I love Tara Kitchen! The Troy location is perfectly located and has a very nice interior. The shrimp with prunes, tomato jam and harissa was delicious. The sauce was so flavorful and came with rice and some pita on the side. The only annoying thing was the shrimp tails were left on, which in a sauce requires some patience! We didn't have room for dessert but the options sounded delicious.

I've been wanting to try Tara's for ages and finally got the chance! I went here for dinner on a Sunday and was sat immediately. The waitress brought over complimentary tea, which was delicious. For appetizers, we started with the dip sampler - eggplant, parsley, and olive tapenade - and Moroccan Cigars - Phyllo dough filled with ground lamb. Both were fantastic! The flavors of the dips were great, and the warm Pita bread was so fresh. For entrees, we ordered the Chicken with pomegranate, molasses, olives, almonds, and Harissa, and the Lamb with honey, prunes, apricots, almonds and Harissa. The chicken tasted sweet at first but had a spicy finish. It was a touch too sweet for my taste. The lamb, however, was outstanding. The prunes and apricots were not too sweet, and the dish had excellent flavor. Overall, the service was excellent, as was the Moroccan decor. The menu is extensive, so I'm looking forward to going back to try more things as well as their all you can eat lunch buffet!

I was told to try here but honestly wasn't that impressed. The best dish was the rice - very good! The bowls however weren't my favorite but i'd definitely try a different kind next time. Small building and nice staff.

Chicken tagine with tomato jam, harissa, figs, almonds, perfection

Well, Tara's kinda ruined Moroccan food for me... anywhere other than here and possibly Morocco. The flavors are SO exquisite. So nuanced, so authentic. All of the tagine dishes are to Moroccan standards - all sorts of Mediterranean ingredients, not always what you'd expect to see together as a Western Hemispherean, but that's part of the magic. Anything you order with pita, the pita is magically soft. Even the side of rice has subtle flavors all through the grains, infused in every bite. Truly magic. Into the foods: My friend got the eggplant, roasted garlic & tomato dip. The dish honestly tasted like none of those as much as it tasted like all of those. It all comes together in such a unique way that if you had it blind, you couldn't identify a single ingredient. But it was slightly sweet, smooth, rich, creamy, totally delicious. Magic. I didn't sample his dinner but I got the chicken tagine. After asking between the tomato jam and pomegranate molasses tagines, I went with the tomato since I was told pomegranate comes across a bit sweeter. Man, if that wasn't the perfect move. I have NEVER before had a tomato sauce this amazing that I actually want more tomato sauce. And there was plenty. Plenty of meat, vegetables, fruit (figs!), nuts (almonds!), spice (harissa) - they added extra harissa to give me more heat in my meal! So excellent. So exquisite, seriously. I've never tasted anything like this and it was just the perfect balance of all five senses (yes, umami is in there with so much flavor/spice depth to the sauce). My appetite has decreased, the tagine is deceptively large, and I still would've dived into a second tagine of this dish when all was said and done. I wanted a little bit of dessert, but they admitted the baklava and cheesecake are not homemade. So I asked for the most dessertlike appetizer and received orange salad. The oranges are a flavor offset from the tomatoes and almonds, and then mix in salty olives and, well, this is technically not a dessert so I forgive that. The pomegranate molasses dressing is not thick like molasses but has that sweet touch to it and sweetness depth from the molasses. I will note here that a few orange seeds made it in - clearly a fresh fruit was sliced, but the ONLY caveat of the night was for them to look for seeds when preparing this. This dish was not really my thing. Authentic definitely, but the warm fig salad that I was leaning toward was PROBABLY the right choice in the end. Service: Attentive, friendly, personal. The whole staff will chat - the chef even came over to say hi! Atmosphere: Cozy, a nice place to date or bring the family, anything from casual to formal. Verdict: Tara's Tagine 4 Lyfe.

I'm a huge fan of the original Tara Kitchen in Schenectady. I've been trying to get to the Troy location for quite some time and finally made it last night. The space is larger than the original but still has the open kitchen concept. The four stars is primarily for the food - it's wonderful. Fantastic flavors for every dish. The only issue that we ran into - they don't seem to be ready for busy nights. If they can figure out service issues (there was only one server for the entire place and the table turnover took an extraordinarily long time), I'd give them five stars. They don't take reservations. Next time I hit this location, I'll make sure to: -arrive significantly earlier if I have a show to attend -dine here if I don't have anywhere to go after dinner The food is terrific.

I haven't tried the pizza yet, but since their pide is very good, I imagine the pizza would also be solid. For me though, the real highlight at Alibaba is the mezze. In Turkish cuisine, grilled meats and kebabs are almost always enjoyed with a variety of mezze. They might technically be sides, but they're a big part of the whole experience. These days there are several Turkish kebab places in the area, but none of them offer a wide selection of fresh, house-made mezze like Alibaba does. At many places you're lucky if you find one or two options, often just a basic ezme. At Alibaba you'll find around ten different mezze and each one tastes distinct and freshly made. Every time I tell myself I'll just take a little... and somehow I end up filling a big mezze plate. Honestly, even when we grill at home, our motivation is picking up mezze from Alibaba to go with it. I'm not sure if it gets the credit it deserves, but don't skip the mezze here -- you'd be missing out. In fact, start with the mezze and figure out the rest later :))

It's very approachable Mediterranean food: an overused word but the best way to describe it. Tara uses a lot of spices that will be new to many diners, but the results are well balanced and will not turn off people who are afraid of heat or funky smells. I've dined at this location when it was a sit down restaurant and now it is a "Mediterranean market". You can order a/combination meal with an entree and two sides, to eat in or take out b/a variety of specialty prepared dishes which were designed in collaboration with former New World chef Ric Orlando c/snacks such as dolmas, baclava etc d/jarred spices and sauces, made by Tara (they are great) and others. There's also a nice assortment of dishes, famines and coffee urns for sale. I ordered a chicken and spinach taigine with chickpeas and orange plus seasoned rice for my sides and it was a very good and filling meal with generous portions. Also took home several jarred items and a tub of dolmas (great) and baklava (too dry) at $4.95 each. Not a five star meal because the combo order was not heated thoroughly with some cold sections, and the baklava needed some honey syrup or other moisturizer. But very good food and a great resource if you are in the area.

This was my first time here so I guess we didn't know what to expect as" Upon entering, it is a nice space, smelled great, comfy seating and nice decor. Our service was great and everything came out quick and fresh. We started out with drinks, wine for me and a Moroccan beer for my date. We were also served hot tea, which tasted exactly like sleepy time tea and honestly I felt really tired by the time I left. We wanted to order the cigars, the restaurant was empty and had just opened for dinner about 30 minutes before we arrived. They were sold out ... okay. We decided to order the Casablanca platter of hummus, olives and pickled vegetables. This large serving of hummus came with 4 small triangles of pita. Not even enough to eat half the hummus, and when we asked for more we were charged. The hummus was delicious and fresh, the olives were an excellent pairing with the hummus and the veggies offered a bright bite as well. It was a great balanced plate to share for a starter. We have been trying to eat lighter so we decided to split the Lamb Tangina, this was not ideal. While there was enough for us both to feel satisfied, the portion for $30 left some to be desired. There were about 5 small pieces of lamb, a few potatoes, and the vessel was mostly filled with (delicious) broth. This was also served with less than 1/4 cup of basmati rice, I am not even joking. It was like a 2oz cup of rice for this brothy dish. We thought it was comical. After saying that, it was so freaking delicious. The lamb melted under the weight of your spoon, the broth flavor was deep with complexity from the smen (fermented butter) and preserved lemon. It was kind of like a soup, I was just eating spoon fulls of the broth. I would definitely come back, and at least we know what to expect as far as serving sizes. It's just pricy for what you actually get, but I suppose the flavors were worth it and I'm glad to have experienced it.

It's a really outstanding addition to the area, filling a vacuum let by the exodus from the nearby Galleria 7, incredi.bowl (just going to call it Incredibowl because I don't know whether to pronounce the 'dot' or not) offers a very simple menu of three major warm grain bowls -- Morrocan, Harvest, and Mediterranean - and five salad bowls - Kale, Greek Goddess, Chickpea Avocado, Thai Yum, and Mexicali. Everything ranges between $12 and $17. You can also do a build your own starting at a $10 base, and they have three kinds of proteins available - salmon, tofu, and chicken - which you can substitute freely in any of the salad or grain bowls. We have tried all the warm grain salads during their soft opening and two of the salads, and they've all been really outstanding. Healthful, outstanding preparation, some unique tzatziki, made fresh right in front of you. My main quibbles such as they are: - the servings are enormous (it's a good value, I note, despite being pricey) and the bowls aren't quite big enough to split outright, so it's awkward sizing especially for lunch. I'd suggest they offer a bowl at just over half the size (maybe 5/8ths?) for 2/3 the price for those that don't want to commit. (I will add everything was excellent leftover the next day or two later, so the large size won't go to waste no matter how hungry you are). - they close at the awkward time of 7 PM. Even just extending it to 8 will get more dinner business from us on those "I forgot to plan something for tonight and we need something quick" nights. - just a few hiccups that go along with the break-in period which I trust will get resolved (mostly in order management, and the packaging of the bags needs to be sized to the bowls they're using - getting more than one bowl in a bag is a precarious operation). The inside is identical to when Ayelada (the quite excellent but poorly located frozen yogurt shop) was there - casual industrial vibe with stainless steel tables and a quick-eat layout. There's outside seating as well just to the side, not bad even though your view is a parking lot and Route 7, although it's too cold right now to enjoy.
