Three big corn tortillas filled with seasoned chicken, smothered with freshly made green sauce, and as an extra touch, covered with grilled onion, cilantro and a generous sprinkle of cotija cheese. A tasty plate of fancy enchiladas, not typical of small town OkieMex joints. My Torta was remarkable. I am sticking firm to this assessment...It was the best that I have ever had!! A fresh soft bolillo, mayo, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno, cheese and a little avocado. I got the two meat Torta. Tender flavorful barbacoa and carnitas prepared properly with a nice crispy fried finish. An excellent sandwich. The sandwich was wrapped up tightly in paper, holding the loaded hand meal together until I pealed it back. I devoured the sandwich. Great service, clean comfortable restaurant. Impressive food. Another great option in Tahlequah. Note: try the carnitas here!!!

Jose's is located on the east side of S. Muskogee Ave. on Monroe. The restaurants had been in business for quite a few years. The locals know where it is. Google search pays off for those of us that don't. Jose's menu is small, with all the right stuff. Tacos, Gorditas, Sopes, Burritos, Enchiladas, Tortas and a good selection of meats. All that you need and nothing that you don't for authentic Mexican food. Three sopes for me and my wife got the enchilada plate. We ordered barbacoa for both meals. I added a small queso, salsa and chips. They cost extra. They are worth it. The sopes were excellent, very filling. Two would have been enough. The red sauce on my wife's enchiladas was the real deal traditional red chili sauce. The barbacoa was well seasoned, tender chunks of beef. Salsa wise, the mild was fair, the picante had bite and flavor, the queso excellent and the green was world class delicious. The green salsa was served warm and it was wonderful! Excellent authentic food, served fresh, good service, order at the counter. A clean restaurant with a big dining area. Jose's has some of the best of what I call traditional authentic style Mexican food, that we have had in Oklahoma.

So, it has only been open for approximately four months as of today. It has some very favorable reviews on Google. I agree with the good reviews I have read. I was surprised to see that it had not been set up on Yelp. The building has been attractively remodeled and expanded, since our visit. It needed the improvements. Even with the upgrades, it still shows the telltale characteristics of a typical well worn, small town OkieMex restaurant, operating in a repurposed structure. It is clean and comfortable. Very well staffed with friendly attentive servers. Chips, salsa and drinks were delivered instantaneously, after we found a booth. The fresh hot food followed only minutes after our order was taken. This is full flavor, well-seasoned OkieMex food. Nothing was bland. The mild salsa had good flavor and the salsa picante offered professional grade heat also, with flavor. I didn't have to dump a bowl of salsa on anything to give it seasoning but, the fiery picante was a handy condiment to bring the heat levels up. For us the #18 lunch: beef taco and enchilada with rice and beans and the #24 Burrito Guadalupano with delicious seasoned grilled chicken. The burrito was a meat packed, plate filling monster, half went home in a box. The taco and enchilada were packed with perfectly seasoned beef. Tasty queso on the enchilada and burrito. I was surprised and pleased. Good food, good dining experience!
