, the paper plates were much better. Service was slow, and the dining area was poorly lit, which only added to concerns about cleanliness. If this is meant to be a family-friendly restaurant, playing vulgar Indian videos on the TV is inappropriate. It would be better to keep the TV off and play music instead. read more
