05/12/2025 AVOID THIS PLACE...For the past 10 years we have visited the island and used this rental place, however after today we are no longer give Target Rent A Car ANY Service. The ZERO (0) star rating is based on the service from the Store Manager located at the Baldorioty San Juan location named Wilfredo Maldonado who was unprofessional, miss informed about the rental policies and I felt discriminated against. After being denied to use my own insurance to rent a car and speaking with a corporate representative, if you plan to use your own insurance coverage to rent a vehicle, your insured vehicle must be 2019 or older. Also, a bank issued debit credit card IS an acceptable form of payment. However, Wilfredo express a bank issued debit card is not protected from fraud and its Not an acceptable form of payment. And, your insured vehicle must be 2014 or older. We decided to no longer give Target Rent A Car business. Good luck!!! read more

My Son's first trip abroad without family, him and his girlfriend. I was worried about reserving him a 4x4 in a foreign country. I know how it is and the vultures come out big time! I'll be 100% honest here. Target made it very easy. They met my son and his GF at the airport with a sign. They charged him exactly what they quoted us in an email. They didn't try to sell him extra coverage. He got a brand new Suzuki Jiminy 4x4 automatic, free second driver, free GPS. $750 for 10 days, $1000 deposit. No hidden fees no bullshit! My son said a 4x4 is mandatory for CR. I emailed/set up everything with Erika (Target Manager Costa Rica) from my office in Minnesota. Erika answered all my stupid Dad questions and let me know she would take care of my son in CR. She did exactly what she said, for the exact price she quoted, no pressure no BS! After researching budget car rental companies online for Puerto Rico, Target seemed to be one of the cheapest. I'm 23, but Target didn't seem to list underage fees or insurance fees online when I made the booking. The day I collected the car, underage fees, insurance fees, all started coming up. And apparently I couldn't use my own insurance back in Georgia. That's almost an additional $100 total for 5 days. On the day of return, we realized someone rear ended our car slightly without our notice and caused a little paint to scrape off and a MINOR damage to one of the rear lights. By MINOR, I mean everything is still intact and there was no dent or anything. And guess what, Target charged us $434 for it. Yes. $434, more than the rental price. For a damage that weren't directly our fault. Any mechanic can fix that damage for under $100 AT MOST. A simple spray paint and a light replacement suffices. This is an example of an exploitation of the term "BUDGET", and I hope this comment gets more thumbs up so other people will not make the same mistakes we did. Do yourselves a favor, spend a few extra dollars on a reliable car rental company like Hertz or Enterprise and avoid going through the bullshit we did. read more

I was very hesitant to rent a car in Puerto Rico. Only because I was not familiar with the different companies. I needed something day of and that was economical (I did not budget for a car rental). The concierge told us to come to Target and their process was actually the fastest and most straight to the point rents process I have ever gone through. The car was clean and practically new. No technical issues may all. Got a a new Elantra for $151 for three days (this included protection). Be prepared for the regular $200 additional hold that all rental car companies do. Also PR has tolls so they hold 49.99 for tolls. If you did not pass through tolls then you will get that back. I got round trip transportation from hotel to get the car and when I dropped it off. I am from San Juan, Puerto Rico currently living in Miami for work, and I recently flew down to PR for a few days. After renting the Target car and purchasing the insurance at a special rate on Priceline's website, the frazzled multi-tasking lady tells me at the counter that I have to buy into their insurance (that was triple the cost) since they wouldn't recognize the other one i had already purchased. They refused to acknowledge that i was already ensured, and so I reluctantly had to buy into their expensive insurance. I later spoke with a Priceline customer service rep on the phone who told me that the Priceline insurance I initially purchased is recognized everywhere and that Target basically up-charged me and fooled me into purchasing their insurance. Their customer service sucked along with their major lack of professionalism, and the lady at the counter seemed to be distracted with her co-workers fooling around and making inside jokes as I patiently waited for the transaction (and their jokes) to be over. Additionally, when i returned the car, and waited for the shuttle to take me back to the airport, the drivers took their sweet time (shift-change i think), leaving my boyfriend and i waiting in their sweltering hot bus with no AC (the driver decided to turn off the bus and leave with the key as we waited), even though we had expressed that we were running a bit late. Definitely avoid this place even though the prices are low, you'll end up paying more later. They inflated the cost of a repair after a rock hit my car and avoided all of my calls until I threatened them with a lawsuit. Their claims person consistently lied to me about the status of the fix and legitimately had trouble keeping up with her own lies. They ended up stealing $1,500. Returned rental vehicle to this location, rental originating from Barceloneta location. I was running behind schedule and I did not have my contract/receipt with me. I was stressed out before arriving at this office, but the young lady behind the counter was able to assist me in a professional, efficient and pleasant manner. I must have lucked out because the shuttle bus hadn't left yet, the courteous driver waited for me and got me to my terminal in a very acceptable time. He also handled our luggage with care. I am very pleased with Targets (car rental) services at this location as well as Barceloneta location. Told us it was going to cost $179. We rent cars all the time. So we know how this works. After waisting half of our day waiting for the car rental place... we're told that it was an additional $30 a day for protection. Plus a $200 security deposit. OR we could go on our own insurance with a $500 security deposit. The whole issue here... is they take advantage of you!! They did NOT tell us this on the phone! We would have made other plans. He stated the agreed price was for 7 day rental not 6 days. I provided the written agreement and he stated I have to speak with the Supervisor. When I returned, the supervisor was not available and Luz stated I should write a letter. The confirmation was for a total of $106.81 with taxes. They charged me $155. Not very impressed with this place. I have never had a problem using my own insurance when renting a car. I too was up charged with their expensive insurance. The lady I spoke with was not friendly or helpful, she was very "matter of fact". You also have to take a 10 minutes shuttle ride to and from the airport, which is annoying and inconvenient. If your coming from the states don't rent your car here. Your way better off paying $5-$10 extra and getting your car from a reliable car rental agency that you can get at the terminal. Then they said we could drop the car off before our flight and when we arrived they were closed and we missed our flight home! Do not rent here. Had to wait 30 minutes for their shuttle to pick me up. WOuld not give my friend a ride on the shuttle because he was not a customer, just I was. To be fare he was on a different flight and arrived 15 minutes behind me. They made me call my insurance and have proof of insurance faxed to their office. The best is that you can only turn in their car during office hours. They open at 7 am so if you have an early flight don't plan on just dropping off your car in the morning. If hadn't called in advance to check I would never have know that our van wouldn't be there. My fiance and I wanted to rent a car to drive to the rainforest. He had a free rental with Hertz, located down the road from our hotel, but our concierge insisted that we use Target Car Rental. He said it was the best and locally owned so we decided to give it a try. Target has a shuttle that picks you up at your hotel and drives you to their location to pick up the car. The shuttle was 1 hour late to pick us up, we called multiple times to figure out why they hadn't arrived yet and were blown off each time with the excuse that they were on their way. When the shuttle finally arrived the driver was not friendly nor did he apologize for his tardiness, and when we arrived at their location there was only one receptionist working. This was during high tourist season and there were three other groups of people also waiting to rent cars. Thus, we waited an additional 20 minutes to sign papers and get the keys. BEWARE-- This company is unreliable and unorganized; they don't seem to care about their costumers at all! Had we known this, we would have gone with Hertz! read more

Made a reservation through Priceline and bought the optional insurance package. The customer service rep refused to honor the insurance and also indicated that my personal automobile insurance - which also covers rentals - would not be sufficient. After providing proof of insurance, she also stated I would have to pay a $2000 dollar security deposit! being in a hurry I paid it and swore I would never use them again. Horrible! Steer clear. (No pun intended) Our hotel concierge arranged for a car the night before a planned outing to the National Park. They agreed to pick me up at 9:00 am and take me back to their office to sign the paperwork and pick up the car. We found this the worst car rental we ever been to. First, our waiting time to get our already booked and paid online car was 90minutes. Then we didnt get a car what we suppose to get. The worst experience with this company was after a month when they started sending us a new charges of $17-$28 that we couldn't even fight against since we are oversea and their customer service over a phone is horrible, its impossible to get somebody who can really help you. Also, their rates are triple of what Enterprise have, but thats our mistake that we didnt make our own research before we went with Target. As a frequent visitor to Puerto Rico, this is the only place I rent from. Yes, their cars are a little more expensive than the larger competition, but you get more. Firstly, the service is incredibly friendly, and the employees are not at all unpleasant on the eyes. Secondly, they don't give you any grief about using your credit card's insurance vs. buying theirs. Other car rentals on this island will waste your precious time having you call you credit card company and fax coverage documents over. Lastly, they offer free pickup from Condado or Old San Juan, as well as to-from the airport, and they do it in a timely fashion. This is going to save you up to $20 each way. The only reason Target Car Rental doesn't get 5 stars is the $4 per day toll pass fee (charged on days you use tolls, + the tolls). While this seems to be standard on the island, and is incredibly convenient, I wish they would let the renter choose to pay cash if they want. read more
