Dr. Starr has been my doctor for over a decade. She has been excellent in my care for treating my glaucoma. Her concern and coordination of referral and follow up care treated my macular hole with success and I will always be so appreciative of how she approached my care so personally. Dr. Starr did both my cataract and lenses surgeries and still after seven years, and reaching 71 years of age, I'm still 20/20! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Starr and will continue to do so. I would like to give the best review possible to dr Tara Starr who just removed cataract in both of my eyes. Besides being extremely skillful she is the warmest doctor I had the pleasure to meet . She is very empathetic and very easy to talk to , I never felt judged for being anxious about my two surgeries . She always took the necessary time to explain the procedures to me in advance and answer all my questions . I was able to totally trust her judgment on the type of lenses I needed and the result four weeks later is simply phenomenal . I am a professional photographer and getting the best possible care and outcome was paramount. I am now not wearing any glasses , not for far away vision , not for reading and not for the middle distance . I just finished reading a book without glasses for the first time in many years ! Dr. Tara Starr has been my specialist for glaucoma for over 15 years. The day I walked into her office, after being referred to her by my optometrist, for having high pressure in both eyes (glaucoma), she spent over three hours (after hours), to get my pressure from 38 in both eyes, to 17 in one eye and 19 in the other. I felt like this was done with EXTREME medical care. She has been my eye specialist since. Her bed side manner is enrapturing She saved my vision...you can go blind when eye pressure reaching 40. She is caring, efficient, professional, and overall communicates on a one on one level. You don't need an interpreter to understand her educated findings, and your layman understanding. I see many professionals for other health conditions. By far she has the best interpersonal skills. My vision is the last thing I want to lose. And she has save me mind and eyes. She is the worst! She inserted a Tear Duct Plug into my eye without my permission nor my knowledge. I had to travel and was in excruciating pain for three weeks. I finally had to pay $200 to see another Ophthalmologist who saw what had been done and removed it. He was also astonished at one of the eye drops she had prescribed and told me to stop taking it immediately! Where did this woman get her degree? On top of that she's rude. read more

The best part about Dr. Starr's office was the treatment they gave me when I passed out. I have a weird time with that part where they numb your eyes and then prod you. Like, look at that sentence. That sounds very scary. But, anyway. I told the woman who was examining me before the doctor came in that I was going to pass out and everyone went into action. It was amazing! I had an ice pack on my head from the very sweet receptionist and water in my hand when I awoke! Wow! As someone who has passed out in several locations, this is the best care I have ever received. The receptionist told me stories while I recovered and everyone gave me lots of water and helped me walk (even though I was all better by the time I was allowed to walk out). They called my boyfriend to pick me up and made sure he came in and got me. The doctor seemed very educated and seemed like she genuinely wanted to help me. Sorry, but the Lafayette office is run like a factory. Nine seats in the small waiting area (all taken) Two other seats in the tiny practice area to be used for test result conferences. A friendly staff of six bumping into each other. Her main assistant is fully incompetent - I told her that the Field Test point was blurry and not centered, she changed the lens, it was still blurry, she quickly started the machine and left the room. Dr. Starr looked at the results and said she couldn't use them, but would reschedule the same test for a follow up visit. Hurriedly, one other test was not mentioned. But she found that one eye had a film that was not removed from a long ago cataract procedure and booked me into a local hospital for a Lazer treatment. Good luck folks. read more

My wife's optometrist suggested Dr. Starr as the best for cataracts, which were a bit more complicated in her case than normal. He was right. Dr. Starr's the best. Here's my wife's story... I had surgery done on each eye at a one month interval. Dr. Starr is a great and skillful doctor and her staff is very nice, too. 20 Stars for Dr Star ******************** for eliminating my bifocal eye glasses altogether and restoring my vision. Dr Starr performed the initial surgery to zap remove my cataracts and insert in a new lenses one week apart. She uses amazing state of the art surgical procedures in which I was awoke the whole time and watching with my other eye. Dr Starr uses only a mild local anesthetic. The first eye surgery takes less than a half hour. Then she puts an eye patch over the operated eye that stays on for that day. The next morning the eye patch is not needed, nor eyeglasses for that eye. I popped out the right lense. A week later she did the same procedure on my left eye, at the hospital and the next day when I took off the left patch I had no use for my bifocal eyeglass any more. Yesss!!! No more eyeglasses!! I had normal eye inflammation for about 3 months after the operations and had to use 3 different eye drops to heal. The whole process has been well worth it! Dr Tara Starr has performed over ten thousand eye surgeries. With her busy schedule she is also very attentive, empathetic and caring along with her exceptional skills as an eye surgeon. read more

Great Doctor and wonderful Staff!!! Five days out of cataract surgery on one eye and to my surprise (and that of Dr Starr's), I am at 20/20!!! I cannot remember the last time I had 20/20 vision. Still experiencing some fogginess in the operated eye but Dr Starr has reassured me that there is nothing physical there and it is my brain adjusting. I also have the headache that goes along with the adjusting brain! She wanted me to get the newer multi-focal IOL. However, I opted not to get this for the number one reason cost (it is $2,000 per eye), second I have a difficult time with my progressive glasses and third I honestly do not mind reading glasses. The IOL the insurance covers works well for me. I am happy with the results of the cataract surgery on one eye and am looking forward to the surgery on the other one. Wait time can extend up to an hour. However, Dr Starr is good and takes time to explain things so it's worth the wait. Her staff is knowledgeable as well as professional. read more

Fantastic Doctor. Best that I have ever seen. Unfortunately I have had many problems with my eyes and none were as bad as my most recent. Dr. Star literally showed up when I was in the emergency room, scared, in great pain and could not see. She immediately took over and explained everything to me. I needed cataract surgery and I did not have anyone who could refer me to an ophthalmologist who took my insurance, so I had to go by the ratings on my insurance website. I lucked out. My eyes were already known to not be in great shape, and it turned out out that there was a previously unknown problem that caused complications during surgery. She handled that and after surgery made an additional suggestion for the second surgery that led to an even better outcome than I had expected. (For those who are about to embark on cataract surgery--one eye is operated on followed by the second eye a short time later.) The one warning I would give is that her practice is very busy so be prepared to wait at your appointments. I don't know if that's because her office was just reopening after the initial COVID shutdown in our county, or if it's always that way--she's very very good and takes Medicare, after all. read more

I was referred to Dr. Starr for cataract surgery by a nurse who works at Alta Bates whom I have known a long time. Dr. Starr kept me informed as to what to expect when I had my cataract removed. The recovery was very quick. After about 48 hours everything was crystal clear, even though I have macular degeneration, but not the bad kind. After one week I was seeing 20/20. I'm afraid that my words won't express how grateful my husband and I are for Dr Starr. My husband is 72 years old, and for the last year and a half he's suffered 24 hours a day with nerve damage from Shingles. And he also developed cataracts in both eyes. His right eye was considered legally blind, and the nerve damage started in that eyebrow and went up that side of his head. Dr Starr and her entire staff made us feel so comfortable, and she was very knowledgable about this type of nerve damage. She spent a lot of time explaining everything about the surgery to us. She made my husband feel safe, and the surgery couldn't have gone any smoother. No pain or discomfort. The morning after surgery, he took off his eye patch, and he just walked around the house smiling. He couldn't believe how beautiful everything was. I hadn't seen him smile in almost 2 years. We went to Dr Starr's office that afternoon, and he couldn't stop thanking her. The 2nd day after surgery, he realized that about 50% of his pain was gone. In fact, 4 days after surgery, he was able to sleep for 6 hours, and wasn't woken up from the pain. Up until then, he hadn't slept more than 2 hours in a year and a half. His vision is almost perfect in that eye now, so he needs to get a new pair of reading glasses. He can't even see out of the ones he has now. She was a godsend for us.
